19.09.2008Zune firmware hacked for USB drive goodness
I was unaware that you couldn’t use the first-gen Zune as an external drive via USB without hacking it and now, apparently, the new firmware has
locked down that hack. I wouldn’t know, I hardly used my Zune since I didn’t have enough hard drive space on my MacBook to install
Windows, which I’ve done since my upgrade to Leopard and I finally got myself an external.
Oh, XP, how I’ve missed thee.
Nevertheless, the crafty folks over at the Zunerama forums have figured it all out and now you may resume using your Zune as a USB drive.
The usual disclaimers apply: backup your registry first; be very careful; and don’t blame us if things go wrong.

15.11.2007Install Windows Vista from a high speed USB 2.0 Flash Drive
Why would someone want to
install a client OS from a
thumb drive instead of a
DVDROM or over the network?
One reason: Performance.
Installing Windows
Vista from a high speed USB
flash drive is in my
experience the easiest &
fastest way to complete a
Windows Vista install. This is
much faster than using a DVD,
gigabit ethernet, or possibly
even some external USB 2.0
hard drives, due to
differences in access speed &
transfer rate. To put this
into perspective, y'know how
installing Windows on a
Virtual PC virtual machine
from an .ISO CD image is
really, really, really fast?
Imagine something
roughly just as fast, except
for doing installations of the
OS on to actual
workstations.

31.10.2007Fujitsu intros 300GB external drive with 448-bit lock
Normally a producer of
internal disks,
Fujitsu
today rolled out its External
Hard Drive for home or
business users alike who want
absolute certainty about their
files. Bundled with
Cryptainer, the 300GB
mobile-sized drive can guard
volumes with up to 448-bit
Blowfish encryption, making it
one of the most secure
external disks yet.
It also includes a still
significant 256-bit AES
algorithm for circumstances
when encryption speed is at
least as important. The USB
2.0-based storage also has
16-point shock resistance and
an EZ Gig II suite that can
make both straight clones of
drives as well as compressed
images.
The drive
ships during the summer at a
cost of $229 for the full
300GB, 4200RPM model. A
smaller-sized but faster
120GB, 5400RPM edition of the
External Hard Drive will also
be available for $129. Both
drives should work with any
USB 2.0-supporting OS in a
basic form but will require
Windows to use the specialized
backup and security software.

26.02.2008Vista pushes XP and Linux aside on Asus EeePC
The Asus EeePC ships with Linux but with the help of an external DVD drive, its possible to install almost any OS of your choice, even Leopard with a
bit of hacking but that comes with some legal issues that are discussed in
that post.
Lets face it, the Asus EeePC isnt too terribly useful with the Linux install that it comes with, you cant add applications to it
until they are developed and the update installer is somewhat lacking. The first thing I did was wipe the hard drive and install Windows XP Home
Edition but one user decided to install something else.
I wouldnt have thought the EeePC capable of running Vista but according
to the
EeePC forums thats exactly what one user is doing. To be
fair, there may be more but this is the only one I know of.

Report: Microsoft Preps External Blu-Ray Disc Optical Drive for Xbox 360
Unlike Toshiba Corp., which is still strictly against Blu-ray disc (BD) format, Microsoft Corp. has always said that it might release an external

Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology Corp., a joint venture between Samsung Electronics and
Toshiba Corp., has been contracted to manufacture external Blu-ray disc drives for Microsoft Xbox 360 game console. While the exact specifications of
the product are unknown, it is rumoured that Microsoft aims at $100 - $150 price-point for the device in order to compete against Sony PlayStation 3
