04.01.2006Microsoft Portable Media Center, RIP: 2004 - 2006
David Bono, a Microsoft
employee, has posted in the
microsoft.public.windows.media
center.portable newsgroup to
confirm the demise of the
Portable Media Center
(PMC).
"Microsoft
is no longer licensing the PMC
software. Here is an
announcement that was sent out
last year to our PMC
partners:
In early
2006, Microsoft released the
second version of Windows
Mobile for Portable Media
Centers to our partners. The
second version of the Portable
Media Center software enhanced
the end user experience and
enabled partners to build
smaller, less expensive and
more competitive devices.
As part of the ongoing
review of our product
investments, we have decided
to take what we have learned
from our investments in
Portable Media Center and
focus our product and
marketing resources on
building media experiences on
connected Windows Mobile
powered devices.
With the re-investment of
resources in media experiences
on connected Windows Mobile
powered devices, Portable
Media Center 2.0 is the last
version of our Portable Media
Center software under the
Windows Mobile brand. We do
not plan any future Portable
Media Center software upgrades
or marketing activities.
Thank you for all your
support- Microsoft is proud of
its work, the work of its
partners and the devices and
services delivered as a result
of those relationships. We
will continue to work with
existing Portable Media
Centers licensees to ensure
that devices they are
developing come to
market."

27.02.2008Study: Portable game console
within 2 years
According to a study by
Diffusion Group, Microsoft
appears poised to put out a
portable video game device by
late 2007 or early 2008.
In a Wednesday
release, the analyst firm
touted its new study, called
"On the future of portable
game consoles," which
suggests that Microsoft is
getting ready to challenge
Sony's PlayStation Portable.
The idea, the
firm said, is that with Xbox
360 firmly entrenched as the
(current) market leader,
Microsoft is now ready to take
on the lucrative handheld
gaming device market,
especially since there's a
predicted $3 billion in annual
sales at stake.

02.06.2006IEEE 1667 portable security for your office
There is a massive lack of security when it comes to portable thumb drives, external hard drives, MP3 players and the variety in a sensitive
environment. It's an alarming situation at many offices that data can quickly and effectively be stolen. That is all, hopefully, about to
change. The IEEE 1667 standard is set out to only allow authorized drives to be connected to a computer. Essentially a company could hand out USB
drives to its employees that only work on the computer as authorized by the IT department. This differs from today because this is only offered by
third party providers.

09.12.2008Microsoft sees portable datacenters everywhere
Portable datacenters will be key to supporting the surging demand for online services, but equipment vendors need to start designing products
especially for them, a Microsoft engineer said Wednesday.
Microsoft has already shown its enthusiasm for portable datacenters,
which cram hundreds of servers into a standard 20-foot (6.1 meter) shipping container that can be delivered wherever it's needed, so long as there is
a power supply and network connection.
The company has said it will put more than 200 of them on the first floor of a datacenter
it's building in Chicago, and it is already operating at least one of its online services, Virtual Earth, from a portable datacenter in Colorado.
