23.07.2007Dell users face heavy premium for Vista
Dells customers are paying a
heavy premium for personal
computers running Microsofts
Vista, according to data
compiled by Techworld.
Last weeks
LinuxWorld event saw a number
of open source desktop
announcements, including Dell
announcing it was selling its
first Linux-based PCs outside
the US, with the Ubuntu-based
Inspiron 530n desktop, and the
Inspiron 6400n notebook now
available in the UK, France
and Germany.
This step has enabled a
comparison of the typical cost
of a machine running Vista,
compared with the same machine
running an open source
operating system such as
Ubuntu.
The Dell Inspiron 530(n)
desktop comes with an Intel
Dual Core E2140 (1.6GHz)
processor, plus 512Mb of RAM,
a 160Gb hard drive, and a 19
inch panel. When the Inspiron
530 desktop is used as the
benchmark machine, Dell
customers were found to be
paying on average an 18%
premium in the UK for a
machine running Vista,
compared to the same speced
machine running Ubuntu. In the
United States, Dell users are
paying a 20% premium to use
Vista on the same specified
machine.

19.12.2005Dell laptop explodes 'like fireworks'
Another Dell laptop has burst unexpectedly into flames. This one, an Inspiron 9200, spontaneously combusted this week in Columbus, Ohio. The blaze was
caught on camera.
According to a
report on website ConsumerAffairs.com, the laptop went up "like fireworks", its owner, Douglas Brown, claimed. Brown called
the emergency services then grabbed his camera and took a few snaps of the infernal Inspiron.
What's not yet clear is whether
Brown's laptop is one of those covered by the major battery replacement programme Dell put in place a year ago. Certainly, some Inspiron 9200s were
included. If Brown's machine was, it doesn't appear from the ConsumerAffairs.com story that he had returned his original battery to Dell.
If he had - or if his 9200 was not one of those covered by the recall - it raises the possibility that a lot more laptops are going to
have to have their batteries checked. Given recent claims made by Japanese boffins that the design of lithium-ion power cells is inherently
"flawed", perhaps they should be in any case.

25.08.2007Dell Unveils Its First Netbook
Dell, one of the world’s largest producers of personal computers, has unveiled its first netbook, the Inspiron Mini 9 product. The company does
not position its netbook for emerging markets, but concentrates on pushing the Mini 9 in developed countries as a mobile companion for other devices.
Dell Inspiron Mini 9 is based on Intel Atom N270 (1.60GHz) processor as well as an Intel core-logic with integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator
(GMA) 950 graphics core. Depending on actual configuration, the systems may feature 512MB or 1GB of DDR2 memory as well as 4GB, 8GB or 16GB
solid-state drive. Dell Inspiron Mini 9 comes with 8.9” screen that has 1024x600 resolution.
The Inspiron Mini can be further
customized with optional technologies like built-in webcam, bundled with Dell Video Chat, making it easy to stay in touch using video chat, recording
and sending video emails, or even PC-to-PC phone calls around the world; integrated Bluetooth for easy wireless connections to Bluetooth-enabled
accessories like a pair of stereo headphones, a mouse, a printer, etc.

08.09.2008Dell "Mini Inspiron" aims to take on EeePC
Gizmodo Bumped into Michael Dell at
all things digital and scooped a world exclusive.
It's a small form factor notebook, just like the Asus Eee and the HP 2133. Michael
Dell wouldn't tell Gizmodo what OS it's running, or the pricing, but that it's a low-cost notebook meant for developing countries. From
the pictures posted up you can see three USB ports, a card reader and VGA out. Many in the industry refer to laptops like the HP 2133 and Asus Eee as
"netbooks" aimed at the developing world and general consumers.
Dell has not released pricing or specifications for this new
notebook.
Over at the official Dell blog there are some official pictures to backup Gizmodo's story and it seems Dell may be releasing
official specifications very soon. Stay tuned.

29.05.2008Dell launches final Windows XP PC systems
Retail and direct OEM sales of Windows XP will be drying up by the end of this month, so it should not be too surprising that vendors are pushing out
their XP inventory this month. Dell has added three final systems to its XP lineup, which customers will be able to order until June 18.
We have received word from the manufacturer that Dells last XP systems added will be the Inspiron 530s (from $549) and 530 (from $799), as
well as the Inspiron 1520 notebook (from $799). All systems come with Windows XP Home Edition, Intel processors and at least 2 GB of system memory.
The models XPS 210 and XPS 630 models also remain available until midnight June 18.

16.06.2008Dell adds Intel's Penryn to Inspiron notebooks
Dell on Wednesday followed up on previous upgrades to its
XPS line with speed boosts to its
Inspiron line based on Intel's 45 nanometer Penryn processor architecture. The 14-inch
Inspiro
n 1420 and the 17-inch
Inspiro
n 1720 now have the option of Core 2 Duo processors that use Intel's new platform to run cooler as well as faster than older designs. As Dell's
desktop replacement, the 1720 is the fastest and uses a 2.5GHz Core 2 Duo with 6MB of Level 2 cache; the 1420 scales back only slightly by using a
2.4GHz processor with 3MB of Level 2 cache.
