11.06.2008Top ten dumbest things I've seen or done in the workplace
In
twenty-something years in high-tech, I've witnessed and done some
really stupid things. I'm talking about things that were embarrassing, unethical, incompetent, or just plain dumb. This kind of stuff can get you
fired, sued, or even arrested, and worst case, can cause the demise of a company.
Keep in mind, some of this stuff is politically
incorrect, racy, or even illegal, which is precisely why it's so dumb. So if you get offended by that sort of thing, be forewarned. Also, some of
them didn't exactly happen "in the workplace," but after hours with coworkers. Close enough.

10.12.2007Forrester: IBM, Microsoft to dominate 'information workplace'
IBM and
Microsoft are poised to dominate the
collaboration technology market for providing applications to the future workplace, says a new
report by
Forrester Research. But that doesn't mean small
vendors in the Web 2.0 space, or a little company called
Google, won't have a prominent role as well.
Forrester's vision for the future office is the
"information workplace," a 21st century platform that manages content, messaging,
team collaboration, real-time collaboration, and communication
among employees using a common platform.

07.04.2008The RIAA Attacks Usenet
Basking in glory after orchestrating a record punishment for a petty file-sharer in the US, the RIAA takes its legal campaign to the next level. Many
may want newsgroups to stay under the radar but its too late - major labels have filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Usenet.com and it wont
be going away.
In an ideal world, people would not talk about Usenet. In an ideal world there would be no such things as
copyright infringement lawsuits. Sadly, we do not live in an ideal world.
Today we simply have to talk about Usenet and we have
to talk about lawsuits.
Major record labels - Arista, Atlantic, BMG, Capitol, Caroline, Elektra, Interscope, LaFace, Maverick,
Sony BMG, UMG, Virgin, Warner Bros. and Zomba have filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against
Usenet.com.

Decrying stasis in the laptop industry, InfoWorld's Tom Yager and crew have designed
their ideal laptop for 2009 given the components are available
currently. The project was subjected to the same limitations manufacturers face when whiteboarding a new notebook and introduced only those components
that would increase end-user productivity manyfold. The resulting AMD Puma-based
WorldBook Ether and
WorldBook Meteor include an 'Embedded Smartphone'
system-in-system ARM microcontroller, flash-memory overlay for fast boot, and ATI/AMD Hybrid Graphics for power-saving switched mode.

The 8 most dangerous consumer technologies
High-tech consumer products and services of all kinds are making their way into the workplace. They include everything from smart phones,
voice-over-IP systems and flash memory sticks to virtual online worlds. And as people grow more accustomed to having their own personal technology at
their beck and call -- and in fact can't imagine functioning without it -- the line between what they use for work and what they use for recreation
is blurring.
In a recent Yankee Group Research
Inc. survey of corporate users, 86% of the respondents said they had used at least one consumer technology in the workplace, for purposes related
to both innovation and productivity.
Unfortunately, this trend poses problems for IT organizations. For one thing, the use of
these technologies increases the risk of security breaches. Moreover, users expect IT to support these devices and services, especially once they
interact with applications in the corporate environment.

"Google is a bummer of a place to work at" says internal Microsoft email
An interesting view inside
Google as a workplace has
surfaced on the net. This
could be either a look at the
actual reality of Google or
just a desperate attempt by
Microsoft HR to boost employee
morales and keep its employees
within the fortress that is
Redmond. Either that or a
prankster who hates both
companies just as much.
"The following has
been making the rounds on just
about every internal email
list I belong to in Microsoft.
Here it is to share a little
insight with the rest of the
world. Microsoft is an
amazingly transparent company.
Google is not. Any peek is a
good peek."
An
anonymous Microsoft employee
has
posted on a fresh
Wordpress.com blog of what
appears to be the full
contents of an email
circulating Microsofts
internal mailing lists.
Patriotically enough, he or
she wanted to share this with
the rest of the world just to
show what a great workplace
Microsoft is and Google is
not.
