22.4.2007iPhone 3G unlock shown live to the web
As previously reported on Neowin last week, the iPhone dev-team has announced they've figured out how to unlock the iPhone 3G for use on any GSM
network you have in your country. The patch will be released on New Years Eve and will require an iPhone that is running 2.11.07 baseband or lower and
will have to be jailbroken. For those of you who were wondering how this is done, there was a demonstration of "yellowsn0w" (the codename for the
unlock) shown live to the Internet by a member of the Dev-Team Blog named MuscleNerd. He used Qik on an iPhone 2G which allowed everyone watching to
communicate with him and ask questions along the way.

22.12.2008UltraSn0w unlocks any 3G iPhone
The iPhone Dev Team has released a video demonstrating a new unlocking method for all iPhone 3G's. The new unlock will be able to unlock the 3G
iPhone running 3.0 firmware regardless of baseband or bootloader, where in the past has prevented future unlocking of the iPhone. The new tool,
replacing the previous YellowSn0w, will be called UltraSn0w on Friday, after Apple has released the 3.0 firmware and can make last minute adjustments.
UltraSn0w will both unlock and jailbreak the iPhone. Jailbreaking is what allows the device to run unsigned applications that are not distributed by
Apple. This new method will work on the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G running 3.0.

17.06.2009UK O2 users now able to unlock iPhones
O2 confirmed today that from November 10 all O2 customers in the UK will be able to unlock their iPhone devices for use on other networks. The unlock
will be free for pay monthly customers at any time during their contracts but O2 will charge a one-off £15 fee for Pay & Go unlocking at the end
of 12 months after purchase. O2 customers can complete an unlocking form and O2 will unlock the device within 14 days. O2 were quick to stress that
existing pay monthly customers will need to honour the remainder of their contracts despite the ability to unlock. Unlocking is a process that allows
users to place a non-O2 sim card into the iPhone device.

10.11.2009Free iPhone SIM Unlocking Software Available (iUnlock)
The folks over at iPhone Dev Wiki posted a free SIM unlock tool for the iPhone. Similar to the other solutions, this software-only solution should
allow you to SIM unlock your iPhone, allowing to use any GSM cell phone carrier. In the U.S. this limits your alternative choice to T-Mobile (over
AT&T), but in other countries, GSM carriers are far more common.
The software is being mirrored (
Gizmodo
mirror) by a number of locations along with downloadable source code. Tutorials are still being developed but some early
instructions have become available.

application with the simplicity that you see in other applications from the team like QuickPwn. The update will be released on New Years Eve and will
require a jailbroken iPhone and 2.11.07 baseband or earlier. Jailbreaking is a method of unofficially hacking the device and allowing it to run 3rd
party applications not available on Apple's official AppStore. The latest iPhone 2.2 software updates the baseband beyond 2.11.07 and it is
recommended that if you want a 3G unlock that you do not update to 2.2 using iTunes alone.

16.12.2008No breakthrough in efforts to unlock the iPhone
Hackers are working to unlock
Apple's iPhone, but the job
appears to be more difficult
than initially expected.
Hackers had hoped that
modifying the iPhone's
bootloader -- the program that
runs before the operating
system is loaded -- would
unlock the handset. But that
turned out to be a dead end,
as the bootloader code must be
signed using a 1,024-bit RSA
private key employed by Apple,
according to an update
released last week by hackers
working together on the
#iphone IRC (Internet Relay
Chat) channel.
Now
the hackers on #iphone are
working to create an assembler
utility for the iPhone's
processor. "This is our last
major hurdle to overcome in
order to write programs for
the phone," they said last
week.

16.07.2007On New Years Eve, iPhone 3G Unlock to go public
Yellowsn0w is the codename to the iPhone 3G unlock. Yesterday, the Dev-Team announced that they have officially unlocked the 2.11.07 baseband on the
iPhone 3G. Users of the 2.2 firmware update do not have the 2.11.07, and will not be able to unlock their devices (the Dev-Team has previously told
users not to upgrade if you wanted to get your phone unlocked).
Yellowsn0w (the codename to the unlock software) will be available for
all users in Cydia, so no restore will be necessary. Since it will be installed via Cydia, it does not matter if you have a PC or Mac.
So, from now until the estimated launch date of New Year's Eve, the Dev-Team will put this software under extensive testing and QA. They have said
before that until it is one-hundred percent stable, they will not release it to the general public, because they do not want to harm the device.
Complete instructions for unlocking will be given upon launch of the software. Just do not update past version 2.11.07 of the baseband.

