As in the case of the inhouse competition between Windows XP and Windows Vista, due to its prolonged support strategy, Microsoft is also one of its most fierce and stubborn competitors on the browser market.

29.08.2008The First Year of IE7
It’s been a little over a year since we released IE7 on Windows XP and for Windows Vista, so I thought it would be worthwhile to talk about
where we are after the year.
According to internal Microsoft research based on data from
Visual Sciences Corporation, there are over 300 million users are experiencing the web with IE7. This makes IE7 the
second most popular browser after IE6. IE7 is already #1 in the US and UK, and we expect IE7 to surpass IE6 worldwide shortly.
Perhaps more
important than the overall numbers is the positive impact IE7 has made for our users. As you know, we focused a lot on improving security in IE7. We
believe IE 7 is the safest Microsoft browser released to date. According to a
vulnerability report published today, IE7 has fewer vulnerabilities than previous versions of IE over the same time
period. What’s more, the report showed that IE7 had both fewer fixed and unfixed vulnerabilities in the first year than the other browsers we
compared.

15.08.2005IE7 now on 100 million systems
Tony Chor, the Group Program
Manager for the Internet
Explorer team claims 100
millionth download of IE7
I'm pleased to report
that on January 8th, we had
the 100 millionth IE7
installation. However, even
more important than
installations is usage.
According to
WebSideStory
(the company we use to
measure browser usage), as of
this week, over 25% of all
visitors to websites in the US
were using IE7, making IE7 the
second most used browser after
IE6. We expect these numbers
to continue to rise as we
complete our final localized
versions, scale up AU
distribution, and with the
consumer availability of
Windows
Vista on January 30, 2007.
If you haven't
installed IE7 for Windows XP
yet, you can
download it
here. You won't need to
download it for Windows Vista
as it has IE7 built in with
all the same features as the
XP version, plus
Protected
Mode.

11.12.2008Another exploit targets IE7 bug
Trend Micro has warned that attackers are already exploiting a bug in IE 7 that was patched by Microsoft in the Security update last week with
critical status. Trend Micro researchers have spotted a small-scale attack in the weekend that exploits an IE 7 flaw to install a spy software that
looks similar to the one that was sent to pro-Tibetan groups in January 2008. The malware XML_Dloadr.a is triggered when the user is tricked to open a
malicious Word document that arrives in spam and uploads stolen information on port 443 to a site in China which acts as the hacker's
command-and-control server.

23.11.2006Microsoft prepares IE7 Beta 3
for mid-August
The Hotfix is reporting a
Microsoft source has quietly
leaked that IE7 Beta 3 will be
availible to the public
sometime in mid-August of this
year. This goes hand-in-hand
with official MS reports that
they are indeed working on
Beta 3 at the moment.
One fix going in
Beta 3 will be will be to
revert back to an IE6 behavior
when using PHP pages. One IE7
tester noted that "when it
comes to compare the code in
the session variable and the
code in the post data,
they're different." Eric
Lawrence of Microsoft
responded with "for
compatibility reasons, we're
going to revert to IE6
behavior for IE7 Beta 3 to
prevent this exact issue" on
the subject.

26.10.2006Neowin Asks: Who can't upgrade to IE7?
As most Neowin visitors know
by now, Windows Internet
Explorer 7 was released this
week. While there are probably
a few of you who will not
upgrade immediately because
you use another browser
(Firefox, Opera, etc) the
question of the day is... are
those, the people like you out
there who cannot
upgrade to IE7?
I
can't, at least not at work.
The private university I work
for has multiple programs that
simply will not function on
systems with IE7 installed on
them. As reflected in a letter
sent our by my boss to our
campus, "these vendors
continue to work toward
support, but it will likely be
January or February of 2007
before that support becomes
official."
While I
in no way blame Microsoft for
this -- these vendors, Cisco
being among them, have had
ample time to test the IE7
beta and RCs -- the fact of
the matter is our organization
cannot allow systems to be
upgraded on our campus, even
student machines (which
require a school issued Cisco
program to access our network,
that program breaks with
IE7.)
Are there
programs that you or your
company use that have forced
you to stay at IE6? Please
comment and share.
