Microsoft release 2 updates for IE8 on Windows 7 RC

Microsoft has released two new updates for Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7 RC, via Windows Update. The first update applies only to Windows 7 RC, and will be fixed in the Windows 7 RTM. The first issue resolved is one which, according to the Microsoft Support site, caused the browser to hang, and show this error message: "A webpage is not responding on the following website: (Website name)". The update for this issue requires the browser to restart before it can be applied. The issue is apparently caused by a timer used to detect when web pages have stopped responding, which is normally fine.

IE8 - Not 'till 2009

Microsoft will issue one more beta of IE8 before releasing it later than its planned date of the end of 2008.

The next beta will essentially be the Release Candidate (end of the beta period) which will arrive in Q1 2009.

Microsoft says: "We want the technical community of people and organizations interested in Web browsers to take this update as a strong signal that IE8 is effectively complete and done."

They state that they will be "very selective" in what changes they make before the final release, and that they will be very clear about any changes they do make.

No final release date has been set, but we can expect it not too long after the shipment of the RC version.

In the meantime, Microsoft encourages developers and end-users to continue beta testing the current Beta 2.

IE8, and why fixing that pesky 'tab issue' sealed the deal

In my most recent piece, "IE8, and why it's almost my default browser", I outline a couple of factors that inhibited IE8 from holding the default browser position on my PC. Since writing that article, due in part to some helpful Neowin members and some quality time with IE8, I have since awarded IE8 that coveted position on my PC and have promptly thrown Google Chrome to the curb. Perhaps the most taxing of my issues was what has been colloquially referred to as the 'tab issue'. Many users have complained of severe delays when opening new tabs in Internet Explorer.

Currently, the IE8 Beta testers can download the latest partner build and the rest can download the Beta 2 which is available to public. So, the question is: Does VSTS have IE8? And if it does, does it really open 6 connections per host?

IE8 RTM expected in March

TechARP has predicted that Microsoft will reach IE8's RTM milestone in March during the last 2 weeks. TechARP expects so because Microsoft plans to announce the final details of the IE8 RTM schedule and available language versions by March 5, 2009. The malaysian website also expects Microsoft to determine a time frame for the public release of IE8 via Windows Update by March 8. There was a time gap of 8 weeks between IE7's RC1 and its public release. A similar 8-weeks time limit applied to IE8's RC1 in January suggests the final build's availability around March 23 according to TechARP.

Windows Vista SP2 RC to be released to public next week

Last week we had a rumor that Windows Vista SP2 RC was released to select testers. Microsoft will make SP2 RC available to the general public via TechNet during next week. As expected the final version of SP2 will be made available in the 2nd quarter of 2009.

New IE8 build available for program participants

Internet Explorer 8 beta participants today received a surprising e-mail about 'IE8 Partner Build' released to the IE8 Technical Beta to test and find issues. This build represents a preview of IE8's progress and is best used to verify issues fixed since releasing Beta 2. While Microsoft believes it to be of adequate quality for you to use, is not as extensively tested as a milestone build, so it is not meant for the general public but only for testing purposes. Microsoft is not providing any support for this build and henceforth just like in transition from Beta 1 to Beta 2, if you feel that Microsoft have resolved misfiled your bug, please re-activate the bug.