The iPhone is getting a major upgrade in the summer with iPhone firmware 3.0, including a lot of new features, some already offered by extra apps in

Video MMS. Users can send, receive and playback video directly from their iPhone to iPhone, meaning both MMS and recording capabilities will be

04.04.2009Jobs says Apple will fight iPhone unlock hacking
Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs said today that it's his company's job to stymie hackers who try to unlock the iPhone -- the first time the company has
officially said it would fight attempts to use the popular device on unauthorized networks.
At a London Apple retail store where
he announced the iPhone's Nov. 9 U.K. debut, Jobs responded to a question about whether Apple would put a stop to the unlock hacks that have
mushroomed recently. "It's a cat-and-mouse game," said Jobs. "We try to stay ahead. People will try to break in, and it's our job to stop them
breaking in."
Several unlock hacks have been unveiled in the last few weeks that let users swap the iPhone's included SIM card
with one from another cellular service provider so the phone can make calls on that carrier's network. With the iPhone limited to domestic sales
until November, unlocking is the only way consumers living outside the U.S. have been able to use their phones.

17.10.2007Apple iPhone 3G unlocked already
A group from Brazil has managed to unlock Apple's iPhone 3G handset just days after its release. The unlocked iPhone is displayed and demonstrated
in an online video on a Portuguese-language news blog. An unlocked iPhone can be used with any Sim card and service provider.
IPhone user
Bruno MacMasi said in an interview with Gizmodo that the unlocking process involved modifying the Sim hardware so that the International Mobile
Subscriber Identity can be overwritten and removed from the original network. A similar process was used to unlock the original iPhone last year.
Separately, a group of researchers known as the iPhone Devteam has released the first 'jailbreak' software releases for the iPhone 3G and the
iPhone 2.0 software update. The 'jailbreak' term refers to the process of removing the software controls which prohibit users from installing
software outside of the iPhone App Store.

02.04.2009iPhone 3GS gets jailbroken and unlocked
Purplera1n, unrelated to the Dev Team, has come out with a solution to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS for both Windows and Intel Mac computers. The
jailbreak allows users to download Cydia on their iPhone to install unofficial applications on their device. The jailbreaking solution provided by
purplera1n still does not allow Winterboard to be used as of yet. The method installs an application called Freeze onto the device; this installs and
unpacks Cydia. Users who install Cydia onto their device can then proceed to install UltraSn0w which was recently released to unlock the iPhone 3G,
now unlocks the iPhone 3GS.

06.07.2009Apple Issues Warning on iPhone Unlocking (Updated)
Apple has issued a statement today that programs available for
the iPhone to SIM unlock it could cause "irreparable damage" to the device.
Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone
unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone
becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed.
Apple plans to release the next iPhone
software update later this week which will include the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store.
It appears the statement only refers to SIM
Unlocking your iPhone to allow it to use networks outside of AT&T. It would appear that 3rd party hacks (Ringtones, Applications) would not cause the
same problems.
One forum user
indicates it is possible to reverse the SIM Unlock by reflashing the firmware but must be done manually at this time.
Update: A rough
guide to relock your iPhone, ahead of the software update.

25.09.2007Legal Worries Delay iPhone Unlocking Software
Fear of litigation has led to an indefinite delay in the planned Saturday release of software to unlock Apple Inc.'s iPhone.
John McLaughlin, founder of Uniquephones, based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, said Saturday that he received a phone call about 3 a.m. Saturday
local time from a man claiming to be from O'Melveny & Myers LLP, an international law firm, calling on behalf of AT&T. The firm has worked with Apple
in the past.
The man informed McLaughlin that if he posted the unlock code, he could be sued for copyright infringement and for
dissemination of Apple's intellectual property (IP).
McLaughlin was not completely awake when he took the call and did not get
the full name of the person on the other end, he said. The man presented "friendly advice," but because of the timing of the call and the fact that
it came on a personal mobile phone that McLaughlin never uses for business, it felt more threatening than friendly...

26.08.2007T-Mobile will sell unlocked iPhone in Germany
T-Mobile said Wednesday that it will sell the iPhone in Germany without a contract, complying with a court injunction against it. In addition, it will
unlock any phone bought since November 19 -- the date of the ruling -- at no charge, so that the device can be used with other carriers. However, the
company has asked the courts to clarify the injunction so it may change its offer to consumers based upon that.
Consumers will gain the
option to purchase the device without the two year contract for €999, or about $1,478 USD. In all cases, contract or not, T-Mobile will unlock any
iPhone purchased after the ruling. The process is apparently different in Germany than it is here in the US. American consumers may purchase the
iPhone sans contract for a flat price of $399, whereas in Germany, consumers are apparently forced to purchase the contract first and the phone
second.
