AMD versus Intel, bye bye Intel

You may recall a few months back when AMD took out full-page newspaper ads to challenge Intel to a dual-core server duel. Intel declined to take up AMD on its offer, but the challenge got us thinking: what would the results of a dual-core desktop CPU fight look like? Many people equate Windows PCs with Intel Pentium processors (and soon will likely be doing the same with Macs), but we've seen dual-core CPU AMD systems power ahead of dual-core Intel-based PCs on more than one occasion.

Intel going for a new logo(?)

The new Intel processor, codename 'Yonah', announced for the 3rd of January 2006, will according to X86-secret simply be called 'Core Solo' or 'Core Duo'. Depending on the amount of cores (no way! where did they come up with that). It's more than 10 years ago since Intel created ax X86-architecture CPU that wasn't called 'Pentium'. Machines with Centrino CPU's will also get a new sticker-logo from now on, saying only 'Centrino', without the real CPU name. The amount of cores will still be mentioned on the sticker.

Intel to take 'Averill' to market as Centrino-like platform

Intel will next year launch its third branded PC platform, after Centrino and Viiv, this time pitched at corporate desktops.

As yet there's no word on the platform's go-to-market brandname, but it will almost certainly be based on Intel's 'Averill' platform. Averill was announced at the chip giant's Developer Forum in March this year for availability in 2006.

Averill is based on Intel's upcoming 'Broadwater' chipset, which will ship primarily as the 965 family, but also as the 946 and 963 product lines, it is believed. The platform also takes in Intel's next-generation Gigabit Ethernet controller, 'Nineveh', and its 65nm dual- and single-core Pentium D and Pentium 4 6xx processors.

Asustek Declares Support for 1600MHz Processor Bus by Desktop Mainboards

Asustek Computer plans to enable 1600MHz quad pumped processor system bus on its mainboards based on Intel X38 core-logic, whereas earlier it was rumoured that Intel only intends to enable such speed bin for Intel X48 platform. Given that the worlds largest maker of mainboards would hardly compromise stability of its products, it is unclear why Intel preps two platforms with generally similar features.

Asusteks P5E, P5E3 Deluxe and Maximus Formula (Special Edition) motherboards, which are already listed at Asus web-site, will support processors with 1600MHz processor system bus (PSB ) officially, despite of the fact that Intel has not formally introduced or announced desktop central processing units with such PSB speed-bin. According to unofficial information, processors with 1600MHz bus will be supported by Intels X48 core-logic due out early next year, though, it is uncertain whether enthusiasts bite it, provided that they have the same features on the Intel X38.

Besides officially supporting Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core 2 Quad, Intel Core 2 Extreme and other LG775 processors with up to 1600MHz PSB, Asus P5E and Asus P5E3 Deluxe/WiFi-AP@n will also dual-channel feature DDR2 or DDR3 along with Asusteks proprietary technologies that boost functionality and performance of motherboards.

Intel beefs up 955X chipset with dual-graphics capability

Chicago (IL) - A cross-licensing agreement with Nvidia is beginning to kick in for Intel. The company plans to introduce a new high-end version of the 955X chipset which will enable users to run two Nvidia or ATI graphics cards in tandem.

Ne ws has reached us that Intel is getting more serious about the gaming crowd. While Nvidia's nForce SLI chipset has been the only technology for Intel users to integrate two Nvidia graphic cards in their system until now, there will be another option early next year.

According to sources, Intel will then release the 975X chipset, essentially a 955X version with dual x8 capability and supports for two GeForce 6600 or higher cards. In terms of performance and price, the chipset will be positioned clearly above the 955X, but keep some distance to Nvidia's recently launched nForce SLI x16 chipset. ..

Intel to unveil new brand to employees today

Intel is scheduled to reveal the details of its massive rebranding campaign today. But for now, only Intel employees will be informed about the ideas and reasons why the old and familiar Intel logo just was not up to the task anymore.

D ropping the dropped 'e' takes the center stage of the rebranding and will be the most visible sign for people outside Intel that the company wants to acquire a new image. The Intel brand, currently valued at about $35 billion, is evolving, Intel told employees that the new brand "will tell the world in a new way what Intel is all about, and what the company does."

Originally, the name Intel was derived from the firm's original name "Integrated Electronics". Later on, the two words were combined and the "e" was dropped to highlight the separation of the two words. At the time, the name "Intel" was held by a hotel company and was purchased by Intel for $15,000...

Intel Reportedly to Simplify Brand-Names

In the recent years the product portfolio of Intel Corp. extended tremendously as a result of platformization as well as transition to multi-core technologies, making it uneasy for customers to determine the product they need. But that is going to change, once the company performs global platform simplification process in the beginning of 2008.

It was already reported that the world's largest chipmaker will get rid of Intel Viiv and Intel vPro brand-names going forward, but apparently the changes will be much more substantial, according to reports from Japanese and Taiwanese web-sites. For instance, Intel Core 2 processors will lose their "Solo", "Duo" or "Quad" differentiators, but will be marketed under Intel Core 2 brand-names. Intel Pentium D and Intel Pentium Dual-Core chips, despite of the fact that they are based on different micro-architectures, will be sold under Intel Pentium label. Nevertheless, Intel Celeron, Intel Core Extreme and Intel Xeon trademarks will be retained.

Accessibility in Windows 7

Steven Sinofsky: This post is from Michael Bernstein, a development lead on the User Interface Platform team where he focuses on accessibility. Accessibility is the term we apply to the APIs and features that enable Windows to be used, to be accessible, by as many people as possible so that, regardless of physical or cognitive abilities, everyone has the ability to access the functions of Windows. To enable this, Windows includes both built-in accessibility utilities as well as APIs used by third party assistive technology aids and by application developers to make sure their software is also accessible. This is a topic that is extremely important to Microsoft and one that is a key tenet in the engineering of Windows 7. Microsoft also has a corporate-wide group dedicated to making sure that PCs are easier to see, hear, and use. You can read more about Microsofts accessibility initiatives on http://www.microsoft.com/enable/.
