Core i7 on a budget: MSI X58 Pro-E review

Perhaps the biggest problem we saw with initial Intel X58 motherboards was their substantial price. Add to that the serious price premium for DDR3 memory, and you ended up with a relatively affordable and fast Core i7 920 processor that nevertheless needed to run on an expensive platform. The recent drop in DDR3 pricing got us thinking about the affordability of the Core i7 platform, and we began to wonder just how cheap users could build one of these systems. MSI has quietly been preparing an army of Core i7 motherboards, now with five unique models on offer, we feel they may have what we're after.

The Ultimate Intel Core i7 Memory Performance Guide

Today we are going to look at how various memory frequencies, timings, and configurations influence the memory bandwidth and the real-world performance of Core i7 processors. This is particularly important to not only help you get the most out of your Core i7 CPU, but to potentially save you a lot of money. After all, it is possible to configure a Core i7 processor with triple-channel memory operating at 1066, 1333 and 1600MHz, or even faster. But what are the benefits of using more aggressively clocked memory? With the new Core i7 platform, DDR3 should finally get its chance to shine. As noted before, the Core i7 features an on-die memory controller with support for triple-channel DDR3 memory.

The motherboard choice is not as obvious, even though a single chipset is being used across the board. The Intel X58 is what drives all Core i7 motherboards today and for the most part you will have to pay dearly for it. Today we will be checking out the DFI LANParty UT X58-T3eH8 and the LANParty JR X58-T3H6 motherboards. DFI aims at the enthusiast and gamers market with two X58-based LANParty motherboards.

Intel Core i7 hits the streets on Monday

This Monday Intel is scheduled to release its next generation processor, the Intel Core i7. While we have long since moved away from names like Pentium 4 and such it seems, there seems to be a great deal of excitement for Intel's new chip. Early benchmarks show a pretty significant performance improvement over the previous generation. With 4 cores each with 2 hyper-threads and the memory controller now on the die, the Core i7 seems poised to offer some substantial real-world improvement. Here's a round up of some of the reviews we've seen: View: OSNews Core i7 coverage View: ExtremeTech first look View: Engadget review round-up

Review: Intel Core i7 'Nehalem' processor and X58 chipset

In appearance, the new Intel Core i7 - based on the 'Nehalem' microarchitecture - looks like a bigger, chunkier version of the Core 2 Quad but under the heat spreader and casing it has a radical design that breaks new ground.

New ground, that is, for Intel, but Core i7 seems to have rather a lot in common with AMD's Phenom microprocessor. Both CPUs have four cores on a single die, unlike the pair of dual-core CPUs you’ll find inside a Core 2 Quad. Both have the memory controller integrated inside the processor.
intel Core i7 logo intel Core i7 logo

In addition, Core i7 has ditched the frontside bus and moved to the QuickPath Interface (QPI), which bears a strong resemblance to the HyperTransport bus AMD uses. QPI is the new name for Intel's erstwhile HyperTransport rival, Common System Interface (CSI).

Intel to phase out Core i7 940 and 965 Extreme

This may come as a surprise to some, but reports state that Intel is looking to phase out its Core i7 940 and 965 extreme processors, just barely 6 months after their release. The Core i7 940 and 965 Extreme CPUs, which are based on Intel's new Nehalem microarchitecture and have a clock rate of 2.93 Ghz and 3.2 Ghz respectively, will be officially "unavailable" after September 4th, 2009. Image from MAXIMUMPC. Intel has not revealed any reasons for stopping the production of the 2 out of their only 3 desktop Nehalem based processors. Reports suggest that Intel may be making way for their successors, the rumored Core i7 950 3.06 Ghz and 975 Extreme 3.33 Ghz CPUs.

Intel Core i7 For Laptops First Benchmarks

PC Pro has benchmarked the first Intel Core i7 processors for laptops. The chips mark the debut of Intel's Turbo Boost technology, which ramps up the speed of the working cores if two or more cores are sitting unused. For the quad-core i7-820QM, this can take the stock speed of 1.73GHz up to a maximum of 3.06GHz. The 2D benchmarks show comparable performance to Core 2 Extreme chips running at 2.53GHz. Power consumption and processor temperature is dramatically lower, which should lead to significant improvements in laptop battery life.

Intel Core i7 920, 940 and 965 Extreme Edition review

Today we will be introducing you to three new Core i7 processors based on the new Intel Nehalem microarchitecture, each featuring 4-cores and operating in the 2.66 to 3.20GHz range. Like the Core 2 family, these new processors feature model numbers, designed to keep things simple.

The Core i7 965 Extreme Edition runs at 3.20GHz and features a QPI (QuickPath Interface) throughput of 6.4GT/s, which is the key difference here. The mainstream versions of the processor include the Core i7 920 and 940, clocked at 2.66GHz and 2.93GHz, respectively. These more affordable processors feature a QPI throughput of just 4.8GT/s, so it will be interesting to discover what kind of impact this has on performance.

More AMD Deneb details leaked to spoil the Core i7 party?

As many of you have already seen Intel Core i7 reviews have hit the web, and most reviews have given the Core i7 the thumbs up. Benchmarks puts the i7 inbetween the Core 2 Quad Extreme series and the SkullTrail Gaming platform. This is an impressive feat for Intel, giving the customer a good excuse to upgrade their system just before Xmas.

So what’s AMD going to do to fight the Core i7?
This is where Deneb comes in. Deneb is AMD’s 45nm quad core competitor. Deneb is the replacement for the currently underperforming Phenom. Although AMD managed a great technical feat with the Phenom managing to create a true quad core cpu Intel’s 2xdual core design still beat it on outright performance.

This month AMD will release its first “Deneb” Phenom CPU’s:
Phenom X4 20550 @ 3.0 Ghz
Phenom 20350 @ 2.8 Ghz
It’s not known yet how well the new cpu’s will perform or their exact specification, but it is known that they will be compatible with current AM2+ motherboards with a bios update, so unlike the Core i7 a motherboard upgrade will not be required.

Its also expected that AMD will bring back its “FX” enthusiast line of CPU’s in 2009 using the AM3 socket.

Nehalem to become Core i7 processor

Intel's Nehalem processor architecture will still hold to the Core naming scheme when it appears late this year, if an apparent leak of company logos proves authentic. Although the platform will make fundamental changes, Nehalem will reportedly be known as Core i7 for at least all its desktop variants, which will include dual- and quad-core mainstream processors as well as a 3.2GHz Extreme processor for high-end gaming desktops.

The reason for the change is unclear, though Intel will have an increasing number of cores with the new architecture and so will have a harder time maintaining a simple naming scheme for its processors as for Core 2, which has been split into Solo, Duo, and Quad variants. The i7 refers to Nehalem as the seventh x86 platform generation to come from Intel.

The alleged slip doesn't indicate whether the naming will apply to mobile processors, although these in recent years have kept the same name as their desktop counterparts. Workstation- and server-class processors have usually kept to the Xeon naming system.
