In Soviet Russia, Windows 7 finds you
Long Zheng: If you thought you knew all there is to know about Windows 7 Milestone 1 Build 6519, think again.
TGDaily and
ThinkNext may have
broken the news, but both have done a pretty sloppy job of uncovering what is exactly in Windows 7 M1. This is where the trusty Russians come in.
Microsoft enthusiast
“Raiker” has recently posted his own findings of this infamous yet mysterious leaked build of Windows 7.
Surprisingly weeks after the first screenshots were published, he’s still able to uncover some small gems the other guys missed. The article was
written in Russian, but Google Translate helps get most of the ideas across.

18.04.2009Internet Security Patch May Not Do the Job
Faced with the discovery of a serious flaw in the Internets workings, computer network administrators around the world have been rushing to fix their
systems with a cobbled-together patch. Now it appears that the patch has some gaping holes.
On Friday, a Russian physicist
demonstrated that the emergency fix to the
basic Internet address system, known as the Domain Name System, is vulnerable and will almost certainly be exploited by criminals.

09.08.2008Microsoft Helps Protect Consumers by Tackling Illegal Software Sales
As part of its ongoing commitment to protect customers and partners, Microsoft Corp. today announced legal actions against eight software dealers in
the United States, Canada, Egypt and the Netherlands that are alleged to have engaged in the illegal sale of unlicensed Microsoft software and
software components. These actions were in response to hundreds of reports to the Microsoft anti-piracy hotline (800) RU-LEGIT (785-3448) from
customers who were concerned they had been sold software they were not licensed to use.

06.05.2008Microsoft expected to rebrand Live.com to Kumo.com
Microsoft intends to rebrand its Live Search service as Kumo next year, according to a TechCrunch report that cited a source within the company.
Apparently, the software giant acquired the kumo.com domain name last week and since then has been busy snapping up all the other variants such as
.net, .jp, .fr, .ru and so on. Also being reported as a sign that Microsoft is taking measures to boost its search engine is the fact that it has
recently hired Sean Suchter, currently Yahoo's vice president of search technology. Despite Microsoft's recent efforts to encourage Live.com
usage, which include actually paying users, their service seems to have reached a dead end and hasn't grown in the past few months.

25.11.2008Russian Firefox drops Google for Yandex
Although Google has been the default search engine on popular web-browser Firefox's search bar (located right next to the address bar) for as long
as many can remember, Russian users will soon find a new face taking Google's place: Yandex. According to Mozilla General Counsel Harvey Anderson,
Russian-localized versions of Firefox 3.1 will have Google rival Yandex as their default search engine, with Google moving to the number 2 spot on the
list. According to Mr. Anderson, "Russian users really wanted direct access to the Yandex search services in official Firefox RU builds." This
move marks the beginning of a new partnership between Yandex and Mozilla, one that almost certainly involves ad revenue sharing.

11.01.2009Welcome to 2007: "Simulated Benchmarks"
Last April, benchmarks of AMDs
Barcelona running at 2.6 GHz
made rounds across Internet
tech sites. These benchmarks,
according to AMD, provided a
21% performance gain over
quad-core Xeon 5355 in
SPECint_rate2006 and a 50%
gain in performance over Xeon
5355 in SPECfp_rate2006.
This looks pretty
phenomenal until you read the
footnote courtesy of AMD:
"Estimated performance @
2.6GHz based on internal AMD
simulations."
Much
to my surprise, these
benchmarks
surfaced
again over the last few
days. This time, however, the
author did not tell you the
benchmarks were simulated and
at least four months old. He
did not tell you that the
benchmarks ran were
presented
to him on a PowerPoint
document, and he did not
tell you the numbers featured
in his "review" were of a
2.6 GHz simulated chip instead
of a 2.3 GHz simulated chip...

07.11.2007Microsoft said seeking partners for new Yahoo bid
In the ever-rotating, but never stopping merry-go-round that is Microhoogle, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday night that Microsoft has
been
looking for
partners in recent days that would help it make a new bid for Yahoo's search business.
The newspaper, suggests though, that
because Microsoft canceled a scheduled meeting with Chairman Roy Bostock on Monday, that perhaps it is not finding any willing compatriots for a Yahoo
move.
The paper also reports that Microsoft has met with Carl Icahn in recent days, urging the billionaire to keep pressing his
proxy fight in an effort to motivate Yahoo's board.

