Review: Shinnorie GEN™ Label iPod touch 2G case

iPod touch cases are a dime a dozen these days, and it's no wonder; the metal backs of the things scratch more than a DJ in a record factory. Recently I had looked around for a better solution, but didn't want to settle for second best, and had discovered this: Shinnorie's GEN™ Label contoured nylon case. As the title may indicate, this review is for the iPod touch 2G device, but Shinnorie make these cases for the iPhone 3G and iPod Classic, also. The GEN™ Label case series is quite an interesting one. Shinnorie allows you to customize the color and thread of the case, as well as the color of the front panel.

iPhone, iPod Touch Get GPS-like Capability

Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced major software updates for its iPhone and iPod Touch devices. iPhone users now can send SMS messages to multiple people and iPod Touch users get access to several applications that have been available on the iPhone: Mail, maps, stock quotes, notes and weather reports.

Most significantly, however, is the addition of a GPS-like positioning feature: Rather than using a GPS receiver, Apple consulted with Google and Skyhook Wireless to come up with a technology that uses triangular Wi-Fi and cellular beacon layouts to determine the location of a device. iPhone users will be able to take advantage of the new feature through the free iPhone software upgrade 1.1.3, while people who already have purchased an iPod Touch will have to shell out an extra $20 for the upgrade. All new iPod Touch devices will come with the positioning feature without extra cost.

Apple working on large-screen iPod Touch

Apple is expected to release an iPod Touch device with a 7- to 9-inch screen in the fall of 2009, according to a report on TechCrunch that cites three independent sources. One of TechCrunch's sources claims to have actually handled one of the prototypes, and Apple is talking with manufacturers in Asia about mass production of the device, according to the report. Certainly at that size, the device would be more of a tablet than an iPod, and tablet rumors have been floating around Apple for years. There was a fury of speculation in August after a number of Mac sites pointed to a U.S. patent application granted for what would appeared to be the mythical Mac tablet.

iPod Touch with camera, the new landline

Previous rumours regarding a new generation of Nano with inbuilt camera functionality seem to have faded to dust. According to Wired magazine's website, this has paved the way for a fresh bout of rumours, this time regarding the next generation of iPod Touch. Perhaps its a case of Apple finally noticing that they could attract more people to their media player with this simple addition; or simply because it seems to be the next logical step, either way there is now talk of camera functionality on the next generation of the Touch. These are just rumours however, but it doesn't mean we can't get excited about them.
