iPhone firmware hints at major hardware revision

Code discovered by MacRumors in the recently released 2.1.1 iPhone update suggests the release of a new iPhone may be imminent. Although these hidden strings may seem insignificant to the untrained eye, they are used by Apple to differentiate between hardware iterations. The original iPhone, which launched in 2007, is branded "iPhone 1,1" whilst the 3G iPhone is known as "iPhone 1,2". Such a significant rise in the product string number points towards a major product revision. Numerous reports have been circulating in the past few weeks indicating that work is already well under way on the next generation iPhone, which could feature a quad-core processor.

UltraSn0w unlocks any 3G iPhone

The iPhone Dev Team has released a video demonstrating a new unlocking method for all iPhone 3G's. The new unlock will be able to unlock the 3G iPhone running 3.0 firmware regardless of baseband or bootloader, where in the past has prevented future unlocking of the iPhone. The new tool, replacing the previous YellowSn0w, will be called UltraSn0w on Friday, after Apple has released the 3.0 firmware and can make last minute adjustments. UltraSn0w will both unlock and jailbreak the iPhone. Jailbreaking is what allows the device to run unsigned applications that are not distributed by Apple. Apple loses exclusive iPhone deal in France

Apple was forced to end exclusive iPhone contact deals with Orange in France. The immediate effect of the contact, which offers the latest iPhone to all of France via Apple and Telecom SA (Orange) will be cancelled by France's competition authority. This exclusive contact could knock out all rival phones within France, making the iPhone the most popular smartphone in France. Even with O2 selling the iPhone exclusively in the UK, France competition authority had to step in after a complaint was filed in September, from the successful launch of the iPhone and iPhone 3G, by Orange. Apple has appealed the decision with the French competition authority to once again sell the iPhone exclusively through Orange.

First iPhone worm, iRickRoll'd Jailbroken iPhones

Some Jailbroken iPhone users in Australia have been the first to be infected by the very first iPhone worm. The origins of the worm appear to be from Australia, as they're the first to report problems, getting rickrolled, a famous Internet meme, except this changes the wallpaper to Rick Astley. Any Jailbroken iPhone that have not changed their default password from ‘alpine' once installing SSH, are vulnerable to the worm. The worm is so far harmless, but after one user held an iPhone ransom for €5, the possibilities for a full wide spread attack against SSH Jailbroken iPhone's could be at serious risk.
