31.12.2008WebSlices Hit the Desktop
Sarah Perez: I just saw

Sean Lyndersay's new Sidebar gadget called the "

creation brings IE8's WebSlices (bits of web content that you can access from the new IE8 Favorites Bar) right to your desktop via a simple Vista
Sidebar gadget.
The gadget, currently
in alpha (you've been warned!), requires Vista (unknown if x64 supported,
but let us know), IE8, and a web page that has
some WebSlices. Each
instance of the WebSlice Viewer shows only one WebSlice, so you will need to open multiple gadgets to show multiple views.>

2008. The final version of IE8 was distributed via automatic update recently to users still running pre-release versions of IE8, Beta 2/RC1.
Organizations can use the IE8 Blocker Toolkit to block automatic delivery of IE8.

22.01.2009Microsoft Releases IE8 RC1
Earlier today, Microsoft released their near feature-complete "RC1" version of Internet Explorer 8.
Available in 25 different languages
for Windows Vista, XP, and Windows Server 2003/2008, it's
available for download right
now.
According to Microsoft's IE8 team, the browser is "effectively complete and done." Most of the kinks visible in previous betas
have been ironed out; their intent with this beta is to gather feedback about critical issues that seriously impede functionality.
Security issues such as the recent
"Clickjacking" one have been
solved. Sites can protect themselves "out of the box".
They've targeted both technology enthusiasts and the hundreds of millions of
"real users" who use Internet Explorer. From the feedback, they really feel that IE8 is ready to go. That however, is for the users to decide, and
that includes you.
To begin testing of this RC release, a few prerequisites are required:
Firstly, if you are one of the
many people testing any of the Windows 7 Betas, the version available for download will NOT work. It will be available as an update at a later date.
If you don't fall under this category, then the following prerequisites may be applicable to your install of Windows:

14.06.2009IE8, and why fixing that pesky 'tab issue' sealed the deal
In my most recent piece, "IE8, and why it's almost my default browser", I outline a couple of factors that inhibited IE8 from holding the
default browser position on my PC. Since writing that article, due in part to some helpful Neowin members and some quality time with IE8, I have since
awarded IE8 that coveted position on my PC and have promptly thrown Google Chrome to the curb. Perhaps the most taxing of my issues was what has been
colloquially referred to as the 'tab issue'. Many users have complained of severe delays when opening new tabs in Internet Explorer.

04.12.2008Microsoft to push IE8 as an automatic update
Microsoft has announced it plans to offer IE8 via Windows Update. In a move that will likely anger rivals such as Apple and Google, Microsoft will be
pushing Internet Explorer 8 via Windows Update. Google raised concerns back in 2006 when IE7 was originally released via Windows Update. Apple
received negative press last year when it tried to push Safari to iTunes users. Many users never had Safari installed but it was listed under
Apple's software update program for install. The IE8 update will be released as the highest priority update for each operating system. For
Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, it will be listed as Important.

07.01.2009IE7 vs. IE8 in VSTS 2008 SP1 Load test
As we all know, IE8 is coming out soon (Beta 2 is already released) and one of the major performance changes in IE8 is opening up to 6 concurrent
connections per host, comparing to only 2 in IE7.
So, the question is: Does VSTS have IE8? And if it does, does it really open 6
connections per host?

10.10.2008IE8 JavaScript Benchmarks -- It's faster
One of the things immediately noticeable in the latest beta (beta 2) of Internet Explorer 8 was how much faster it is. I thought I'd see for myself
how much faster it
really is by running a JavaScript benchmark, since that is one thing that really has slowed down IE in comparison to its
competitors. Google has put
a benchmark it used while creating their
Chrome browser live on the web, but it also lets us see how IE8 stacks up against its
predecessor. So I ran it.
I ran the test on a 2.8GHz P4 running Windows Vista.
* IE7 benched in at 24, 23
and 29 for an average of 28.6
* IE8 received 37, 40 and 40 for an average of 39
As you can see, IE8 is about 36% faster than IE7 in JavaScript! While it's a good improvement, we can still see that work needs
to be done, and will surely increase with every beta release we see of IE8...

04.09.2008IE8 RTM expected in March
TechARP has predicted that Microsoft will reach IE8's RTM milestone in March during the last 2 weeks. TechARP expects so because Microsoft plans
to announce the final details of the IE8 RTM schedule and available language versions by March 5, 2009. The malaysian website also expects Microsoft
to determine a time frame for the public release of IE8 via Windows Update by March 8. There was a time gap of 8 weeks between IE7's RC1 and its
public release. A similar 8-weeks time limit applied to IE8's RC1 in January suggests the final build's availability around March 23 according
to TechARP.
