Windows Live Messenger v8.0.0562 was released exclusively to selected Beta-testers earlier this month. Fortunately for WLM users (including invitees) a new build very similar to 0562 is now imminent.

It could've been released already, if it wasn't for weather-inflicted damage to many offices in Redmond last weekend. So, if you're currently using Windows Live Messenger 8.0.0365, expect an auto-update prompt in one of the next couple of days.

Win7 Boosting Support for SSDs

People who are both "on-the-go" and people who don't move around a lot thrive on fast, small, efficient computers, such as netbooks.

Microsoft will be addressing this need at WinHEC later this week, hopefully helping a lot of netbook and UMP users, as well as moving Solid-State drives into a whole new class of operation.

According to CNET, Windows 7 will be able to take advantage of some updated features in command sets such as ATA, and identify SSDs uniquely, taking advantage of some of the features they offer separate from standard hard drives.

Keep reading by following the "Read More" link below...

Finally, after years of NTFS fragmentation complaints, we may be on our way to a solution; a couple of topics in the conference are titled "file system optimizations" and "thoughts on the future of SSDs and their role in Windows".

To help boost the production of these new flash storage-based computers, they will also introduce an updated version of the of the "Flash-Based PC Design Guide" that covers how to optimize the design to take advantage of 7's features.

With all ends of the computing spectrum moving into the future quickly, HDDs have been a bit slow to advance. We'll be moving into a new era when these SSDs gain the speed and storage that we know today in standard hard drives. Microsoft is helping that happen.

WinHEC - Windows 7 Server Keynote

After weeks of talk of Windows 7, the server version of Win7 has gotten some attention at today's WinHEC keynote.

After pointing out that they had to forklift their "toys" onto the stage today, unlike the netbooks yesterday, Vice President Bill Laing got into a few details about what Windows 7 Server (also currently known as Windows Server 2008 R2) entails.

Support for up to 256 processors has been confirmed, as well as that it will only be shipped in x64.

This version, unlike the consumer counterpart, will be a "minor release".

The on-demand link to the keynote is not available yet, but when it is, I'll update this article.

How to identify a buggy device driver on Windows Vista

If your computer is acting unpredictably, locking up, and encountering blue screens of death, then youre most likely the victim of a faulty driver. The Driver Verifier Manager (DFV) is a great tool for troubleshooting driver problems by identifying the troubling driver. Although DFV does not actually fix the driver, it still is a really useful tool because it helps you identify the troubling driver so you can choose to delete or update the driver.

Before you attempt to use this tool, please be sure that your are really having driver problems. The tool will prevent your computer from starting by identifying the troubling driver. I say this only because it may be a lengthy process for you but if you are having troubles, it will definitely be worth it.

Ads that watch you back

Yahoo is reporting that whenever you happen to be looking at an ad in the subway, on the way to work, or even at the mall, there is an increasing chance that the ad could be looking right back at you. Recently, advertisers have began to hide small cameras, either embedded in the ad itself or around the ad, that identify people who are looking at it. This means that the ad can change accordingly to the viewer, taking 'personalized ads' to an entire new level. As it stands at the moment, the ads cannot currently identify people individually, Minority Report-style, but recognizes "outward appearances".

Windows 7 On Track For 2010 Release

That's the year we'll make contact, and not before.

Chris Flores, the head of Microsoft Featured Communities confirmed to Neowin by stating "As most of you are well aware, there has been quite a bit of recent speculation about Win7. While I am not at liberty to discuss the details of Win7 (yet) I do want to set the record straight that we are still shooting for 2010 - 3 years from the launch of Vista."

Bearing in mind that 2010 is just a little under a year and a half away, it's unreasonable to think that something would be released in between; however we can speculate that SP2 for Windows Vista will come before then and may introduce some new features making the upgrade from XP worthwhile. Pure speculation of course!
