27.04.2009Vista and ExpressCards: An Update
Robert Larson: I have heard from some people that they are not able to get an Sil3132 based eSATA ExpressCard to see an attached drive. I thought it
was just a driver issue until recently I was testing a new Dell Inspiron 1420 notebook and experienced the same issue. I could get the driver to
successfully to install on Vista-32, Vista-64, and Windows 2008 RC0. But only Windows 2008 RC0 actually saw an attached disk drive.
I tried everything, updated the firmware of the eSATA card, the latest drivers, different cards (but same 3132 chipset). Nothing worked on
Vista-32 or Vista-64.
I decided to download Vista SP1 and try that.....Voila, it worked the first time. It even loaded the latest
version of the drivers from Windows Update.
I will try and see if I can find a hotfix that addresses this issue and post it, but
wanted to let you know that if you are having this problem, try installing Vista SP1 on a new disk and see if that solves it.
Note that I installed Vista SP1 slipstreamed as part of a new install, I have not tried an upgrade in place.
BTW, if you are
trying to get a Sil3132 card to work under Windows 2008 RC0 x64, go to
www.siliconimage.com and get the latest drivers from their site. Use the Vista-64 drivers, they work fine....so far ;-)

Windows Server 2008 Server
Core installation is a minimal
install of the upcoming
Windows Server OS that can run
specific roles (like DNS,
Active Directory or File
Server) with a much smaller
footprint and attack surface.
In a previous blog post I
looked into overall image
sizes for both and also
discussed some of the details
about the differences between
these Full and the Core
installs. I later discussed
which files are on disk for
each one. Now I am looking at
the processes running in the
the two types of install.
This time I
actually installed a couple of
things on the servers before
looking at them. First of all,
I loaded the Virtual PC
virtual machine extensions.
Second, I loaded the DNS
Server roles (which is
available for both). I did not
furter configure the servers,
but used the systeminfo.exe
and tasklist.exe (which also
exists in both install) to
compare the differences in
loaded process, physical
memory and pagefile memory
used.
My
goal here is not to have very
precise lists, but to get a
feeling for how the two
installs compare. Also note
that Windows Server 2008 is in
pre-release format today
(there is a public Beta 3 and
an
MSDN-and-TechNet-subscribers-o
nly release called June CTP or
IDS3). Keep in mind that this
will most likely change before
final release. The information
here is based on an Enterprise
edition, June CTP install.

less, but the cost of using a bit more relative to the benefits has generally been a posiitve tradeoff. Things have changed recently with the
availability of solid-state drives in capacities significantly smaller than the trend in spinning drives. Traditionally most all software, including
Windows, would not hesitate to consume a 100MB on a specific (justified) need when looking at a 60GB (or 1,500GB ) drive; with desirable machines
shipping with 16GB of solid-state storage, we are looking carefully at the disk space used by Windowsboth at setup time and also as a PC ages. We
also had a specific
session at WinHEC on solid-state
drives that might be interesting to folks. This post is authored by Michael Beck, a program manager in the core OS deployment feature team.

Trying to install Solaris in the past was one of those experiences that made me pine for a prebuilt virtual machine disk format. A new version of Sun
Microsystems' OpenSolaris-based operating system, though, attempts to amend that.
As of Monday,
Solaris Express Developer Edition is now in its third version, craftily named 9/07. Sun
gave the installation routine, for the first time in 12 years, "a complete and massive rewrite," said Dan Roberts, director marketing for Solaris
and OpenSolaris. The new installer has the same plumbing underneath, but presents a much less technically nitty-gritty interface. However, it's still
a first crack and will develop, he added.
"We were seeing significant issues getting started using Solaris, especially for those
not previously familiar with Solaris or other Unix operating systems--folks who grew up in a Linux or Windows culture," Roberts said. "They were
looking at Solaris and finding it fairly dated in certain aspects." ..

and right-clicking on a
notebook; and furnishes
improved keyboard support.
Apple notes that
installation is relatively
painless: "If you previously

can easily update to Boot Camp
1.1.2 beta. You don't need to
partition your hard drive
again (unless you want to
change its size) or reinstall
your Macintosh and Windows
software or documents, but
it's very important to update
the Boot Camp Assistant
software, create a new

DailyTech has posted a 7-step
workaround courtesy of Paul
Thurrott (via Microsoft
internal documents) on how to
perform a clean install with a
Windows Vista Upgrade DVD. Per
Microsoft's new licensing
requirements for Vista, users
are required to install a
Windows Vista Upgrade from
within Windows XP and to make
matters worse, the Windows XP
license is forfeited. The
process may be tedious, but
few will argue when they
compare the price differences
between the upgrade and retail
versions. Here we go:
- Boot from the
Windows Vista Upgrade DVD and
start the setup
program.
- When prompted
to enter your product key, DO
NOT enter it. Click "Next"
and proceed with setup. This
will install Windows Vista as
a 30-day trial.
- When
prompted, select the edition
of Vista which you have
purchased and continue with
setup.
- Once setup has
been completed and you have
been brought to the desktop
for the first time, run the
install program from within
Windows Vista.
- This
time, type in your product key
when prompted.
- When
asked whether to perform an
Upgrade or Custom (advanced)
install, choose Custom
(advanced) to perform a clean
install of Vista. Yes, this
means that you will have to
install Vista for a second
time.
- Once setup has
completed for the second time,
you should be able to activate
Windows Vista normally. You
can also delete the
Windows.old directory which
contains information from the
first Vista
install.

Codes, however Microsoft is using HCCB bar codes so instead of storing the data using square pixels it uses triangle shapes and colours. The
difference is that Microsoft Tags don't actually store the information. All it stores is a unique ID which it then sends to Microsoft's
servers. This way, you can include much more information, and more variety of information, then if it was just on the tag itself.
