13.11.2006I'll take a Java to go please
Sun Microsystems has been developing a new solution to bring Java programmers and applications to the mobile phone to help compete with developers
like Microsoft's Silverlight and Adobe Flash. The introduction to Java on the mobile phone will open up more functionality on a portable device
along with greatest flexibility on how Java developers can create better content and mobile phone applications. So far the line up of compatible
phones are Sony Ericsson, LG, Sprint, Orange, Cynergy Systems, and MobiTV. Even though some phones already come with Java preinstalled onto the
phone, the new mobile Java FX is going to prove to be great for developers for mobile phones to cash in on the application marketplace.

28.02.2008After criticism, Sun changes Java updates
Sun Microsystems Inc. is taking a page from Microsoft Corp.'s security group and changing the way it updates Java for the desktop.
Yesterday, Sun announced that it will start providing advance notification of its Java SE (Standard Edition) security updates and that it will
also scrap its controversial practice of staggering the release of Java patches. Instead, it will release updates for all supported Java SE platforms
simultaneously.
Sun Spokeswoman Jacki Decoster said the changes were designed to make it easier for enterprises to patch all of
their Java systems at once.
But Sun's new system also happens to remedy what some had called a serious security risk.
In July, eEye Digital Security Chief Technology Officer Marc Maiffret blasted Sun for waiting months between the release of some versions
of its desktop Java. In January, Maiffret's company had discovered a serious bug in the Java Network Launching Protocol, which is used to run Java
programs over the Web. But Sun made its fix for the problem available to developers several weeks before it pushed out the update to the Java
community at large...

Projects that pass
Sun's compatibility kit tests
also can use the official Java
logos for free, said Rich
Sands, OpenJDK community
marketing manager at Sun. ..

04.03.2008Java Kernel plan proceeds
Sun continues to work on the Java Kernel, the idea of which is to provide a subset of the Java Runtime Environment tuned to particular programs.
Formerly known as Java Browser Edition, the Java Kernel is planned for release as part of Java Standard Edition (SE) 6 update 4,
probably in early-2008, a Sun representative said on Friday. Developers will have early access to the code to provide feedback.
An original intent was to make Java like a Flash plug-in and enable a resurgence of Java on the browser. Applications would specify which features
they need, such as Swing and XML parsing, said Sun staff engineer Ethan Nicholas, who is working on the project.
"The basic idea
was that the current Java Runtime Environment is simply too big, and most programs require only a small subset of the functionality," Nicholas wrote
in September 2006 on his
blog.
"The 'browser edition' that I suggested would enable you to install exactly the subset of Java that your particular program required, but you would
be able to download all of the other functionality on demand (and thus be fully compatible with J2SE)." ..

applications -- a Java version of the RuneScape online role-playing game and a Java-based Twitter client called Twitter FX -- but developers will have
until the Java Store's public launch at the end of this year to add programs to it.

02.06.2009IE8, and why fixing that pesky 'tab issue' sealed the deal
In my most recent piece, "IE8, and why it's almost my default browser", I outline a couple of factors that inhibited IE8 from holding the
default browser position on my PC. Since writing that article, due in part to some helpful Neowin members and some quality time with IE8, I have since
awarded IE8 that coveted position on my PC and have promptly thrown Google Chrome to the curb. Perhaps the most taxing of my issues was what has been
colloquially referred to as the 'tab issue'. Many users have complained of severe delays when opening new tabs in Internet Explorer.

The IE8 beta 2 support page has been updated again and the support for IE8 pre-released versions has now been bumped to until March 31st, 2009. This
could indicate that the final product may be released during April. Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager, Internet Explorer had officially announced
earlier that there will be one more public update of IE8 in the first quarter of 2009, followed up by the final release. Currently, the IE8 Beta
testers can download the latest partner build and the rest can download the Beta 2 which is available to public. The current IE build version the

10.10.2008IE8 RTM expected in March
TechARP has predicted that Microsoft will reach IE8's RTM milestone in March during the last 2 weeks. TechARP expects so because Microsoft plans
to announce the final details of the IE8 RTM schedule and available language versions by March 5, 2009. The malaysian website also expects Microsoft
to determine a time frame for the public release of IE8 via Windows Update by March 8. There was a time gap of 8 weeks between IE7's RC1 and its
public release. A similar 8-weeks time limit applied to IE8's RC1 in January suggests the final build's availability around March 23 according
to TechARP.
