Microsoft Update now works with IE7
When
Internet Explorer 7 Beta released to testers it left testers with a broken Windows Update that wouldn't load properly, disabling the ability to update Windows with critical patches that have been released since the end of July. This seems to of been fixed and on my PC it even redirects to Microsoft Update before my chosen homepage is loaded.

18.02.2006WGA Removed From IE7 Update
From the
Internet Explorer Team Blog:
Almost a year ago, we released Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP. Since then, IE7 is well on its way to becoming the most used browser in the world,
and we've seen lots of evidence that IE7 makes it safer and easier to accomplish everyday tasks online. For example, the built-in Phishing Filter has
protected consumers from known phishing web sites an average of 900,000 times per week. IE7 is the first - and still the only - browser with native
support for Extended Validation SSL Certificates that help prevent online fraud. (Of course, tabbed browsing, QuickTabs, shrink-to-fit printing, an
easily customizable search box, CSS improvements, and some add-ons are all good things too.)
Because Microsoft takes its commitment to help
protect the entire Windows ecosystem seriously, we're updating the IE7 installation experience to make it available as broadly as possible to all
Windows users. With today's "Installation and Availability Update," Internet Explorer 7 installation will no longer require Windows Genuine
Advantage validation and will be available to all Windows XP users. If you are not already running IE7, you can get it now from the
Internet Explorer home page on Microsoft.com, get a customized version from a third-party
site, or, if you haven't already received it via Automatic Updates, this version will be delivered to you as we described previously. If you are
already running IE7, you will not be offered IE7 again by
Automatic Updates.
Additionally, we've made minor changes to IE7 for Windows XP based on customer feedback ->

26.10.2006Microsoft warns corporate users of auto-update to IE7
Microsoft Corp. has warned corporate administrators that it will push a new version of Internet Explorer 7 their way next month, and has posted
guidelines on how to ward off the automatic update if they want to keep the older IE6 browser on their companies' machines.
The IE7
upgrade scheduled to roll out via WSUS (Windows Server Update Services) on Feb. 12 was announced last October, when Microsoft said it would no longer
require users to prove they owned a legitimate copy of Windows XP before they were allowed to download the newer browser. Microsoft explained that the
move was prompted by security concerns.

17.01.2008IE7 for Windows XP Moves to Optional Updates
Some of our members are
reporting that earlier today Microsoft
removed Internet Explorer 7
from Critical updates (or
forced Automatic Updates if
set to Automatic) to Optional
updates, after a brief
disappearance all together
from the Windows Update
site.
Initial
reports indicate that Windows
Server 2003 still gets IE7 as
a critical update, most likely
because of the in-built
"hardening" that forces
Internet Explorer to confirm
web browsing outside of the
local intranet. Hardening is
set by default on Windows
Server 2003, a significant
security update over IE6.
However, the forced
update to IE7 on Windows XP
systems had Microsoft
scrambling to issue a patch
that blocks IE7 from being
shown on Windows Update.
Generally speaking IT system
managers roll out a browser
update only after extensive
testing, not when Microsoft
makes it available. I'd say
this move is one where
Microsoft really is listening
to the customer, and has been
widely appreciated in our
board
discussion.

10.10.2007The First Year of IE7
It’s been a little over a year since we released IE7 on Windows XP and for Windows Vista, so I thought it would be worthwhile to talk about
where we are after the year.
According to internal Microsoft research based on data from
Visual Sciences Corporation, there are over 300 million users are experiencing the web with IE7. This makes IE7 the
second most popular browser after IE6. IE7 is already #1 in the US and UK, and we expect IE7 to surpass IE6 worldwide shortly.
Perhaps more
important than the overall numbers is the positive impact IE7 has made for our users. As you know, we focused a lot on improving security in IE7. We
believe IE 7 is the safest Microsoft browser released to date. According to a
vulnerability report published today, IE7 has fewer vulnerabilities than previous versions of IE over the same time
period. What’s more, the report showed that IE7 had both fewer fixed and unfixed vulnerabilities in the first year than the other browsers we
compared.

03.12.2007Microsoft to push IE8 as an automatic update
Microsoft has announced it plans to offer IE8 via Windows Update. In a move that will likely anger rivals such as Apple and Google, Microsoft will be
pushing Internet Explorer 8 via Windows Update. Google raised concerns back in 2006 when IE7 was originally released via Windows Update. Apple
received negative press last year when it tried to push Safari to iTunes users. Many users never had Safari installed but it was listed under
Apple's software update program for install. The IE8 update will be released as the highest priority update for each operating system. For
Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, it will be listed as Important.

10.10.2006Neowin Asks: Who can't upgrade to IE7?
As most Neowin visitors know
by now, Windows Internet
Explorer 7 was released this
week. While there are probably
a few of you who will not
upgrade immediately because
you use another browser
(Firefox, Opera, etc) the
question of the day is... are
those, the people like you out
there who cannot
upgrade to IE7?
I
can't, at least not at work.
The private university I work
for has multiple programs that
simply will not function on
systems with IE7 installed on
them. As reflected in a letter
sent our by my boss to our
campus, "these vendors
continue to work toward
support, but it will likely be
January or February of 2007
before that support becomes
official."
While I
in no way blame Microsoft for
this -- these vendors, Cisco
being among them, have had
ample time to test the IE7
beta and RCs -- the fact of
the matter is our organization
cannot allow systems to be
upgraded on our campus, even
student machines (which
require a school issued Cisco
program to access our network,
that program breaks with
IE7.)
Are there
programs that you or your
company use that have forced
you to stay at IE6? Please
comment and share.
