04.03.2008Lukewarm reaction to first IE8 beta
Yesterday at the
MIX '08 session,
Microsoft employees Ray Ozzie, Dean Hachamovitch and a host of Microsoft partners touted the new Silverlight and IE8 betas to what could be seen (from
my perspective) as a lukewarm reception from the attending crowd, despite the
non apparent excitement from the IT staff at Aston
Martin showing off how they now are able to sell cars to potential buyers, and the Hard Rock Cafe before them, showing off their immense collection of
celebrity memorabilia using the Silverlight technology; even if the latter preferred to use the Firefox browser in doing so!
Neowin members
were among the first that were able to
download Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1, because we had already posted the page where the download links were, but up until noon
yesterday, remained inactive until the first
MIX
'08 keynote was drawing to a close.
One Neowin member said "I can’t even edit my own posts on this. I have to create a new
post." while another noted "Is not bad, I like what I see by now... Live Hotmail doesn't work for me with IE8 but I can get it work with Emulate
IE7 button". It does seem strange that Hotmail doesn't work in "IE8 mode", another Neowin member, Brandon Live, reminded beta users:
"Remember, this release is targetted
at web developers. There are a few other nice new user-facing features (crash recovery, and not having to
open new windows for Protected Mode IE to be on/off for different tabs, etc), but this is far from the complete IE 8 experience". View the whole discussion thread here.
What is your experience
with IE8, did you go back to IE7 or another browser? We'd be interested to hear your comments.

country to get access on mobile devices. Now it's natively supported, ready to go.

IE8, and why fixing that pesky 'tab issue' sealed the deal
In my most recent piece, "IE8, and why it's almost my default browser", I outline a couple of factors that inhibited IE8 from holding the
default browser position on my PC. Since writing that article, due in part to some helpful Neowin members and some quality time with IE8, I have since
awarded IE8 that coveted position on my PC and have promptly thrown Google Chrome to the curb. Perhaps the most taxing of my issues was what has been
colloquially referred to as the 'tab issue'. Many users have complained of severe delays when opening new tabs in Internet Explorer.

Last year when Microsoft launched Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2, Jane Maliouta announced that consumers using Windows XP SP3 would be locked-in with the

IE8 RC1. You can obtain IE8 RC1 from the links on this page. To see if you're one of the people who will have IE8 locked in, follow these steps.

earlier that there will be one more public update of IE8 in the first quarter of 2009, followed up by the final release. Currently, the IE8 Beta
testers can download the latest partner build and the rest can download the Beta 2 which is available to public. The current IE build version the
beta testers can download is 8.0.6001.18344 and the one available in the leaked Windows 7 Beta 1 is 8.0.7000.0.

IE8 RTM expected in March
TechARP has predicted that Microsoft will reach IE8's RTM milestone in March during the last 2 weeks. TechARP expects so because Microsoft plans
to announce the final details of the IE8 RTM schedule and available language versions by March 5, 2009. The malaysian website also expects Microsoft
to determine a time frame for the public release of IE8 via Windows Update by March 8. There was a time gap of 8 weeks between IE7's RC1 and its
public release. A similar 8-weeks time limit applied to IE8's RC1 in January suggests the final build's availability around March 23 according
to TechARP.

How to check your Hotmail in Safari (3 or) 4
Like a lot of other issues with Hotmail and non-IE browsers, you just need to change the User Agent string to fool Hotmail into thinking it is dealing
with a browser it knows about. In Safari, this is pretty easy to do. As far as we can tell, however, Safari doesnt remember the User Agent settings
from session to session, so you would need to reset the User Agent for each new session that you want to check your Hotmail account.

Microsoft warns of latest Windows Live Hotmail phishing scam
Microsoft is warning Windows Live Hotmail users of a recent phishing scam that asks for the person's username, password, date of birth, and country
or territory. It's not clear why the software giant has taken the time to warn users of this particular phishing scam, as this definitely isn't the
first Microsoft- or Hotmail-related one. Hopefully, it has nothing to do with its success rate, but it's likely due to the fact that the e-mail
claims it is from the Windows Live Hotmail team, both in the signature and at the start: "This Email is from Hotmail Customer Care and we are sending
it to every Hotmail Email User Accounts Owner for safety."

New IE8 build available for program participants
Internet Explorer 8 beta participants today received a surprising e-mail about 'IE8 Partner Build' released to the IE8 Technical Beta to test
and find issues. This build represents a preview of IE8's progress and is best used to verify issues fixed since releasing Beta 2. While Microsoft
believes it to be of adequate quality for you to use, is not as extensively tested as a milestone build, so it is not meant for the general public but
only for testing purposes. Microsoft is not providing any support for this build and henceforth just like in transition from Beta 1 to Beta 2, if you
feel that Microsoft have resolved misfiled your bug, please re-activate the bug.

IE8 via Automatic Update for users running IE6 or IE7
Microsoft plans to distribute Internet Explorer 8 to computers running previous versions of IE (IE 6 or IE 7) via Automatic Updates starting from the
3rd week of April. The update will be rolled out gradually from a small user base to large number of users. The update will be a 'high
priority' update for systems running Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and is an 'important' update for Windows Vista and Windows Server
2008. The final version of IE8 was distributed via automatic update recently to users still running pre-release versions of IE8, Beta 2/RC1.
Organizations can use the IE8 Blocker Toolkit to block automatic delivery of IE8.

IE8, and why it's almost my default browser
Microsoft recently released Internet Explorer 8, and while I find that it is a great piece of software, it had a few shortcomings which left Google
Chrome untouched with respects to my default browser selection. There is absolutely no doubt that IE8 is better than IE7, its predecessor. It is
faster, more robust and certainly more stable. There are also some great new features; I am quite fond of IE8's Web Slices. I utilized a web slice

LiveSide: Weve been seeing lots of complaints on Twitter and

rather than waiting for Hotmail to address the problem, Google patched Chrome to work with Hotmail, by adding support for User Agent spoofing and
