Stuck on IE6? Gmail's got your back.

Like many companies, the company I work for is mainly IE6. The older machines are running Windows 2000 and some of our clients applications (applications we have no control over) don't work with IE7.

We recently tested Gmail Apps to use for the majority of our agents and one of the biggest problems with the web interface was the lack of features that are available in other browsers. With the newest version of Gmail, this is a problem of the past.

Gmail has been working with IE engineers at Microsoft to fix some of the problems they found with their code and how it works with IE6. In order to see these changes you will need to install the latest updates from Microsoft (or specifically the update described in MS08-022).

New confirmed features for IE6 users include colored labels, invisible mode and Gmail Labs. With Google trying to compete in the enterprise email sector I believe this is a step in the right direction. What do you think about this change?

Microsoft: All versions of IE have critical new bug

Microsoft has confirmed that the unpatched bug in Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) that hackers are now exploiting also exists in older versions of the browser, including the still-widely-used IE6. It adds IE6 and IE8 Beta 2 to the list and recommends disabling the Oledb32.dll to stay safe. A Danish security researcher added that Microsoft's original countermeasure advice was insufficient and recommended that users take one of the new steps the company spelled out. In a revised security advisory, Microsoft said research confirmed that the bug is within all its browsers, including those it currently supports -- IE5.01, IE6 and IE7 -- as well as IE8 Beta 2, a preview version that the company doesn't support through normal channels.

Firefox eclipses IE6 in web share, threatens IE7

Firefox 3 has become the first non-Microsoft web browser to overtake Internet Explorer 6 in market share, according to new data from StatCounter. The open source browser climbed to 24 percent of users in February while IE6 dipped to just over 22.6 percent, making Firefox the second most popular browser by individual version. Although Internet Explorer 7 still leads with 40.8 percent, the Firefox increase narrows the gap as Microsoft's browser has remained largely flat since at least July.

IE8 via Automatic Update for users running IE6 or IE7

Microsoft plans to distribute Internet Explorer 8 to computers running previous versions of IE (IE 6 or IE 7) via Automatic Updates starting from the 3rd week of April. The update will be rolled out gradually from a small user base to large number of users. The update will be a 'high priority' update for systems running Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and is an 'important' update for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. The final version of IE8 was distributed via automatic update recently to users still running pre-release versions of IE8, Beta 2/RC1. Organizations can use the IE8 Blocker Toolkit to block automatic delivery of IE8.

Google brings Chrome rendering engine to IE6, 7 and 8

A thorn in the side of many web developers is Internet Explorer 6. It's an old browser that has many annoyances that cause those creating websites to have to add additional code just to have things render as they should. Google, being a company that develops a web browser, has taken it upon themselves to solve this problem somewhat. It has just released an early version of a project called Google Chrome Frame, which, when used, will cause Internet Explorers 6 through 8 to use Chrome's rendering engine, not their default one. This allows stubborn users (or those in a workplace environment) to continue using the browser they want to, and no longer aggravate web developers.

YouTube to drop support for IE6

YouTube will soon be dropping support for Internet Explorer 6 as it attempts to move users to a "more modern browser". Google, who owns YouTube, is pushing for users to upgrade to Chrome, Firefox or IE. It's no surprise that they are pushing for users to switch to Chrome with two advertisements to download the browser which Google is using to challenge Microsoft's IE 8. TechCrunch cites that YouTube is trying to follow in Digg's footsteps where it recently expressed interest in dropping support for the legacy browser. "Digg's User Experience Architect Mark Trammell at the time wrote that the site is strongly considering removing essential features like digging and commenting for IE6 users.

Google barks back at Microsoft over Chrome Frame security

Google hit back at Microsoft today, defending the security of its new Chrome Frame plug-in and claiming that the software actually makes Internet Explorer (IE) safer and more secure.

"Accessing sites using Google Chrome Frame brings Google Chrome's security features to Internet Explorer users," said a Google spokesman today. "It provides strong phishing and malware protection, absent in IE6, robust sandboxing technology , and defenses from emerging online threats that are available in days rather than months."

Desktop grade IE6 coming to Windows Mobile 6.1 Q4 2008

Nice find from our friends at MoDaCo:

"This wasn't really covered back at the Windows Mobile 6.1 launch at CTIA, partly because we were a bit slack when it came to the actual Windows Mobile 6.1 announcement when it FINALLY came and partly because the press release was so, well, vauge... but Microsoft did made a significant announcement regarding Pocket Internet Explorer, and I figured today was as good a day as any to round up the facts.

Right, so as the title suggests... "Desktop grade IE6 is coming to Windows Mobile 6.1 by the end of 2008".

The official release comes in the form of the 6.1 announcement at Microsoft PressPass

IE 'unsafe' for 284 days last year

Using IE6 was "unsafe" 284 days last year even for users who patched their systems as soon as Microsoft released fixes. An analysis by the Washington Post's Stuart Krebs revealed that exploit code for critical unpatched flaws in IE6 was available for three-quarters of the time last year.

Even worse, for at least 98 days last year no patches were available for flaws that were been actively exploited by hackers to steal personal data. Firefox users, by comparison, were exposed to critical, unpatched flaws that were actively exploited for just nine days last year. This single period of exposure compares to multiple overlapping periods of vulnerability faced by IE6 users.

Microsoft prepares IE7 Beta 3 for mid-August

The Hotfix is reporting a Microsoft source has quietly leaked that IE7 Beta 3 will be availible to the public sometime in mid-August of this year. This goes hand-in-hand with official MS reports that they are indeed working on Beta 3 at the moment.

One fix going in Beta 3 will be will be to revert back to an IE6 behavior when using PHP pages. One IE7 tester noted that "when it comes to compare the code in the session variable and the code in the post data, they're different." Eric Lawrence of Microsoft responded with "for compatibility reasons, we're going to revert to IE6 behavior for IE7 Beta 3 to prevent this exact issue" on the subject.

In the past few weeks Microsoft has made a few references to IE7 Beta 3 on their IE Blogs about bug fixes and releases. IE7 Final is set for a Winter 2006 release.

The First Year of IE7

It’s been a little over a year since we released IE7 on Windows XP and for Windows Vista, so I thought it would be worthwhile to talk about where we are after the year.

According to internal Microsoft research based on data from Visual Sciences Corporation, there are over 300 million users are experiencing the web with IE7. This makes IE7 the second most popular browser after IE6. IE7 is already #1 in the US and UK, and we expect IE7 to surpass IE6 worldwide shortly.

Perhaps more important than the overall numbers is the positive impact IE7 has made for our users. As you know, we focused a lot on improving security in IE7. We believe IE 7 is the safest Microsoft browser released to date. According to a vulnerability report published today, IE7 has fewer vulnerabilities than previous versions of IE over the same time period. What’s more, the report showed that IE7 had both fewer fixed and unfixed vulnerabilities in the first year than the other browsers we compared.
