Multi-Core Confrontation: Core 2 Quad Q6600 vs. Core 2 Duo E6850

While AMD keeps postponing the launch of their quad-core processors to the end of this year beginning of next, Intel Company is offering very affordable quad-core CPUs from Core 2 Quad family. However, can Core 2 Quad processors be regarded as a worthy alternative to popular dual-core solutions?

The Intel processor price cut that occurred a month ago turned into an important milestone on the multi-core processors way to user computer systems. The price of quad-core processors has finally dropped down to the level of dual-core solutions. To be more exact, the youngest model in the official Core 2 Quad lineup is priced exactly the same as the top Core 2 Duo CPU. This price, by the way, is set at $266, which seems quite sufficient to make processors with four computational cores much more popular than they used to be before.

AMD Shows Off More Quad-Core Server Processor Benchmark Results

Advanced Micro Devices recently demonstrated more test results of its quad-core code-named Barcelona processors for servers, which once again confirmed the potential of its new chips, but also rose questions whether the current implementation of the product can beat the competing Intel Xeon offerings hands down.

The new quad-core AMD Opteron Barcelona processors at 2.60GHz can deliver 21% performance gain compared to quad-core Intel Xeon 5355 (2.66GHz) in SPECint_rate2006 and 50% speed improvement over Intel Xeon 5355 in SPECfp_rate2006 benchmarks. The integer and floating point benchmarks results of AMDs code-named Barcelona imply that the new product by AMD is considerably faster compared to Intels quad-core chip at the same clock-speed.

Unfortunately, Barcelonas test results are estimated performance of the chip at 2.60GHz based on internal AMD emulations, whereas the first quad-core processors from AMD due to be available in September will only hit frequencies of up to 2.0GHz. Meanwhile, Intel Corp. plans to release its quad-core Intel Xeon X5365 (3.0GHz) chip towards September as well, whereas no quad-core AMD Opteron products with higher than 2.0GHz clock-speeds are projected until Q4 2007...

No Cheaper Quad-Core Chips from Intel Shortly Sources

Even though there are not a lot of single-core chips in Intels microprocessor lineup now, quad-core processors are not going to become really affordable soon enough. After Intel introduces its new 45nm central processing units in January, 2008, the company will not cut pricing of its Intel Core 2 Quad below $266.

The new code-named Yorkfield processors, which will be sold under Intel Core 2 Quad trademark with Q9550, Q9450 and Q9300 model numbers, will be priced at $530, $316 and $266 in 1000-unit quantities, respectively. Intel will also not cease to offer its 65nm quad-core microprocessors Q6700 and Q6600 for $530 and $266, respectively. The newer chips are projected to deliver considerably higher performance compared to predecessors thanks to improved micro-architecture, higher-speed processor system busses and cache sizes.

Mainstream Quad-Core CPU Performance Comparison

Looking back, quad-core processors have had quite the run already. Intel's first quad-core CPU, the Core 2 Extreme QX6700 was released almost three years ago, with the much more popular Q6600 following up months later at a rather steep $850. As you may recall it was quite the luxury then to have one of these at your disposal. Today we find ourselves with very different and diversified offerings from both companies, that are not only cheaper but also significantly faster.

Demand for Quad-Core Processors Accelerating Intel

After a relatively slow start quad-core processors are beginning to rapidly gain popularity among various customers. Paul Otellini, chief executive of Intel Corp. said during a conference with financial analysts on Tuesday that shipments of chips with four processing engines topped three million units last quarter.

We launched our first quad-core processor in November of last year, and by the second quarter had shipped our first million units. With demand for our quad-core products accelerating, we shipped over 2 million units in the third quarter alone. We now offer over 20 unique quad-core processor designs, said Mr. Otellini during the conference call with financial analysts.

Growing demand towards quad-core microprocessor is a result of relatively moderate pricing on them, which begins at $266 for Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 as well as availability of software that takes advantage of multi-core chips.

Intel cuts price of quad-core Q6700 by 50%

In move that will likely hit AMD's bottom line, Intel has cut the prices of fourteen processors. The most dramatic cut - the Q6700, the price of which has been slashed by 50%.

Intel cuts price of quad-core Q6700 by 50%The quad-core 2.66GHz Xeon X3230 also has its price slashed by 50% (was $530, now $266).

The 2.66GHz quad-core Q6700 now sells for $266, down from $530. This price point was previously occupied by the entry-level 2.4GHz Q6600. The Q6700 now represents the best bang-for-the-buck quad-core processor available.