02.07.2008First Russian BitTorrent User Sentenced
With rampant piracy across much of Russia, one could be forgiven for thinking they don’t care about copyright there. That assertion is now up
for debate as the first BitTorrent user in Russia is sentenced for illegally distributing software, with anti-copyright activists calling for people
to jump on a torrent in protest. According to a report from rusya.ru, a man has made history by becoming the first person in Russia to be convicted
for using BitTorrent to infringe copyright. Sergei Avramov appeared in court in the city of Rostov-on-Don, accused of the illegal distribution of
pirated software. Despite his actions being strictly not-for-profit, he was found guilty and received a 12 month suspended sentence.

01.12.2008Microsoft Plans Data Center in Siberia
Microsoft has announced plans to build a data center in Irkutsk, one of the largest cities in Siberia. The facility will be able to hold 10,000
servers, according to Birger Steen, the head of Microsoft's Russian and CIS business unit. The company's plans were outlined in a press briefing
Friday and reported by Russian news outlets
Kommersant and
Cnews.
The project appears to be
smaller in scope than recently announced Microsoft data center projects in
Dublin,
Ireland and the
Chicago area, and no budget was announced (although some Russian media sources cited the $500 million number for the other
projects). No specific site has been selected yet, but Microsoft is said to be considering locations in between
Irkutsk and Angarsk, two cities north of Lake Baikal in southern Siberia.

26.11.2007Rumor: More iPhone rumors to surface between now and later?
Tom Krazit: I guess the thinking is if you toss enough possibilities in the air, at least one of them will come down right.
For
example this Sunday morning,
the Internet suggests that Apple's
new iPhone
might be cheaper. That it
might be thinner. That it
might have video chat.
That it
might
have GPS. That it might come
with a four-core chip. That it
might be late. That it
might be

08.06.2008Microsoft Officially Opens @live.com Email Registration
Microsoft has officially opened the much anticipated and well overdue registration for the new @live.com email addresses. This minor update along with
the rest of wave 2 of Microsoft’s Windows Live Suite allows users to now fully take advantage of Windows Live. Microsoft should have opened
registration to the @live.com acronym when the company first started Windows Live, but nonetheless this is a welcome change. The company now gives
users a change and the ability to get away from the old "Hotmail" acronym and finally puts their email service in-line with the rest of the
Windows Live Suite.

RivaTuner is the most powerful
tweaking utility for NVIDIA
and ATI display adapters
running under Windows 98 /
Windows 98 SE / Windows ME /
Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
The purpose of this utility is
to give you access to all the
undocumented features of
Detonator and Catalyst
drivers. Drivers have a lot of
undocumented registry entries.
Some of them don't affect
anything, but there are some
that are very useful. In
general, they cannot give you
big performance boost but they
can improve image quality and
solve some compatibility
problems. RivaTuner will help
you to change all undocumented
registry entries. It supports
all versions of Detonators
(now called ForceWare) drivers
under Windows 98 / Windows 98

26.12.2006Most of us may Google it; But Russians 'Yandex' it !
In most parts of the world you might "Google" for the answer, a Chinese may"Baidu" it;. But a Russian would more likely "Yandex" it !
Yandex ( Russian: Я́ндекс ) is a Russian search engine and one of the largest Russian Web portals. Yandex
was
launched in 1997. Its name can be explained as "Yet Another iNDEXer" (
yandex ) or "Языково́й (language) Index". The Russian word "Я" corresponds to English
"I" (as the singular first-person pronoun), making "Яndex" a bilingual pun on "Index".
Few outside of Russia have heard of
the Yandex search engine, but that may soon change. Yandex has 44% of the Russian market—10 points ahead of Google—and is now the No. 2
search outfit in Europe, according to researcher comScore.
Yandex is expected to list its
shares on Nasdaq this fall, fetching as much as $2 billion. That would be Russia's largest-ever initial public offering in tech, valuing the
company at around $5 billion. Although Yandex declined to comment about the listing, analysts and investors are expecting a blockbuster. "This
IPO should be very popular," especially among investors eager to tap into Russia's Internet market, says Konstantin Belov, an analyst at Uralsib,
a Moscow bank.
