Normally, one would install Virtual PC to run a beta operating system on top of their production environment. In this case however, you might just be risk taking enough to run a beta operating system as your production environment. In such a case, you may have applications or other things that don't work the way you hoped under this operating system. This is where Virtual PC comes in run a production operating system on top of a beta environment. Clever, huh?

20.02.2007Memory Management - x86 Virtual Address Space
In previous posts, we've discussed the
Basics of Memory Management,
Pool Resources
and of course the
/3GB
Switch. Today we're going to take a look at the Virtual Address Space Layouts on a 32-bit system. We'll cover the 64-bit system specifics in a
later post. First, let's cover some basic concepts dealing with the Virtual Address Space in Windows.
There are three main
types of data that are mapped into the virtual address space in Windows:
- per-process private code and data
- sessionwide code and
data
- systemwide code and data
As we discussed previously, each process has its own private address space that cannot be accessed by
other processes unless they have permission to open the process for read or write access. Threads within the process cannot access virtual addresses
outside the private address space unless they map to shared memory sections or use cross-process memory functions.

Microsoft has released updated bits of Windows XP Mode for Windows 7. XP Mode is a method to provide better compatibility in Windows 7, and to pull
it off with as little trouble as possible. It's also dubbed XPM, or formerly Virtual XP. XPM is built on the next generation Microsoft Virtual PC
7 product line, which requires processor-based virtualization support (Intel and AMD) to be present and enabled on the underlying PC, much like
Hyper-V, Microsoft's server-side virtualization platform. XP Mode will bring a Virtual PC-based environment, as well as a fully licensed version
of Windows XP SP3, free for all owners of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions. XPM will provide 100% compatibility with Windows
XP.

04.08.2009Hyper-V and slow guest OS installation
Ben Armstrong: I have seen a number of reviews and comments about the fact that while Hyper-V virtual machines appear to be quite fast once they are
up and running - operating system installation seems to take quite a while. The reason for this is relatively easy to explain.
With Virtual Server and Virtual PC we only had emulated devices to use - and as a result we spent a lot of time optimizing and tweaking the
performance of these emulated devices. When we implemented the emulated devices under Hyper-V we had to remove many of these optimizations due to the
entirely different architecture of Hyper-V. We did not, however, spend much time re-optimizing the emulated devices on Hyper-V because we had the new
synthetic device architecture where we have focused our attention for performance tuning.
This means that Hyper-V emulated
devices are slower than Virtual Server / Virtual PC emulated devices - but Hyper-V synthetic devices are much faster than Virtual Server / Virtual PC
emulated devices.

27.02.2008Virtual Machine Snapshots with Hyper-V
Robert Larson: Snapshots are a new feature of Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. Snapshots are a point in time version of a virtual machine¦..what does that
mean you ask? It means that you can be running a virtual machine, take a snapshot and at any point you can select a previous snapshot and revert back
to that point in time.
You end up with the virtual machine in the EXACT configuration that it was when you took the
snapshot¦and I mean exact¦.memory, virtual hardware, processes, state, etc. So you can have a running virtual machine, take a snapshot, change the
virtual hardware configuration, format the disk and install a different OS, it does not matter, when you apply the previous snapshot it looks exactly
like it did when you took the snapshot.

27.04.2008Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 VHD Available
System Center Configuration Manager 2007 is the next-generation release of Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003. Leverage deep integration with the

A virtualization product that supports the VHD format is required to use this virtual machine. Microsoft
Virtual PC or Microsoft
Virtual Server are provided for free and can be
used with these VHD based virtual machines. Please refer to the Virtual Server 2005 R2 System requirements page

In
addition to the System Requirements for the virtualization product, you will need additional disk and memory resources for running the virtual
machine. This VHD is pre-configured to use approximately 10GB of hard disk space and approximately 512MB of memory.

27.10.2007Viridian and Virtual Server Timing Updates
Mike Neil, General Manager for
Virtualization Strategy at
Microsoft, has wrote up an
entry on the Windows Server
Division WebLog explaining why
Windows Server virtualization
(codename Viridian) and
Virtual Server 2005 R2 service
pack 1 have both been delayed.
The public beta of Windows
Server virtualization will
ship in the second half of
2007, not in the first half as
previously disclosed while
Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP 1
will be available in Q2, not
Q1 as previously stated. In
the interim, customers and
partners will have the
opportunity of downloading a
Release Candidate later this
month.
The delays
are due to Windows Server
virtualization being designed
to scale across a much broader
range of systems: 64bit
processors, a much more
dynamic VM environment with
hot-add of processors, memory,
disk and networking as well a
greater scalability with more
SMP support and memory. Also,
Windows Server is being tuned
for virtualization to run
demanding enterprise IT
workloads, even I/O intensive
workloads. For the Virtual
Server 2005 R2 delay, Neil
explains that additional time
is needed to test the new
operating systems that will be
supported with the service
pack of Virtual Server R2
(SUSE Linux Enterprise Server
10, Solaris 10 and the recent
CTP build of Windows Server
"Longhorn"). Virtual Server
R2 SP1 will work better on
systems with more memory (up
to 256 GB) and more cores.
Support for hardware assisted
virtualization in the form of
Intel VT and AMD-V has also
been added.
In less
than a year, Microsoft has
seen more than 15,000
downloads of the Linux add-ins
for Virtual Server 2005 R2,
which indicates strong
interest to consolidate Linux
workloads on Windows Server.
The recently released Virtual
PC 2007 has had over one
million downloads in the first
38 days. Windows Server
"Longhorn" remains on
schedule: Beta 3 is expected
this half and RTM in the
second half of the year.

04.08.2009Carbon ring storage aims for 1,000 times denser memory
In the land of Germany, Ruijuan Xiao at the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research and a few pals have devised a method of
increasing the density of storage by up to 1,000 times, while at the same time increasing the life of it by huge lengths. MIT's Technology Review
is reporting the advances in technology, which is called carbon ring storage. Apparently, the issue with magnetic memory is making something that can
last longer than about 10 years, and then density of the data depends on the magnetic grains used to construct the modules, but these grains can't
continue to get smaller.
