Battle of the stats: Blu-ray beats HD DVD

Another month, another consumer electronics show, and once again the backers of the rival HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc formats come to attempt to persuade us their favoured format is winning the war. The IFA show in Berlin last week was no exception - so how is battle faring now?

The BD boys were up first, pointing to their format's lead in US for the 12-month period from 12 August 2006. According to Nielsen VideoScan sales stats, HD DVD outsold BD until around Christmas, but since then BD has been ahead - though it's come very close to falling behind on a couple of occasions.

Over 2m BDs have been sold in the US up to 12 August 2007, 1.71m of them in 2007 alone. Ignoring sales before 1 January 2007, some 66.3 per cent of next-gen discs sales were BDs. That figure rises to 70 per cent in Europe, according to numbers from market watcher GfK, whose stats were used by the Blu-ray camp to claim BD has been outselling HD DVD here by a factor of 3:1 since the PS3 arrived in Europe in March.

Verizon Droid fails to match iPhone sales

With all the hype surrounding Verizon Wireless' Droid smartphone there seems to be one thing that the Droid can't do that Apple's iPhone can and that is move a lot of devices in the course of one weekend. The Droid sold an estimated 100,000 units in the first two days following its Nov. 6 release-a solid start for the much-anticipated phone. But this is nowhere near the 1 million both the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S sold in their opening weekends, according to a post on TheAppleBlog.com.

iPhone puts Apple into the medical sector

Apple have been showing off the new iPhone features as part of the WWDC Apple is running in America. Perhaps one of the most interesting features and pieces of news is how the medical community will use this device to possibly save many lives in the future. Apparently the medical community now 'flocking to the iPhone' Push notifications allow someone's lab to be pushed right to a doctor. The notification links more information on the patient. iPhone is July's biggest-selling smartphone

Apple's iPhone became the biggest selling smart phone in the U.S. in July, according to iSuppli.

The iPhone accounted for 1.8 percent of all mobile handset sales to U.S. consumers that month -- the first full month in which the iPhone was available.

Apple's device outsold the Blackberry series, the entire Palm portfolio, and any individual Motorola, Nokia, Samsung or other smartphone model. The analysts describe a typical demographic for U.S. iPhone users: most purchasers in July were male, 35-years of age or younger and had college degrees.

One quarter of consumers who bought iPhones switched to AT&T. ISuppli predicts 4.5 million iPhone sales this year, climbing to 30 million sales in 2011.

Motorola: Apple will not open the iPhone

The senior director of entertainment products at Motorola questions whether Apple will truly "open up" the iPhone.

"We've yet to see Apple's SDK , and I'm sure there will be some level of control that goes along with it. I guarantee you that you will not see a Napster music service on the iPhone," said David Ulmer, as he and three other wireless industry big-wigs pondered the impact of Apple's latest status symbol at this week's CTIA Wireless I.T. and Entertainment trade show in San Francisco.

"The iPhone may offer some sort of open web. But music sales? Device sales? Accessory sales? Anything you pay is probably going to come from Apple."

FeedBurner premium news feed now free

After being acquired by Google a month ago, RSS provider FeedBurner plans to make its premium news feed management services available to publishers at no extra charge (manual activation will be necessary). FeedBurner's Stats PRO and MyBrand services were previously available for an additional monthly fee of $5. Stats PRO includes tools to allow users to more effectively track stats on feeds, such as ad metrics and a list of sites publishing the feed. MyBrand allows users to attach their own URL to a feed which is being served by FeedBurner. The original charge for the service ranged from $3 to $14, depending on the number of feeds.

Like its parent company, FeedBurner will now rely on ad sales for revenue. Increasing ad sales had been a constant theme for both companies when the acquisition was announced. Susan Wojcicki, vice president of product management at Google, said at the time of the acquisition that the search giant " constantly aims to give AdWords advertisers broader distribution to an even wider audience of users ".
