Could a three-core CPU be coming your way?
Tom's Hardware Guide ran one of the most unusual benchmarks I've ever seen, having taken a dual-CPU system and put two different CPUs in it. Now, anyone who knows anything about dual-CPU systems knows this is a no-no. Most motherboard makers don't even recommend mismatching steppings, let alone anything else. And sure enough, Tom's Hardware Guide had its fair share of trouble getting the system to work in such an odd configuration, but it got the system to work.

AMD versus Intel, bye bye Intel
You may recall a few months back when AMD took out full-page newspaper ads to challenge Intel to a dual-core server duel. Intel declined to take up AMD on its offer, but the challenge got us thinking: what would the results of a dual-core desktop CPU fight look like? Many people equate Windows PCs with Intel Pentium processors (and soon will likely be doing the same with Macs), but we've seen dual-core CPU AMD systems power ahead of dual-core Intel-based PCs on more than one occasion.

Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Review
A Little History
Virtualization software is nothing new, and dates back quite some time. One of the most popular examples for the end user was Connectix Virtual PC for the Mac. Since there are a pretty huge number of programs that are only available on Windows, this created a strong market niche to let Mac users run Windows programs, even if at reduced speed.
Virtual PC for the Mac, rather than emulating Windows, emulated the x86 architecture and the requisite peripheral devices, such as a video and sound card. This meant that emulation could work quite flawlessly, but also that any user would need to purchase a copy of Windows as well and then install it onto the Virtual PC. Virtual PC was a success and Connectix later created a Windows version which let you run most x86 OSes ? something quite useful for developers, enthusiasts, and IT professionals.

8.9.2006Intel E8500 Core2 Duo CPU Review
The E8500 is the fastest Core 2 Duo solution on the market with the clock speed set at 3.16GHz, fully 266MHz higher than the next fastest E series
CPU. For a MSRP on the Intel CPU price list of $266 this makes an affordable solution for those not wanting to spend $999 on an Intel CPU like
the QX9770 that’s upcoming. Dual Core CPUs like the E8500 are excellent choices for the everyday user.
The E8500 also overclocks
like a beast reaching 4.389 GHz, a nearly 40% overclock on normal air-cooling. Other people have reached over 4.5GHz on theirs. Dual Core processors
still have a market as only the Q6600 Core 2 Quad CPU reaches this level of price but performance on the E8500 beats that CPU in many cases.

22.08.2007Intel Atom 230 ultra low-power desktop CPU Review
We recently reviewed Asus' Eee PC 901, which uses the new 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor. Atom uses the same 45nm technology that you’ll
find in the latest 'Penryn' Core 2 CPUs and it packs in some nifty power-saving features that result in a TDP of a mere 2.5W which makes it a
natural choice for Small, Cheap Computers.
But there’s another side to Atom, as Intel also sells it in desktop form, the 230, which
is likewise clocked at 1.6GHz. Atom processors are genreally soldered onto the motherboard so your choice of Atoms is limited to a single model. Buy
an Intel D945GCLF motherboard - it was codenamed 'Little Falls' - and you get a 230 as part of the package.

19.03.2009DDR3 vs. DDR2 - The Intel P35 Test
About three years ago
DDR2 memory first appeared on
the desktop PC scene. It would
be impossible to say it burst
on the scene since it was
introduced with the
unimpressive Intel NetBurst
processors. In that market
DDR2 was more like a trickle
since it was mainly a
curiosity for a processor that
was running a distant second
place to the leading AMD
Athlon chips, which were still
powered by DDR
memory.
DDR2
finally became the universal
standard last May/June when
AMD switched to DDR2 on their
new AM2 platform and Intel
introduced Core 2 Duo, the new
CPU performance leader. Core 2
Duo resided on socket 775,
which also was fed by DDR2.
While it sometimes seems like
centuries ago, it is worth
remembering that Intel Core 2
Duo regained the CPU
performance crown less than a
year ago, and the two years
prior to that all the fastest
systems used AMD Athlon
64/X2/FX processors.
What this review does
address is the performance of
the new DDR3 memory that is
launched with P35. The new
Intel P35 chipset, known as
Bearlake during development,
supports either DDR2 or DDR3
memory. This presented a
perfect opportunity to look at
the performance of both DDR3
and DDR2 on the new P35
chipset. We were also able to
compare performance to a Gold
Editors' Choice Intel P965
motherboard. The results of
these comparisons provided
interesting results about the
capabilities of the new P35
memory controller. It also
answered the question of
whether you should care about
DDR3 in any upcoming system
purchase.

