Installing the Windows 7 Beta with Virtual PC 2007 SP1
Yesterday we made the Windows 7 Beta available for public download. Hopefully youre as excited as I am that the beta is here! The Windows 7 Beta is already getting some rave reviews for its new features, performance, and stability. But it is a beta, and with that comes the potential risk that some things may not work as well as they will in the final release.

27.06.2007How to uninstall VS 2008 Beta 2 before installing the final version of VS 2008
Buck Hodges: There have been a few questions about how to correctly uninstall all of VS 2008 Beta 2 in order to install the final version of VS 2008.
Scott Guthrie posted the steps for doing this earlier today. A subset of this list
would apply if you have installed Team Foundation Team Explorer 2008 Beta 2, rather than the full VS 2008 with Team Explorer.
At
the end he recommends rebooting after removing everything and before installing VS 2008. From my experience, that's good advice. The only thing
additionally I've typically done after uninstalling a non-RTM build is to delete the VS 9.0 registry hives (HKLM and HKCU) and the VS 9.0 directory
under "Program Files." Of course, there are no guarantees with this, editing the registry may render your machine nonfunctional, etc., so be
careful and back up your data.

The most common complaint we get from Lifehacker readers in Windows

majority of our tips require installing third-party applicationswhich you can't do if you don't have the right permissions on your PC. If you don't

In response to users, Microsoft has added the ability to publish photos on Flickr from Windows Live Photo Gallery (Publish menu). The feature is only
available with the latest beta version (2.2 refresh) which must be acquired from Microsoft Update after installing the previous Beta version. As well,
amongst the usual bug fixing, the software giant has removed the WDS (Windows Desktop Search) requirement for installing WLPG on Windows XP. The
catch? It still has to be installed, but can be uninstalled afterwards (assuming you have build 1299.1010 and WDS is not being used by any other
programs). Is Microsoft making the right move by working with a competitor?

19.10.2007Windows 7 "Pre-Beta" Build 7004
Doug Holland:
Scott Wylie, Microsoft's New Zealand Director of Development and Platform Strategy,
wrote today on his blog about his experience installing a pre-beta build of
Windows 7 on his home laptop.
It is interesting to note that the pre-beta build of
Windows 7 installed on his home laptop seems to be build 7004,
which if the term "pre-beta" is accurate would indicate that
Windows 7 beta one will be some build number higher than 7004. On the blogosphere the general consensus has been that beta one
would be build 7000.0.081212-1400 which the following screen shot from Scott's laptop could indicate is inaccurate.

03.01.200910,000 Participants Join Home Server Beta
At the beginning of this week,
Joel Sider, Sr. Product
Manager, Windows Server PR,
said that the Windows Home
Server team was sending out
invitations to the limited
beta 2 program by the
truckload. Well, he wasn't
far from the truth.
As of this week, the
number of requests for
participations on the second
beta to the Windows Home
Server has jumped in excess of
25,000. This amount of
response is immense when you
take into consideration the
fact that, at the beginning of
January 2007, this product was
a Microsoft inhouse secret.
?Last Friday, we
invited the first 10,000
people who filled out the
survey to join the Windows
Home Server Beta 2 program.
Here are a few stats: 9,835
people entered a valid e-mail
address, 6,693 have activated
their Connect Invitation ID,
5,686 have acquired a product
key from the Connect site for
installing the software,?
revealed Todd Headrick, the
product planner for the
Microsoft Windows Home Server.
And this is not
enough. The Windows Home
Server team will continue to
welcome participants to the
beta 2 program. At this point
in time, none of the members
of the WHS team has indicated
what the limit will be. ?We
hope to be sending out another
bunch of invitations soon ...
thanks for your patience,?
Headrick added.

25.02.2007Critical Windows patch may
wreak PC havoc
A Microsoft patch
meant to fix critical security
flaws in Windows 2000, Windows
XP and Windows Server 2003 is
causing trouble for some
users, the company said
Friday.
Th
e patch was released Tuesday
to fix four Windows flaws,
including one that experts
predict will be exploited by a
worm in the coming days. The
flaw, tagged "critical" by
Microsoft, lies in a Windows
component for transaction
processing called the
Microsoft Distributed
Transaction Coordinator, or
MSDTC.
Installing
the patch can cause serious
problems, Microsoft said in an
advisory posted to its Web
site Friday. The patch could
lock users out of their PC,
prevent the Windows Firewall
from starting, block certain
applications from running or
installing, and empty the
network connections folder,
among other things, the
software maker said. ..

16.10.2005Installing Windows Server 2003 in a Viridian VM
Mike Kolitz: Earlier this week,
I posted instructions on how to install the "Viridian" CTP on Windows Server 2008 RC0. VMs arent very useful unless you can
install an operating system in them, so I thought that todays post should center on doing just that. As you may have guessed from the title, today
were going to talk about installing Windows Server 2003.
Before we begin, you should make sure that youve created an external
virtual network switch. See
yesterdays post for details on how to do that. You should also have a Windows Server 2003 CD or CD Image (which Ill refer to as
an ISO from now on) handy. Ideally, youll have SP2 integrated into the installation media, but if you dont, well take a trip to
Windows Update later on.
