perform a clean install with a
Windows Vista Upgrade DVD. Per
Microsoft's new licensing
requirements for Vista, users
are required to install a
Windows Vista Upgrade from
within Windows XP and to make
matters worse, the Windows XP
license is forfeited. The
process may be tedious, but
few will argue when they
compare the price differences
between the upgrade and retail
versions. Here we go:
- Boot from the
Windows Vista Upgrade DVD and
start the setup
program.
- When prompted
to enter your product key, DO
NOT enter it. Click "Next"
and proceed with setup. This
will install Windows Vista as
a 30-day trial.
- When
prompted, select the edition
of Vista which you have
purchased and continue with
setup.
- Once setup has
been completed and you have
been brought to the desktop
for the first time, run the
install program from within
Windows Vista.
- This
time, type in your product key
when prompted.
- When
asked whether to perform an
Upgrade or Custom (advanced)
install, choose Custom
(advanced) to perform a clean
install of Vista. Yes, this
means that you will have to
install Vista for a second
time.
- Once setup has
completed for the second time,
you should be able to activate
Windows Vista normally. You
can also delete the
Windows.old directory which
contains information from the
first Vista
install.

In response to customer demands Microsoft announced that instead of patching bugs and
improving features of Windows Vista in the next service pack release, they would just install XP.
"We're focused on giving the
customer what they want, and want they want is to just go back to XP," said Microsoft Development Chief Greg Elston.
Elston said
not only will the move improve customer satisfaction with Vista, but will allow the company to focus resources on the next operating system instead of
the flailing Vista. "We can move people off of Vista development now, and move them to Windows 7 development," said Elston. "That should allow us
to only delay Windows 7 by thirteen months past its scheduled date instead of the planned eighteen."

chart, it's relatively confusing. Windows 7 offers no direct upgrade path from XP, which was announced very early on in the Windows 7 development
life cycle. Very specific upgrade paths from other versions of Windows Vista exist also. You can perform a "Custom Install" which is pretty much a
clean install, but you have the option to install Windows 7 to another disk without overwriting data.

On Saturday October 27th, I had the chance to visit the Microsoft campus and join various others in installing the Windows Vista SP1 Beta. Now it has
been a while since I visited the main campus so I drove around for a bit before I went over to the conference center.
After taking in the sights and wishing that
the company I worked for had a soccer field next door, I headed over to the conference center, laptop in hand. When I first got there, all of the
doors were locked and I couldnt see anything through most of the windows. I finally got someones attention after awhile (perhaps I looked suspicious,
trying to peek in any way I could) and was escorted inside over to the registration table for the Vista SP1 install fair.

Microsoft Update Team: This week we're releasing two more prerequisites for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 that will be coming later this quarter. We
wanted to let you know about them because they are both marked as Important updates (and theyre a little different than usual).
KB938371 is a multi-component update that supports the successful install of SP1 and allows it to be uninstalled. KB937287 updates the Windows
Vista Servicing Stack. Both updates (required before SP1 will be offered via Windows Update) are being made available now to reduce the number of
reboots and make installation of the service pack easier.
Even if you're not ready to install the service pack once it's
released, you'll want to install these updates because they'll help increase performance and reduce failures for the installation of other
updates.

Two or three updates are required before you install Windows Vista Service Pack 1. The updates that are required depend on the edition of Windows
Vista that you are upgrading. Prerequisite update 935509 is only applicable to Windows Vista Enterprise and to Windows Vista Ultimate. The other
prerequisite updates that are discussed in this article apply to all editions of Windows Vista.
Before Windows Vista SP1 is
released, these prerequisite updates will be delivered to most users through Windows Update as part of regularly scheduled monthly updates. These
updates will be installed together with other updates that will require that you restart the computer. An additional restart will not be required.
Therefore, this delivery method will simplify installation of these prerequisite updates.
Customers who decide to install Windows
Vista SP1 by using the stand-alone installer, instead of by using Windows Update, will not have to install the prerequisite packages separately. The
prerequisite packages will be installed by the stand-alone installer if they are necessary.

This issue is about re-install network adapter in
Windows Vista and the KB article for this issue will be KB945399 and published in a few days. The issue can be reproduced in many computer models and
you will encounter it when you uninstall a network adapter device using Device Manager. Maybe you have to troubleshoot whether the network adapter
driver installed is right to troubleshoot OS network issue. Therefore, after uninstall the adapter, you may try to install another driver for the
device ... Everything works fine in Windows XP/Server 2003 and so on. However, when you try to do same action in Windows Vista, the popular OS
nowadays, you will see soon after the uninstall process completes, PnP detects the network adapter as a new device and automatically installs the
device and drivers. Instead, in Windows XP, only after you click to scan hardware change, the PnP will detect the network adapter and install the
driver.

Brandon LeBlanc: Today Nick announced the availability of the release candidate for Windows Vista SP1. I had a chance to get the RC build of Windows
Vista SP1 installed a few days ago. I decided to roll the RC out on all of my PCs which showcase a variety of device types and scenarios:
- My Main Desktop PC running Windows Vista Ultimate x64 - check.
- My Test/Work PC running Windows Vista Business - check.
- My Dell Vostro 1500 Laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate - check.
- My Samsung Q1 UMPC running Windows Vista Home Premium - check.
- My Digital CableCard PC running Windows Vista Home Premium - check.
In installing the RC on my PCs, I did a combination of
using the standalone installer and Windows Update. Before proceeding to install the SP1 RC bits, I first needed to uninstall the SP1 beta bits first.
Users looking to install the Windows Vista SP1 RC will need to uninstall any previous version of SP1 prior to the installation of the RC from either
Windows Update or the standalone installer.

Microsoft has published a list of programs that will not work or that will
suffer from reduced functionality after the installation of Vista Service Pack 1.
The list of programs consists mostly of security
applications, such as Trend Micro Internet Security 2008. However, programs such as The New York Times Reader application also feature on the list.
Users are advised to install updates from the application vendor to fix the problem.

Few Windows shops had plans for Windows Vista migrations in 2007, and it appears that there may also be little interest well into next year.
Of more than 200 responses from IT managers to an online survey conducted by SearchWinIT.com, 37.3 % said they had no plans whatsoever in
place to install Vista, while 7.6 % said they would begin adding the new desktop OS in the first quarter of 2008, and 8.5 % expect to begin the
upgrade in Q2 2008.
Application compatibility was the primary concern for the IT shops, with 55.2 % citing it as the biggest
Vista upgrade issue. This was in line with the runner-up concern, third-party application support, which 48.5 % said is stalling their migration
plans.
