Is Michael Dell The Devil?

Is Dell CEO Michael Dell, who is wooing solution providers with a nascent channel program and at the same time launching a managed services offensive, devil or angel?

That was the question ConnectWise CEO Arnie Bellini took head on at the kickoff Friday of the third annual ConnectWise Partner summit. To dramatize just how he views the Dell threat, Bellini showed a slide of a CRN Cover story titled "Dell Hits The Wall" and drew devil horns and a devil goatee on the magazine photo of Dell CEO Michael Dell.

"I respect Michael Dell," said Bellini before a packed Tampa Marriott ballroom of 600 ConnectWise software and solution provider partners, many of whom hooted and roared with laughter at the Dell Devil likeness. "He is an aggressive, capitalististic entrepreneur. That is what we are dealing with though. It is not his fault. If we don't take control of our marketplace it is going to be our fault."

Michael Dell: Vista will win out in two years

Despite research that found Vista uptake among businesses is slowing, Michael Dell has predicted that most companies will migrate to the OS within two years.

Dell's chief executive has predicted that most of his company's business customers will migrate to Vista by 2009.

Speaking to journalists at Gartner's ITxpo Symposium in Orlando, Florida last week, Michael Dell said: "We have a number who have gone to Vista, and almost all are planning to go to Vista: some in 2008, and some in 2009. As they take on new IT deployments with new hardware features, Vista will be much better supported."

However, Dell's assertions run contrary to research published earlier in October by market research company Context, which found that Vista sales for business machines were slowing.

Microsoft's Michael Howard: Security must be a part of every application

Security needs to become a way of life in application development, Microsoft's Michael Howard says. In this Q&A he explains how you need to use tools and educate people to make sure your applications aren't weak links.

Do you have a sense of where developers are in their original natural state in terms of security?

Michael Howard: There are two major buckets on the whole. On the whole, developers in the industry need a bit of help. The actual level of security expertise in the marketplace is abysmally low. I was talking with some academics recently about this -- we were hiring really bright people out of school, and basically they don't know how to build secure software. And it's really scary. With that said, we recognise that's why we have the SDL process. It is really an education. We have to fill that gap.

Microsoft virtualisation: free, as in beer

Virtualisation in all shapes and sizes is definitely a hot topic at this years Tech.Ed.

I've already gone into quite a bit of depth on application virtualisation with SoftGrid, but what about Microsoft's plans for OS virtualisation -- Virtual PC and Virtual Server? Why should anyone care, when VMWare has perfected this market over the years?

Well, first of all, I'll just point out that the Microsoft stuff is free. And that's as good a reason as any to pay attention to it!

I caught up with Microsoft Australia's Michael Kleef and Andrew Dugdell to talk about virtualisation. Michael is a technology evangelist with Microsoft and Dugdell is a MVP (Most Valuable Professional) for virtualisation.

Michael Phelps is not the only one breaking records and winning gold at the Olympics in Beijing.

If Microsoft's Silverlight continues to have the success it has had in streaming video coverage of the Olympic Games around the world, it could mean gold for Microsoft as the software giant continues its competition with Adobe and that company's ubiquitous Flash technology.
