Microsoft release 2 updates for IE8 on Windows 7 RC

Microsoft has released two new updates for Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7 RC, via Windows Update. The first update applies only to Windows 7 RC, and will be fixed in the Windows 7 RTM. The first issue resolved is one which, according to the Microsoft Support site, caused the browser to hang, and show this error message: "A webpage is not responding on the following website: (Website name)". The update for this issue requires the browser to restart before it can be applied. The issue is apparently caused by a timer used to detect when web pages have stopped responding, which is normally fine.

Microsoft Releases IE8 RC1

Earlier today, Microsoft released their near feature-complete "RC1" version of Internet Explorer 8.

Available in 25 different languages for Windows Vista, XP, and Windows Server 2003/2008, it's available for download right now.

According to Microsoft's IE8 team, the browser is "effectively complete and done." Most of the kinks visible in previous betas have been ironed out; their intent with this beta is to gather feedback about critical issues that seriously impede functionality.

Security issues such as the recent "Clickjacking" one have been solved. Sites can protect themselves "out of the box".

They've targeted both technology enthusiasts and the hundreds of millions of "real users" who use Internet Explorer. From the feedback, they really feel that IE8 is ready to go. That however, is for the users to decide, and that includes you.

To begin testing of this RC release, a few prerequisites are required:

Firstly, if you are one of the many people testing any of the Windows 7 Betas, the version available for download will NOT work. It will be available as an update at a later date. If you don't fall under this category, then the following prerequisites may be applicable to your install of Windows:

On second thought, IE8 will default to full Web standards

Should Microsoft choose for IE8 to follow the standards developers want or the ones they use ? It's been a tough call, and late yesterday, the company reversed that call. Unlike IE7, IE8 will by default use "Standards mode."..
betanews.com - 04.03.2008

IE8: More Web Standards tests submitted to the W3C

Earlier this year when Internet Explorer 8 Release Candidate was released, the IE team submitted 3784 new test cases to the CSS 2.1 Working Group for inclusion into the CSS 2.1 test suite. And today, the IE team announced that it is submitting 196 new test cases to the CSS 2.1 Working Group for inclusion into the CSS 2.1 test suite. "Today, the IE Team is submitting 196 new test cases to the CSS 2.1 Working Group for inclusion into the CSS 2.1 test suite. These cases were developed since IE8 RC. This brings Microsoft's contribution to the CSS 2.1 Test Suite to 7201 tests.

Downloading IE8 will help feed hungry Americans

Microsoft has announced that for every completed download of Internet Explorer 8, they will donate the financial equivalent of eight meals to the Feeding America network. The campaign is called "Browser for the Better," and runs from June 10 and August 8. Only IE8 downloads from the specific "Browser for the Better" website will count. Microsoft will be donating $1.15 (their reported financial equivalent of eight meals) per download, to a maximum of $1,000,000. Feeding America is the leading domestic hunger-relief charity in the U.S and provides services for more than 25 million low-income individuals. IE8 - Not 'till 2009

Microsoft will issue one more beta of IE8 before releasing it later than its planned date of the end of 2008.

The next beta will essentially be the Release Candidate (end of the beta period) which will arrive in Q1 2009.

Microsoft says: "We want the technical community of people and organizations interested in Web browsers to take this update as a strong signal that IE8 is effectively complete and done."

They state that they will be "very selective" in what changes they make before the final release, and that they will be very clear about any changes they do make.

No final release date has been set, but we can expect it not too long after the shipment of the RC version.

In the meantime, Microsoft encourages developers and end-users to continue beta testing the current Beta 2.

Reminder: Last day to download Windows 7 RC in two days

Two days from now Microsoft will remove the Windows 7 Release Candidate from their website. If you want to test out Windows 7 for free, then you will need to download this before the 20th August, 2009. Windows 7 users who are currently on the release candidate will not have to worry until March 1, 2010 and June 1, 2010 when bi-hourly shutdowns and license expiration's will begin. IE8, and why fixing that pesky 'tab issue' sealed the deal

In my most recent piece, "IE8, and why it's almost my default browser", I outline a couple of factors that inhibited IE8 from holding the default browser position on my PC. Since writing that article, due in part to some helpful Neowin members and some quality time with IE8, I have since awarded IE8 that coveted position on my PC and have promptly thrown Google Chrome to the curb. Perhaps the most taxing of my issues was what has been colloquially referred to as the 'tab issue'. Many users have complained of severe delays when opening new tabs in Internet Explorer.
