AMD versus Intel, bye bye Intel

You may recall a few months back when AMD took out full-page newspaper ads to challenge Intel to a dual-core server duel. Intel declined to take up AMD on its offer, but the challenge got us thinking: what would the results of a dual-core desktop CPU fight look like? Many people equate Windows PCs with Intel Pentium processors (and soon will likely be doing the same with Macs), but we've seen dual-core CPU AMD systems power ahead of dual-core Intel-based PCs on more than one occasion.

Demand for Quad-Core Processors Accelerating Intel

After a relatively slow start quad-core processors are beginning to rapidly gain popularity among various customers. Paul Otellini, chief executive of Intel Corp. said during a conference with financial analysts on Tuesday that shipments of chips with four processing engines topped three million units last quarter.

We launched our first quad-core processor in November of last year, and by the second quarter had shipped our first million units. With demand for our quad-core products accelerating, we shipped over 2 million units in the third quarter alone. We now offer over 20 unique quad-core processor designs, said Mr. Otellini during the conference call with financial analysts.

Growing demand towards quad-core microprocessor is a result of relatively moderate pricing on them, which begins at $266 for Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 as well as availability of software that takes advantage of multi-core chips.

AMD Shows Off More Quad-Core Server Processor Benchmark Results

Advanced Micro Devices recently demonstrated more test results of its quad-core code-named Barcelona processors for servers, which once again confirmed the potential of its new chips, but also rose questions whether the current implementation of the product can beat the competing Intel Xeon offerings hands down.

The new quad-core AMD Opteron Barcelona processors at 2.60GHz can deliver 21% performance gain compared to quad-core Intel Xeon 5355 (2.66GHz) in SPECint_rate2006 and 50% speed improvement over Intel Xeon 5355 in SPECfp_rate2006 benchmarks. The integer and floating point benchmarks results of AMDs code-named Barcelona imply that the new product by AMD is considerably faster compared to Intels quad-core chip at the same clock-speed.

Unfortunately, Barcelonas test results are estimated performance of the chip at 2.60GHz based on internal AMD emulations, whereas the first quad-core processors from AMD due to be available in September will only hit frequencies of up to 2.0GHz. Meanwhile, Intel Corp. plans to release its quad-core Intel Xeon X5365 (3.0GHz) chip towards September as well, whereas no quad-core AMD Opteron products with higher than 2.0GHz clock-speeds are projected until Q4 2007...

Intel Expands Quad-Core Lineup

The world’s largest chipmaker Intel Corp. has unveiled several new quad-core microprocessors at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Nevada and now offers nine chips for desktop, server and workstation applications that feature four processing engines. With the latest announcements, Intel now offers nine quad-core microprocessors for various market segments: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 and Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800 for desktops, Intel Xeon X5355, E5345, E5335, E5320 and E5310 microprocessors for dual-socket server and workstation systems as well as Intel Xeon chips X3220 and X3210 for single-processor systems.

Despite of the fact that the newly introduced Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 chip is sold for $851 instead of $531 rumoured previously, Intel considers $851 price-point for a chip normal for “everyone’s PC”, even though several years ago the highest price-point for Intel’s most innovative chips was $637. “Today Intel delivers another breakthrough – quad-core technology for anyone's PC. The performance once requiring a supercomputer is now on the desktop, allowing you to do new and amazing things,” said Intel president and chief executive Paul Otellini.

Intel profit jumps 44 percent despite price war

Intel said its quarterly profit rose 44 percent over last year, reaching $1.3 billion as low selling prices for its microprocessors were offset by higher than expected unit shipments.

The results came despite an ongoing price war as Intel and rival AMD struggle for larger shares of the processor market. Both companies have been cutting prices on their chips as they upgrade their products from standard chips to dual-core and quad-core processors.

Intel is also in the final stages of a corporate reorganization that included the layoffs of thousands of workers in 2006, and at least 1,800 more layoffs planned for August. The company incurred restructuring charges of $82 million during the most recent quarter as it continued to adjust to the changes, Intel said on Tuesday. ..

