IE8 via Automatic Update for users running IE6 or IE7

Microsoft plans to distribute Internet Explorer 8 to computers running previous versions of IE (IE 6 or IE 7) via Automatic Updates starting from the 3rd week of April. The update will be rolled out gradually from a small user base to large number of users. The update will be a 'high priority' update for systems running Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and is an 'important' update for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. The final version of IE8 was distributed via automatic update recently to users still running pre-release versions of IE8, Beta 2/RC1. Organizations can use the IE8 Blocker Toolkit to block automatic delivery of IE8.

IE8 JavaScript Benchmarks -- It's faster

One of the things immediately noticeable in the latest beta (beta 2) of Internet Explorer 8 was how much faster it is. I thought I'd see for myself how much faster it really is by running a JavaScript benchmark, since that is one thing that really has slowed down IE in comparison to its competitors. Google has put a benchmark it used while creating their Chrome browser live on the web, but it also lets us see how IE8 stacks up against its predecessor. So I ran it.

I ran the test on a 2.8GHz P4 running Windows Vista.

* IE7 benched in at 24, 23 and 29 for an average of 28.6
* IE8 received 37, 40 and 40 for an average of 39

As you can see, IE8 is about 36% faster than IE7 in JavaScript! While it's a good improvement, we can still see that work needs to be done, and will surely increase with every beta release we see of IE8...

IE8, and why it's almost my default browser

Microsoft recently released Internet Explorer 8, and while I find that it is a great piece of software, it had a few shortcomings which left Google Chrome untouched with respects to my default browser selection. There is absolutely no doubt that IE8 is better than IE7, its predecessor. It is faster, more robust and certainly more stable. There are also some great new features; I am quite fond of IE8's Web Slices. I utilized a web slice for Digg's top stories and to observe some stock quotes and I found it seamless and quite enjoyable.

IE8 RTM expected in March

TechARP has predicted that Microsoft will reach IE8's RTM milestone in March during the last 2 weeks. TechARP expects so because Microsoft plans to announce the final details of the IE8 RTM schedule and available language versions by March 5, 2009. The malaysian website also expects Microsoft to determine a time frame for the public release of IE8 via Windows Update by March 8. There was a time gap of 8 weeks between IE7's RC1 and its public release. A similar 8-weeks time limit applied to IE8's RC1 in January suggests the final build's availability around March 23 according to TechARP.

IE8 Performance

Google has commented on our IE8 Beta 1 improvements, and we’ve made IE8 even faster since then. Some of the tests we have done show pure JScript performance improvements up to 2.5 times. We also measured the performance gains on common Gmail operations, like loading the inbox (34%), opening a conversation (45%) and opening a thread (27%) compared to IE7. Thus far, tweaks to the JScript engine have contributed to improve IE8’s performance on the SunSpider benchmarking suite by 400% compared to IE7.

The second area in which we are invested heavily in IE8 is in improvements to our memory usage. To date we have fixed just under 400 separate memory leaks in Internet Explorer. For users, these changes reduce the amount of memory consumed by IE, improve our startup times, speed up navigating between pages, and help IE remain stable for longer periods of time. As we started building IE8 it was clear that we could do more to take advantage of the increasing prevalence of high bandwidth connections. Two key improvements we made with IE8 were to unblock downloads in the presence of external scripts and to increase the number of parallel connections per server that we support.

IE8 to be More Reliable

In a post on the IEBlog today, the development team announced some brand new features to IE8, which they say will improve the browser's reliability.

The most notable improvement is dubbed "Loosely-Coupled IE" (or "LCIE" for short). LCIE essentially splits the browser into several pieces, therefore should one part of the browser crash, the rest of the browser can continue to function. So say a web page you are currently viewing in one tab locks up, in IE7, this would mean all other tabs are locked as well, however with IE8; the remaining tabs are still accessible and fully functional.

Another anticipated feature is the new Automatic Crash Recovery, in which IE8 is capable of recovering any tab, as well as any unsaved form data within that tab, should it crash.

For details outlining the remaining features, continue reading at the IEBlog.

Microsoft to push IE8 as an automatic update

Microsoft has announced it plans to offer IE8 via Windows Update. In a move that will likely anger rivals such as Apple and Google, Microsoft will be pushing Internet Explorer 8 via Windows Update. Google raised concerns back in 2006 when IE7 was originally released via Windows Update. Apple received negative press last year when it tried to push Safari to iTunes users. Many users never had Safari installed but it was listed under Apple's software update program for install. The IE8 update will be released as the highest priority update for each operating system. For Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, it will be listed as Important.

Microsoft: All versions of IE have critical new bug

Microsoft has confirmed that the unpatched bug in Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) that hackers are now exploiting also exists in older versions of the browser, including the still-widely-used IE6. It adds IE6 and IE8 Beta 2 to the list and recommends disabling the Oledb32.dll to stay safe. A Danish security researcher added that Microsoft's original countermeasure advice was insufficient and recommended that users take one of the new steps the company spelled out. In a revised security advisory, Microsoft said research confirmed that the bug is within all its browsers, including those it currently supports -- IE5.01, IE6 and IE7 -- as well as IE8 Beta 2, a preview version that the company doesn't support through normal channels.

IE8 development: Microsoft should learn from Apple, Mozilla

Internet Explorer 8 is set to be Microsoft's most standards compliant browser ever. After originally stating that IE8 would default to the same noncompliant behavior exhibited by IE7, Microsoft relented and plumped for standard-by-default.

The first beta of IE8 was released in March and it did indeed default to standards compliance. Web developers have been clamouring for standards compliance for a long time; IE is a long way behind the competition, requiring considerable hacks and workarounds to get pages working properly. IE8 should make things a lot better—but it will still fall far short of the standards set by Firefox, Safari, and Opera. Some of these problems are technical, but others are cultural. Where the other browser developers are open and communicative, Microsoft is still leaving web developers in the dark.

Microsoft warns of IE8 lock-in with XP SP3

Microsoft yesterday warned users of Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) that they won't be able to uninstall either the service pack or Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) under some circumstances. The warning was reminiscent of one Microsoft made in May, when Windows XP SP3 had just been made available for downloading. At the time, the company told users they wouldn't be able to downgrade from IE7 to the older IE6 browser without uninstalling the service pack.

In a post to the IE blog today, Jane Maliouta, a Microsoft program manager, spelled out the newest situation, which affects users who downloaded and installed IE8 Beta 1 prior to updating Windows XP to SP3. If those users then upgrade IE8 to Beta 2 , which Microsoft unveiled today, they will be stuck with both IE8 and Windows XP SP3. A warning dialog will appear to alert users. "If you chose to continue, Windows XP SP3 and IE8 Beta2 will become permanent," Maliouta said. "You will still be able to upgrade to later IE8 builds as they become available, but you won't be able to uninstall them."

Internet Explorer 8 In The Works

It seems Microsoft is putting IE8 development into gear. Participants of the Windows Server "Longhorn" beta program on Microsoft Connect have just received an email notifying them that a new survey for Internet Explorer 8 has been published on the program site.

The survey contains a few questions on the current usability of IE7 and asks the users what new features they would like to see in IE8. The survey also asks users to rank the importance of several planned features.

The email mentions that the survey should be completed before Thursday, March 1st, 2007; giving us a vague peak at the timeline for IE8.
