How To: Get Windows 7 Aero in a Virtual Machine

This week, Microsoft made the XP Mode RC available to Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate users. Most Virtual Machine emulating software has not offered support for Aero previously, including Microsoft's own Virtual PC 2007. Now, thanks to the powerful set of "Integration Components" in Windows 7 Virtual PC and the enhanced, updated version of Remote Desktop in 7, we can now have the full Aero Glass experience in Windows 7 Virtual Machines, provided the host can handle Aero, and has it enabled. Here's how to get it: This assumes you already have Windows 7 installed on your PC in Virtual PC. Step 1: Enable Aero on your host machine.

Microsoft adds Virtual PC 2007 Beta to Connect

Microsoft will offer testers the chance to test the latest version of Virtual PC dubbed Virtual PC 2007 . This follows the Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Beta program which is scheduled to end on the 30th of March, the same date as Virtual PC 2007 is expected to end.

Testers eager to get their hands on the client version may nominate themselves starting on the 10th of October .

The current version, Virtual PC 2004 -is a powerful software virtualization solution that allows you to run multiple PC-based operating systems simultaneously on one workstation, providing a safety net to maintain compatibility with legacy applications while you migrate to a new operating system. It also saves reconfiguration time, so your support, development, and training staff can work more efficiently.

Microsoft had previously stated "Microsoft will also offer the free download of Virtual PC 2007, with support for Windows Vista, available in 2007."

Install Windows Vista from a high speed USB 2.0 Flash Drive

Why would someone want to install a client OS from a thumb drive instead of a DVDROM or over the network? One reason: Performance.

Installing Windows Vista from a high speed USB flash drive is in my experience the easiest & fastest way to complete a Windows Vista install. This is much faster than using a DVD, gigabit ethernet, or possibly even some external USB 2.0 hard drives, due to differences in access speed & transfer rate. To put this into perspective, y'know how installing Windows on a Virtual PC virtual machine from an .ISO CD image is really, really, really fast?

Imagine something roughly just as fast, except for doing installations of the OS on to actual workstations.

Deployed: Windows Vista SP1 RC on ALL of my PCs

Brandon LeBlanc: Today Nick announced the availability of the release candidate for Windows Vista SP1. I had a chance to get the RC build of Windows Vista SP1 installed a few days ago. I decided to roll the RC out on all of my PCs which showcase a variety of device types and scenarios:

In installing the RC on my PCs, I did a combination of using the standalone installer and Windows Update. Before proceeding to install the SP1 RC bits, I first needed to uninstall the SP1 beta bits first. Users looking to install the Windows Vista SP1 RC will need to uninstall any previous version of SP1 prior to the installation of the RC from either Windows Update or the standalone installer.

Hyper-V and slow guest OS installation

Ben Armstrong: I have seen a number of reviews and comments about the fact that while Hyper-V virtual machines appear to be quite fast once they are up and running - operating system installation seems to take quite a while. The reason for this is relatively easy to explain.

With Virtual Server and Virtual PC we only had emulated devices to use - and as a result we spent a lot of time optimizing and tweaking the performance of these emulated devices. When we implemented the emulated devices under Hyper-V we had to remove many of these optimizations due to the entirely different architecture of Hyper-V. We did not, however, spend much time re-optimizing the emulated devices on Hyper-V because we had the new synthetic device architecture where we have focused our attention for performance tuning.

This means that Hyper-V emulated devices are slower than Virtual Server / Virtual PC emulated devices - but Hyper-V synthetic devices are much faster than Virtual Server / Virtual PC emulated devices.

Virtual PC 2007 Beta Coming Soon...

A new beta program for Virtual PC 2007 has been introduced into the Available Programs list in Microsoft's Connect beta-testing portal. As usual for these early introductions, Microsoft doesn't give any more details on this, except that the program will begin on October 11 and that it will apparently be open to the general public.

Unfortunately, the nominations start date being, too, set on October 11, it is currently impossible to apply for the program. At will end up on March 30, 2006 and nominations will be possible for the whole program's length.

Vista pushes XP and Linux aside on Asus EeePC

The Asus EeePC ships with Linux but with the help of an external DVD drive, its possible to install almost any OS of your choice, even Leopard with a bit of hacking but that comes with some legal issues that are discussed in that post.

Lets face it, the Asus EeePC isnt too terribly useful with the Linux install that it comes with, you cant add applications to it until they are developed and the update installer is somewhat lacking. The first thing I did was wipe the hard drive and install Windows XP Home Edition but one user decided to install something else.

I wouldnt have thought the EeePC capable of running Vista but according to the EeePC forums thats exactly what one user is doing. To be fair, there may be more but this is the only one I know of.
