Microsoft is currently readying the release of Internet Explorer 8 RC1 for early next week, company sources indicate. In a blog posting by
Microsoft's Frank Olivier, the UX and Compatibility program manager confirms "we're about to release" IE8 RC1. Insiders indicate it might be
worth penning Monday 26th January in your calendar as the date for IE8 RC1. IE8 RC1 will not install on the current Windows 7 beta build (7000) and
it's rumored that Microsoft could be readying some new beta bits for connect testers in the coming weeks. The RC1 build will initially be offered
to Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems.

In March, Microsoft announced that their upcoming Internet Explorer 8 would: "use its most standards compliant mode, IE8 Standards, as the default."
Note the last word: default. Microsoft argued that, in light of their newly published interoperability principles, it was the right thing to do. This
declaration heralded an about-face and was widely praised by the web standards community; people were stunned and delighted by Microsoft's
promise.
This week, the promise was broken. It lasted less than six months. Now that Internet Explorer IE8 beta 2 is released, we know that
many, if not most, pages viewed in IE8 will not be shown in standards mode by default. The dirty secret is buried deep down in the
«Compatibility view» configuration panel, where the «Display intranet sites in Compatibility View» box is checked by default.
Thus, by default, intranet pages are not viewed in standards mode.

default browser position on my PC. Since writing that article, due in part to some helpful Neowin members and some quality time with IE8, I have since
awarded IE8 that coveted position on my PC and have promptly thrown Google Chrome to the curb. Perhaps the most taxing of my issues was what has been
colloquially referred to as the 'tab issue'. Many users have complained of severe delays when opening new tabs in Internet Explorer.

27.01.2009Support for IE8 pre-released versions extended
The IE8 beta 2 support page has been updated again and the support for IE8 pre-released versions has now been bumped to until March 31st, 2009. This
could indicate that the final product may be released during April. Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager, Internet Explorer had officially announced
earlier that there will be one more public update of IE8 in the first quarter of 2009, followed up by the final release. Currently, the IE8 Beta
testers can download the latest partner build and the rest can download the Beta 2 which is available to public. The current IE build version the
beta testers can download is 8.0.6001.18344 and the one available in the leaked Windows 7 Beta 1 is 8.0.7000.0.

TechARP has predicted that Microsoft will reach IE8's RTM milestone in March during the last 2 weeks. TechARP expects so because Microsoft plans
to announce the final details of the IE8 RTM schedule and available language versions by March 5, 2009. The malaysian website also expects Microsoft
to determine a time frame for the public release of IE8 via Windows Update by March 8. There was a time gap of 8 weeks between IE7's RC1 and its
public release. A similar 8-weeks time limit applied to IE8's RC1 in January suggests the final build's availability around March 23 according
to TechARP.

post, he highlighted our responsibility to deliver both interoperability (web pages working well across different browsers) and backwards
compatibility (web pages working well across different versions of IE). We need to do both, so that IE8 continues to work with the billions of pages
on the web today that already work in IE6 and IE7 but also makes the development of the next billion pages (in an interoperable way) much easier.
Continuing Deans theme, Id like to talk about some steps we are taking in IE8 to achieve these goals.
Ive been on the IE team
for over a decade, and Ive seen us apply the Dont Break the Web rule in six different major versions of IE in different ways. In IE 6, we used the
DOCTYPE switch to enable different
modes of behavior to protect compatibility. When we released IE 6 in 2001, very few pages on the web were in standards mode (my team ran a report
on the top 200 web sites at the time that reported less than 1%) few people knew what a DOCTYPE was, and few tools generated them. We used the
DOCTYPE switch in IE6 to
change the box model to comply with the standards and enable developers to
opt-in to the new behavior. Wed already seen so much content written to IE5.xs non-standard interpretation of the CSS2 spec that we couldnt change it
without causing a slew of problems.

In what is probably one of the most fantastic bit of news to
come out of Redmond in a long time, Microsoft has announced today that IE8 will, by default, interpret web content in the most standards compliant way
it can.
Posted on the IEBlog, Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager for the Internet Explorer team explained that IE8 will still also render
pages in an IE7 compatibility mode but that this mode will not be the default as they had
previously announced. The decision to enable
this mode will be left up to the developer of the website being visited, using an http header/meta tag.
“IE8 has been significantly
enhanced, and was designed with great support for current Internet standards. This is evidenced by the fact that even in its first beta, IE8 correctly
renders the popular test known as ‘Acid2,’ which was created by the Web community to promote real-world interoperability,” said Ray
Ozzie, Microsoft chief software architect. “Our initial plan had been to use IE7-compatible behavior as the default setting for IE8, to minimize
potential impact on the world’s existing Web sites. We have now decided to make our most current standards-based mode the default in IE8.
While this change may require some work for developers of sites currently designed around Microsoft's previous rendering mode, the changes
required should be minor and going forward will make the development of true standards based websites, that everyone can enjoy, much easier.

04.03.2008New IE8 build available for program participants
Internet Explorer 8 beta participants today received a surprising e-mail about 'IE8 Partner Build' released to the IE8 Technical Beta to test
and find issues. This build represents a preview of IE8's progress and is best used to verify issues fixed since releasing Beta 2. While Microsoft
believes it to be of adequate quality for you to use, is not as extensively tested as a milestone build, so it is not meant for the general public but
only for testing purposes. Microsoft is not providing any support for this build and henceforth just like in transition from Beta 1 to Beta 2, if you
feel that Microsoft have resolved misfiled your bug, please re-activate the bug.

11.12.2008IE8 via Automatic Update for users running IE6 or IE7
Microsoft plans to distribute Internet Explorer 8 to computers running previous versions of IE (IE 6 or IE 7) via Automatic Updates starting from the
3rd week of April. The update will be rolled out gradually from a small user base to large number of users. The update will be a 'high
priority' update for systems running Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and is an 'important' update for Windows Vista and Windows Server
2008. The final version of IE8 was distributed via automatic update recently to users still running pre-release versions of IE8, Beta 2/RC1.
Organizations can use the IE8 Blocker Toolkit to block automatic delivery of IE8.

11.04.2009IE8, and why it's almost my default browser
Microsoft recently released Internet Explorer 8, and while I find that it is a great piece of software, it had a few shortcomings which left Google
Chrome untouched with respects to my default browser selection. There is absolutely no doubt that IE8 is better than IE7, its predecessor. It is
faster, more robust and certainly more stable. There are also some great new features; I am quite fond of IE8's Web Slices. I utilized a web slice
for Digg's top stories and to observe some stock quotes and I found it seamless and quite enjoyable.