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 review: Quad Core is here!

Since the release of Intel's Conroe micro-architecture, the company has been making waves, massive waves. In terms of performance, Intel washed away main competitor AMD, and they have continued to do so during the past three months with the success of their Core 2 Duo and Extreme processor series.

Step aside dual-core, it is now the time of the quad-core and you better believe it. The new quad-core series consists of the Core 2 Quad Q6600 and the Core 2 Extreme QX6700. Both feature a dual 4MB L2 cache, operate on a 1066MHz FSB, and have a thermal output of 130 watts. However, the Core 2 Quad Q6600 is not scheduled for release until early next year, and so today we will be looking at the more powerful Core 2 Extreme QX6700 version, which Intel had promised to make available this month, humming along to the tune of just 2.66GHz using a cool 1.34 volts of power.

The very same technologies that made the Conroe so powerful are all included in the new Kentsfield architecture. In fact, there are no new additions, so it is merely a quad-core version of the Conroe, but of course this is hardly a bad thing. So how does the Quad Core QX6700 performs? Read on and find out.

Intel releases quad-core Tigerton processor

Intel plans to unveil a version of its Xeon processor on Wednesday that's designed for high-end servers with multiple processors -- setting the stage for a showdown with rival Advanced Micro Devices' upcoming quad-core Barcelona chip.

The Xeon 7300 chips, called Tigerton, are the first quad-core processors from Intel designed to be used in servers with four or more processors, a relatively small but lucrative segment of the server market. Previously, the Xeon processor for this segment of the market had two cores, despite the availability of quad-core Xeon chips for single-processor and two-way servers.

The new chips offer significantly better performance compared to their predecessors, Intel's Xeon 5300 chips, said Adesh Gupta, regional platform architecture manager at Intel Asia-Pacific's Server Platforms Group. ..

Intel Prices "Penryn" Xeons

Intels latest roadmap reveals pricing for its upcoming Penryn-based Xeon DP processors. The costs for Penryn-based Xeon DP processors start at $177 and top out at $1,172.

Intel has two Penryn-based quad-core Xeon DP processors under $300. The quad-core Xeon DP E5405 starts out at $209. The $209 price tag yields a quad-core Xeon DP processor clocked in the 2.0 GHz range, but below 2.33 GHz, with 12MB of L2 cache. Putting forth an extra $47 gets you the quad-core Xeon DP E5410 with its 2.33 GHz clock speed.

As the clock speed increases, the price gaps between quad-core Xeon models get larger. Intel prices the 2.50 GHz quad-core Xeon DP E5420 at $316. Stepping up to the next speed-bin comes at a $139 cost, for the 2.66 GHz quad-core Xeon E5430. The quad-core Xeon DP E5440 and its 2.83 GHz clock speed comes in at $690 -- $235 more than the E5430 with a 170 MHz lower clock speed.

Intel discusses quad-core processor server market

With AMD and Intel pushing their quad-core server processors at Computex Taipei 2007, Digitimes got a chance to talk to Boyd Davis, general manager of server platform group marketing of Intel to discuss Intel's plans and thoughts about the new quad-core processors.

Q: What was the main factor that caused Intel to bring its 45nm Harpertown server processor forward to this year?

A: Intel's product launch is directed by the demand of clients, which has nothing to do with the competition in the market. Currently, product development is almost complete therefore it is natural for the company to launch the Harpertown processor ahead of schedule. The company expects to mass produce the processor in the fourth quarter this year...

Review: Intel Core i7 'Nehalem' processor and X58 chipset

In appearance, the new Intel Core i7 - based on the 'Nehalem' microarchitecture - looks like a bigger, chunkier version of the Core 2 Quad but under the heat spreader and casing it has a radical design that breaks new ground.

New ground, that is, for Intel, but Core i7 seems to have rather a lot in common with AMD's Phenom microprocessor. Both CPUs have four cores on a single die, unlike the pair of dual-core CPUs you’ll find inside a Core 2 Quad. Both have the memory controller integrated inside the processor.
intel Core i7 logo intel Core i7 logo

In addition, Core i7 has ditched the frontside bus and moved to the QuickPath Interface (QPI), which bears a strong resemblance to the HyperTransport bus AMD uses. QPI is the new name for Intel's erstwhile HyperTransport rival, Common System Interface (CSI).