Quad-Core Xeon System Previewed

Tyan Computer is showing off one of the first hardware systems containing Quad-Core Xeon 5300 processors at the Intel Developer Forum here today.

The device, aimed at small offices or home offices, carries several of the new Intel chips, which contain four microprocessor cores each. Multicore chips allow a computer to split up heavy workloads, and Intel says it has worked hard to make them as power efficient as possible.

The new Tyan computers will contain a total of 40 cores each and perform at 250G floating-point operations per second (flops) or faster, said Symon Chang, Tyan president and CEO.

The computers, which are taller than a large trunk but about the same width, will cost around ษ,000 to ฮ,000 each and will launch on November 14, he added.

Intel has said it will bring its quad-core chips to market in a new line of Hewlett-Packard Co. workstations due to be introduced on November 13.

AMD and Intel Compare Future Processors in SPEC

Performance of current central processing units may impress, but nothing impresses more than the speed of the forthcoming products. Both Advanced Micro Devices and Intel Corp. have released SPECfp_rate2006 and SPECint_rate2006 test results of their unreleased processors recently on their web-sites to impress the public.

If SPEC benchmark results published by AMD and Intel are to be believed, then a system with two Intel Xeon quad-core microprocessors based on the new micro-architecture at 3.20GHz clock-speed will offer much higher floating point performance than currently available dual-processor server machines. While the results of a 2P machine featuring a pair of quad-core AMD Opteron at 2.50GHz reveal potential, its performance is much slower compared to a 2P Intel Xeon 5400-series-based machine (with 3.20GHz CPU clock speed and 1.60GHz processor system bus speed) in the crucial SPECfp_2006, according to Intel (see slide 18 of this presentation).

At present, quad-core AMD Opteron processor does not have any advantage over quad-core Intel Xeon processor when it comes to integer computations at the same clock-speed. Nevertheless, the new micro-architecture of AMDs quad-core chips allows the central processing units (CPUs) to outperform Intel quad-core Xeon central processing units by 26% when it comes to floating point computations. However, performance comparison between the forthcoming chips may become much different.

Intel to Ship One Million of Quad-Core Chips by Mid-2007

Paul Otellini, chief executive of the world's largest x86 microprocessor maker Intel Corp. said that his company was on track to ship one million of central processing units with four cores by mid-2007. The company did not reveal how many of quad-core chips will be shipped throughout the year, but earlier it was estimated that there will be millions supplied. "We continued to advance our technology in Q4 by launching the industry's first quad-core processors for volume servers and PCs. We launched nine different versions, including the first Core 2 Quad processors for mainstream PCs, and we are well on track to deliver 1 million quad-core processors by the middle of 2007," Paul Otellini said during a conference call with financial analysts.

Currently the world's largest maker of chips offers Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 and Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800 for desktops, which are priced at $851 and $999, respectively. In addition, the company ships five dual-core Intel Xeon X5355, E5345, E5335, E5320 and E5310 microprocessors for dual-socket server and workstation systems as well as two Intel Xeon chips X3220 and X3210 for single-processor systems. Earlier it was reported that quad-core microprocessors' share among Intel's desktop shipments will be only 3% in 2007, which is a very significant number, in fact.

Intel roadmap update - prototypes of first quad-core desktop processor built

Chicago (IL) - Intel is pushing ahead its multi-core strategy and currently is working on at least 21 different processors, TG Daily has learned. Virtually all new Intel chips released between 2006 and 2008 will be based on mobile processor technology and will include the already taped out 65 nm quad-core desktop processor "Kentsfield" and the 45 nm eight-core "Yorkfield" chip.

In January, Intel will officially begin the transition from the current 90 nm to the 65 nm processor generation with the desktop dual-core processor Pentium D 900 ("Presler") and the mobile chips Core Solo and Duo ("Yonah"). Intel is busy informing financial analysts and journalists about the success it had with ramping 65 nm production, which, if we believe Intel, already has achieved the yield levels of previous mature process technologies.

