Windows Vista SP1 Deployment Info

A few quick bits that are noteworthy from the Windows Vista SP1 Whitepaper regarding deployment.

Windows Vista SP1 will support the following delivery methods:As also stated in the Whitepaper, "customers cannot apply SP1 to offline Windows Vista images," meaning that the Vista SP1 update cannot be manually slipstreamed into a Vista RTM ISO. However, a method of repacking an install.wim with Vista SP1 integrated is available using our Vista SP1 Integration Guide which still requires a complete install of Vista RTM in order to reverse integrate it. While this may not be the most ideal method, it is at the moment the only method if one doesn't have access to Microsoft's fully slipped SP1 ISO since availability will be limited.

Microsoft Update Team: Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) is now available on Windows Update (and the Microsoft Download Center)!

If you'd like to install it via WU today, you'll need to visit the Windows Update website. After it downloads, you'll see a series of screens and you'll be asked to make a few clicks before the install will begin.

If you're not in a rush, we recommend you use Automatic Updates to install Windows XP SP3. It provides the best experience because the download will happen in the background. We're planning to begin automatically distributing Windows XP SP3 over AU sometime in the next few months.

Windows Vista SP1 Slipstreaming FAQ

Kevin Remde from Microsoft has posted a very useful FAQ regarding why SP1 cannot be directly slipstreamed into a Vista RTM image. As he points out:

A solution to this problem might be to first integrate the new servicing components and then integrate the other SP1 bits however Microsoft apparently disabled that option during the development of SP1 and warned users that the image will be corrupted. There are plans to make SP2 directly slipstreamable however Microsoft have made no promises.

So what's Microsoft's current solution?

Note that this is the same method we wrote about in detail back in August in our "Reverse Integration" guide. The new bit of info from Kevin's post is that Microsoft have also been nice enough to give users an additional Re-arm with SP1 meaning you won't lose any of the 3 Re-arms that came with the base Vista RTM install.

Further info is available in the new WAIK documentation and Vista SP1 Deployment Guide or via our "Reverse Integration" guide.

VS2008 SP1 and .NET FX Beta Performance Improvements

David Berg: Visual Studio 2008 SP1 is packed with new features, major updates to frameworks, and fixes. So much so that with everything installed (including x64 and ia86 support) you would need to download and install about 1GB of updates. Which brings us to the first and most important performance improvement you only download what you need!

VS2008 SP1 includes a new installation / update engine. You just download the installer, which then analyzes your system installation, and only downloads the components you need. Thus a default installation of VS2008 Team System will only download about 600mb (and less still if you dont have all the default components installed). Download performance will vary substantially based on your internet connection and network contention; however, it generally outperforms an IE file download, and will automatically restart in the middle if your network connection drops out and comes back. (However, if you cancel the install, it will restart at the beginning.)

iPhone 3GS gets jailbroken and unlocked

Purplera1n, unrelated to the Dev Team, has come out with a solution to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS for both Windows and Intel Mac computers. The jailbreak allows users to download Cydia on their iPhone to install unofficial applications on their device. The jailbreaking solution provided by purplera1n still does not allow Winterboard to be used as of yet. The method installs an application called Freeze onto the device; this installs and unpacks Cydia. Users who install Cydia onto their device can then proceed to install UltraSn0w which was recently released to unlock the iPhone 3G, now unlocks the iPhone 3GS.

Vista SP1 Integration Guide

As we reported a few days ago, the latest build of Vista SP1 released to testers (6001.16633) is in the EXE standalone update format. Many of you will no doubt be wondering as to how exactly the bits can be integrated into a Vista RTM ISO if at all possible.

There's some good news and there's also some bad news.

First of all, it must be noted that we are still unsure if the SP1 update will remain in the EXE format and that anything noted below is subject to change. The primary reason being Microsoft's documentation for Vista Service Packs state that they will be provided in the MSU format whereas it is currently being offered to testers in the EXE format.

Unlike previous service pack updates for older Windows OSes, Microsoft do not provide any switches in the EXE to allow for simple integration. Part of the problem has to do with the completely different format that the Vista Setup DVD uses where each edition of Vista is a separate index in the install.wim and that each index needs to be separately updated. While Microsoft could implement a switch to allow the user to select which index to update or a switch to update all the indexes, it will turn out to be a very lengthy and time-consuming process as we are talking about gigabytes of files that need to be updated/replaced, saved and recompressed. Unfortunately, Vista also does not implement an Updates folder unlike Office 2007 where one could stick all the latest updates in the folder in the ISO and setup would pick them up and install them...

Flight Simulator X Service Pack 1 Now Available

SP1 addresses these post-release customer concerns:
- Activation and installation
- Third-party add-on issues
- Performance enhancements
- Content issues

Also, it is worth noting that SP1 does not include the DirectX 10 update for FSX. The http://blogs.msdn.com/ptaylor/ archive/2007/01/31/fsx-progres s-update-sp1-and-dx10.aspx>DX1 0 update should be released later this year as a separate feature update.

Another note regarding KB935509...

We had a small number of early customer reports, that in some cases, this update (KB935509) was being offered for installation on all Windows Vista editions vs. just Ultimate and Enterprise. A quick adjustment of the applicability logic was released shortly there-after to refine the edition offering behavior. For systems set to download and install updates automatically, the update will not install even if it has already downloaded, so most people will not be affected by this at all. Customers who installed the initial release of the update on editions other than Ultimate or Enterprise should not be concerned as the update will have no negative impact on their systems it was designed to install on all versions of Windows Vista, it is just not required on any of the others for SP1.

Office 2007: First impressions of an average user

OK, well perhaps I am not the average user, but I can say with my hand on my heart that I have never installed any of the Office 2007 Betas and, for what it's worth, not really followed the Office 2007 developement program with as much energy as others.

So, overnight I fired-up my Technet Plus subscription and downloaded Office 2007 Professional with a view to evaluating the final product. The first thing I noticed was the choice of versions available...one of the things I actually was aware of from the various news posts here at bink.nu. Looking through the programs available for each version I settled on the Pro download. At 410meg it wasn't that large, I certainly expected a bigger download. Nice to see. I let it download whilst I caught up on my beauty sleep.

The install of Office 2007 was fantastically simple. I mean that, in fact, I can't believe how much so. Finally, a Microsoft app that asks me for my product key up front and then doesn't bother me again until the end! The install removed my Office 2k3 install and put down 2007. As smoothly as I could have ever wanted.

Again, having not really spent much time going over beta screenshots like some people do, I was really taken back by the UI in Word. Outlook was about as I expected, but Word and Excel really threw me...for about 4 minutes. Seriously, that's all it took. The UI is simple, makes a lot of sense, and wasn't hard at all to 'master'. OK, 1 vote from me.

Windows Live Unified Installer Released

Only days after the initial announcement, the unified installer for all desktop Windows Live products has already released to the web, although not exactly in the expected way.

The "suite" replaces older Windows Live product installers with a single one for every of them, where we expected it to be a standalone package alongside the product installers. You simply download the 1.7MB file, then choose what products you want to download and install. The installer is pretty efficient, as it downloads other products while one of them install instead of waiting for it to finish.

The package can install Photo Gallery, Messenger, Writer, Mail, Family Safety and Toolbar.

Though the changes added to them are unknown, new builds for Mail, Writer, Photo Gallery and Messenger 8.5 Beta have also been released.
