Changes to TCP/IP in Windows Vista

Unless you've been living under a rock, you no doubt know by now that Microsoft is currently working toward releasing the next version of the Windows operating system, Windows Vista. As you would probably expect, Windows Vista will be loaded with new features. One thing that caught me by surprise though was that Microsoft has made some major changes to the way that TCP/IP is implemented.

Windows Server 2003 SP2 Blocker Tool to be removed from Windows Update and Automatic Update

Ward Ralston: Just a reminder - It has been a little over a year since we released Windows Server 2003 SP2.  When we release a Service Pack at Microsoft, we want to make sure that IT professionals and system administrators have ample time to assess the service pack and choose when to deploy it.

As with other service packs, we offered support for Windows Server 2003 SP2 within the  Windows Service Pack Blocker Toolkit.  This allowed administrators to block the automatic deployment of Windows Server 2003 SP2 for a period of one year.

Now that time has expired, organizations should be aware that over the next month, support for Windows Server 2003 SP2 within the blocker tool will be phased out Windows Server 2003 SP2 will then be automatically offered, downloaded and/or installed (depending on user or administrator settings) through standard mechanisms including Windows Update and Automatic Update.

Expiration dates for Vista SP1 and XP SP3 blocks announced

If you're an IT professional and currently using Microsoft's Service Pack Blocker, the software giant recently announced that the current blocks for Vista SP1 and XP SP3 are going to expire in a few months. The Service Pack Blocker Tool only temporarily prevents Windows from the installation of a Service Pack via Windows Update, and the block is only effective for one year after the Service pack is released to the market via Windows Update. Effective April 28th, 2009, Windows Vista SP1 will no longer be blocked by the tool and will be delivered via Windows Update. The same goes for Windows XP SP3, but the block will be lifted on May 19th, 2009.

EU Official: IP Addresses are Personal Information

IP addresses, string of numbers that identify computers on the Internet, should generally be regarded as personal information, the head of the European Union's group of data privacy regulators said Monday. Germany's data protection commissioner, Peter Scharr, leads the EU group preparing a report on how well the privacy policies of Internet search engines operated by Google Inc., Yahoo Inc., Microsoft Corp. and others comply with EU privacy law. He told a European Parliament hearing on online data protection that when someone is identified by an IP, or Internet protocol, address "then it has to be regarded as personal data." His view differs from that of Google, which insists an IP address merely identifies the location of a computer, not who the individual user is - something strictly true but which does not recognize that many people regularly use the same computer terminal and IP address.

Cisco: Video, P2P use will almost double IP traffic every two years

Video will drive a 21% compound annual growth rate in business IP traffic across WANs from 2006 to 2011, according to a forecast on global IP traffic released this week by Cisco.

That and consumer traffic, which will surpass business IP traffic in 2008, will cause overall IP traffic to almost double every two years through 2011, the Cisco report finds. Total IP traffic will nearly quintuple in the five-year period from 2006 to 2011, driven by high definition video and high speed broadband penetration, the firm says.

Ciscos report is based on its own estimates plus projections from 10 market analysis firms on the number of Internet users, broadband connections, video subscribers, mobile connections, and Internet application adoption.

On the business side, Cisco found that business IP traffic -- all fixed IP WAN or Internet traffic generated by organizations -- will grow fastest in developing markets and Asia-Pacific. North America, Western Europe and Japan will have slower growth rates.

60 FPS, 1080p Decode Coming to Set-top Boxes Near You

Silicon Image has announced that CeRoma, a leading designer and manufacturer of system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions for digital video broadcasting, will integrate Silicon Images Multistandard High-Definition Video Decoder (MSVD-HD) IP core in a chip for set-top boxes and DTVs.

Silicon Image claims that its MSVD-HD is the only IP core currently available on the market that is able to decode a 1080p at 60 frames per second video stream at low clock speeds.

śThe MSVD-HD IP core is capable of decoding two different HD video streams concurrently, so now, only one IP core is required in the set-top-box, video player or digital TV SoC,ť said Ron Richter, director of HDMI IP Products at Silicon Image. śSilicon Image can now provide semiconductor companies with immediate access to the latest video standards using our MSVD-HD IP core technology, enabling quick time-to-market, low-cost and low-power implementations.ť..

China running out of IP addresses

Chinese officials are calling for a mass migration to IPv6 after disclosing that they have only 830 days' worth of IPv4 resources left.

The disclosure was made by Li Kai, director of IP of the China Internet Network Information Center.

Li explained at a conference that, without a rapid changeover to IPv6, internet users in China will start having problems getting online.

"We held seminars almost everywhere to tell operators to apply for the remaining IP addresses as soon as possible, and to prepare the new IP addresses from IPv6 for internet users," he said, according to state media.

Around 80 per cent of China's IPv4 resources have now been taken up. The country's IP allocation recently exceeded Japan's, making it the second largest in the world behind the US.

Wikipedia bans Scientology

Yesterday, in an unprecedented decision, Wikipedia's court-like body ArbCom handed down a project-wide ban of all IP addresses owned by Scientology for disruptive editing and coordinating their edits to maintain their status quo including "persistent point-of-view pushing and extensive feuding over sources on multiple articles" This is the first time that an entire organization's IP address block has been banned from editing Wikipedia, despite individual IPs being blocked in the past from other organizations, such as the US DoJ in 2008. Arbitrators voted 10 to 0 (with one abstention) in favour of the ban, however individual editors may request IP block exemption if they wish to contribute from the blocked IP addresses.