22.02.2007Intel demonstrates 22nm chips scheduled for 2011 release
Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel, stated in a 1965 research paper that the number of transistors on a CPU will double approximately every two years;
this belief became very famous, and is now known as 'Moore's Law'. Intel is still very determined on keeping to that law, as Paul
Otellini, President and CEO of Intel, has just demonstrated the world's first CPU constructed with a 22nm manufacturing process. This means that,
according to Intel's press release, a massive 2.9 billion transistors are squeezed onto a wafer in about the same area as the average fingernail.
Otellini stated, "At Intel, Moore's Law is alive and thriving.

24.11.2008Intel V8 versus AMD 4X4 Platform
In the world of CPU processors, whose is the best is always in question as the balance has swung in both directions in this war of the silicon wafer.
Intel has been the leader many times and on many levels and markets, and although Texas upstarts AMD have given them a fair share of competition,
Intel seems to always come out on top.
AMD's FX series of CPUs propelled them into the limelight in the desktop environment,
but their Opteron CPUs failed to make the impact AMD had hoped in the server domain as did the Turion CPUs in the mobile market. AMD makes a good
product when they are at the top of their game, but Intel still maintains the overall leader position in all these platforms and that equates to
better sales numbers. Only those gamers who just love AMD are really into the whole AM2 platform at the moment, and that is due to the mass popularity
of Intel's Core 2 CPU line which is dominating the desktop environment.
The CPUs and systems in this round of competition were
submitted to me as high-end, desktop systems/ workstation, but the truth is these systems cost so much that there is no way anyone but the rich could
afford these systems as just their gaming machine.

19.09.2007Virtual environments are processor pigs
New research has confirmed what many a hard-core gamer already knows: the more realistic the virtual environment you're playing in, the more your
processor is getting thrashed.
As part of ongoing research into virtual environments and the transition from the current Internet
to more realistic 3D worlds, Intel has benchmarked the server and client utilisation of a range of common Internet environments.
While a conventional Web site only utilises 20 per cent of a local CPU and less than 1 per cent of its graphics processing unit (GPU), those rates
change dramatically as environments became more realistic. Google Earth can consume 60 per cent of the local CPU and up to 15 per cent of the GPU,
while for Second Life those figures rise to 70 per cent for the CPU and as high as 75 per cent for the GPU, Intel found.
"The
growth in computational intensity is actually quadratic in nature," said Intel chief technology officer Justin Rattner, who unveiled the figures
during the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco...

21.09.2007Intels new 3.0 GHz quad 45nm QX9650 uses less than 65 watts
TechReport has an early review on the new Intel QX9650 45nm 3.0 GHz quad-core extreme desktop CPU (due for launch next month) and the
power consumption results are shocking. The new QX9650 quad-core based on
the latest 45nm
HKMG (High K Metal Gate) manufacturing process
consumes less power on average than an Intel E6750 2.66GHz dual-core. At idle the QX9650 system draws 160W versus an E6750 at 175W idle. At peak
consumption the QX9650 draws 215W versus the E6750 at 214W which is nearly identical. Thats shocking when you consider the fact that were comparing
four 3 GHz cores versus two 2.66 GHz cores.
The E6750 is based on stepping G which is already the latest and most mature 65nm
manufacturing process from Intel and it was already an extremely efficient CPU. The idea that one of the first 45nm CPUs on the planet on one of the
earliest production silicon can get these kinds of results is astounding. Whats just as astounding is the fact that Intel calls the QX9650 quad-core
CPU a 130W TDP part when the Intel E6750 is already a very conservative 65W TDP part. It is noteworthy that the server version of the 3 GHz 45nm
quad-core Intel processor is rated at a less conservative 80W TDP which makes perfectly good sense considering its in the same power envelope of a
conservative 65W TDP chip.

30.10.2007Alienware Area-51 m15x gaming notebook review
For years Alienware has been producing machines that cater to gamers and enthusiasts desires, coupling some of the industry's most radical designs
with top of the line PC hardware. So when Alienware introduced the Area-51 m15x we were obviously keen to check it out.
Our review sample
came configured with the new Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000 "Penryn XE" mobile processor and a GeForce 8800M GTX (512MB) graphics card. In short, this
is the combination of the fastest possible mobile CPU and the fastest mobile GPU out there. Of course, this won't come cheap as the retail value
of our review sample was $4770.
The build quality of a laptop is just as important and this is typically an area where we typically
haven't seen Alienware products falling short. Furthermore, there are details on the inner and exterior design that a product in this price range