In fact, Intel has begun developing the 45 nm process generation in its Oregon campus and already has initiated research on 32 nm, which is expected to be used for volume production in the 2009 time frame. Intel to Launch 45nm Desktop Chips in Q4 Documents

Intel Corp. has decided to bring the launch of its 45nm quad-core chips forward to the fourth quarter of 2007. This will allow the company to be in full position to compete against the new family of products by its main rival Advanced Micro Devices.

According to documents seen by X-bit labs, Intel will release its new Intel Core Extreme processor with four processing engines made using 45nm process technology in Q4 2007. The document states that launch of the Intel Core Extreme processor pulls into Q407, emphasizing that the actual brand-name of the product is not yet determined. What is highly likely is that the top-of-the range extreme processor will be clocked at 3.33GHz, will use 1333MHz processor system bus and will have 12MB of level-two cache in total.

New Stepping G Intel Core 2 chips clocking over 4 GHz

The latest manufacturing revision of 65nm Intel Core 2 Duo chips based on the new G0 Stepping is hitting stable clock speeds in excess of 4 GHz according to Tomshardware . With the help of some extreme motherboards like the Gigabyte P35T-DQ6 which Gigabyte calls Ultra Durable 2 technology and some DDR2-1000 high-performance memory, were seeing dual-core and even quad-core G0 Stepping CPUs reach uncharted waters in Desktop CPU performance.

On the Server side, overclocking is never used but there are significant energy efficiency implications and well basically see all the Intel Clovertown quad core server chips shift a notch down on the TDP scale. This means the Clovertown 3.0 GHz quad core CPU which had a TDP of 150 watts (used in Apples high-end 8-core workstation) will now drop down to 120 watts which means it can be used in conventional servers. The 2.66 and 2.33 GHz Clovertown quad core CPUs will drop down to the 80 watt TDP bracket and the 2.0 GHz Clovertown quad core CPU will drop down in to the low-voltage category of 50 watts TDP.

Stepping G0 is probably the last and most mature version of Intels 65nm manufacturing before Intel switches to their new 45nm High-K dry lithography manufacturing process which will launch towards the end of this year.

AMD Plans to Ship Hundreds of Thousand Quad-Core Chips This Quarter

Advanced Micro Devices was struggling to deliver its quad-core processors onto the market for many months, but when the worlds second largest maker of x86 central processing units (CPUs) finally managed to introduce its quad-core chips, it turned out that demand exceeds AMDs supplies, the chipmaker admitted. Still, AMD hopes to improve its quad-core shipments sometime in November.

While our initial production ramp of quad-core Opterons has been slower than anticipated, we expect quad-core Opteron will be widely available by the middle of this quarter; and, we expect to ship hundreds of thousands of quad-core processors this quarter into the server and desktop segments, said Dirk Meyer, chief operating officer of AMD, during the companys quarterly conference call with financial analysts.

AMD formally unveiled its quad-core server processors on September 10 and since then a number of observers noted that the new chips are not really widely available. In fact, it is not surprising, as the company shipped less than a hundred of thousand quad-core processors for mainstream servers during its third quarter that ends on the first of October, which means that revenue shipments of quad-core chips that started in mid-August were not really significant.

Intel to Launch Core 2 Quad Chip in January

Intel plans to launch the third model of its four-core processor in January, continuing its efforts to stay ahead of Advanced Micro Devices on the next-generation processor family. Intel will launch the Core 2 Quad chip for high-end desktop PCs during the CES trade show in Las Vegas the week of Jan. 8, industry sources said. The new chip follows Intel's launch in November of its quad-core Xeon 5300 for servers and Core 2 Extreme QX6700 for gamers.

Quad-core chips can handle complex tasks faster than single-core chips by using multithreaded software to break each job into smaller pieces, then computing them simultaneously. The chips are most popular with users of servers and workstations running programs like digital media creation and high-end gaming.
