AMD versus Intel, bye bye Intel

You may recall a few months back when AMD took out full-page newspaper ads to challenge Intel to a dual-core server duel. Intel declined to take up AMD on its offer, but the challenge got us thinking: what would the results of a dual-core desktop CPU fight look like? Many people equate Windows PCs with Intel Pentium processors (and soon will likely be doing the same with Macs), but we've seen dual-core CPU AMD systems power ahead of dual-core Intel-based PCs on more than one occasion.

Intel going for a new logo(?)

The new Intel processor, codename 'Yonah', announced for the 3rd of January 2006, will according to X86-secret simply be called 'Core Solo' or 'Core Duo'. Depending on the amount of cores (no way! where did they come up with that). It's more than 10 years ago since Intel created ax X86-architecture CPU that wasn't called 'Pentium'. Machines with Centrino CPU's will also get a new sticker-logo from now on, saying only 'Centrino', without the real CPU name. The amount of cores will still be mentioned on the sticker.

Intel to take 'Averill' to market as Centrino-like platform

Intel will next year launch its third branded PC platform, after Centrino and Viiv, this time pitched at corporate desktops.

As yet there's no word on the platform's go-to-market brandname, but it will almost certainly be based on Intel's 'Averill' platform. Averill was announced at the chip giant's Developer Forum in March this year for availability in 2006.

Averill is based on Intel's upcoming 'Broadwater' chipset, which will ship primarily as the 965 family, but also as the 946 and 963 product lines, it is believed. The platform also takes in Intel's next-generation Gigabit Ethernet controller, 'Nineveh', and its 65nm dual- and single-core Pentium D and Pentium 4 6xx processors.

While incredibly impressive, what was even more interesting was that Intel appeared to be running OS X on a hackintosh computer. AMD lets Puma release date out of the bag

AMD's would-be Centrino-beater, its 'Puma' platform for laptops, will debut in June in notebooks you can actually buy, the chip maker promised this week.

AMD will also insist that Puma laptops come with Wi-Fi, but unlike Intel's approach with Centrino, it's not forcing manufacturers to use and AMD wireless adaptor.

Intel unveils prices for notebook WiMAX/Wi-Fi modules

Intel has unveiled the prices for its upcoming Echo Peak WiMAX/Wi-Fi and Shirley Peak Wi-Fi modules with volume shipments of the wireless modules for Montevina-based notebooks to begin gradually from the second and third quarters of this year, according to Intel data and sources at Taiwan network-equipment makers.

The launch of Echo Peak and Shirley Peak wireless modules is expected to accelerate migration to 802.11n products and to push down the prices for 802.11n devices as well, said market sources in Taiwan. According to Intel data, the Echo Peak wireless module will support both WiMAX and 802.11n technologies and will be available in prices ranging from US$43-54, depending on specifications. Meanwhile, the Shirley Peak module will support only 802.11n technology with prices between US$19-30.

AMD's upcoming CPU/GPU platform to catch up with Intel?

At the moment, AMD GPG (former ATI Technologies) could be considered as the only division in AMD that is firing on all cylinders. The 7-series chipsets, the mobile Puma platform, XGP and the Radeon 4800 series are all fantastic products. The CPU division had less luck with its recent products, especially if you think about the underestimated competitive threat from Intel, the catastrophic Barcelona B2 revision and a 45 nm architecture that is about to miss its initial launch target. But things are changing and the company may be able to compete with Intel sooner than some may think.

AMD lets cat out of bag with Puma launch

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will uncage its Puma laptop chip platform at events in Taipei and Paris on Wednesday. It's the first new laptop platform the microprocessor manufacturer has developed since it acquired graphics chip specialist ATI -- and perhaps the last such platform in which central processor and graphics processor will be separate components. "The next generation is all about graphics and throughput," said Leslie Sobon, AMD's worldwide director of product marketing. "Nobody needs to open Word and Excel documents faster," she said, so instead AMD is focusing on speeding up video and video games performance for home users.

There's no "Puma inside" logo to promote it, though: Customers looking for the latest chips will need to check that they're getting a laptop with an AMD Turion X2 Ultra processor (the "Ultra" is new), the 780 chipset and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3000 Series graphics chip -- or maybe two, if they want to profit from one of the platform's power-saving, performance-enhancing features: hybrid graphics. Some of the graphics chips that work with the Turion X2 Ultra are already on the market, but AMD is adding a discrete graphics chip at the high end of the range, the 3870.

Intel to shrink Penryn for SFF

With the desktop PC market heading toward SFF (small form factor), Intel plans to shrink down its Penryn processors to support smaller designs, according to sources at motherboard makers. Penryn will have two versions for its BGA packaging, LV and ULV, which will see die sizes shrink from the 35mm squared of previous Merom processors to 22mm squared. This will assist SFF products in becoming even smaller, the sources explained. Penryn will launch first as a 35mm square SV version in the second quarter of 2008, the sources added, while the LV and ULV are scheduled for the second half.

Intel will launch its next generation Centrino platform, Montevina, in the second quarter of 2008. The platform will consist of 45nm Penryn processors, Cantiga GM/PM northbridge chipsets, and the ICH9M southbridge. The platform will also support the Wi-Fi/WiMAX wireless module codenamed Echo Peak, and the 802.11n wireless module codenamed Shirley Peak. Chipsets will support DDR2/DDR3 memory and the graphics engine will have built-in DisplayPort and HDMI/HDCP support, added the sources.

AMD Clinches Quad-Core Price/Performance Lead After First SPEC Results

The first official benchmark test results for Intel's Tigerton series and AMD's Barcelona series were released by the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation. From a pure prowess perspective, neither the new quad-core Xeon MPs nor the new quad-core Opterons walk away with an all-around victory, with Intel's X7350 stealing the show in integer throughput, and AMD's 8350 winning the race in floating-point throughput.

Intel tested a Lenovo R630 G7 system with four of each of its new quad-cores dropped in at some point, including its new top-of-the-line 2.93 GHz Xeon MP X7350. Though it has yet to publish results for all Tigertons across the board in the SPECfp_rate 2006 floating-point throughput test, a quartet of X7350s scored about 29% better in base rate and nearly 34% better in peak rate than four of AMD's top-of-the-line Opteron 8350s in the SPECint_rate 2006 integer throughput test.

But in the SPECfp_rate test - for which we only have Intel results from the X7350 - the Opterons performed somewhat better: by about 15% in base rate and 17% in peak performance. AMD built its own system based around a Tyan Thunder n4250QE, a four-way Socket F motherboard that uses nVidia's nForce Professional 2200 chipset.
