Dell "Mini Inspiron" aims to take on EeePC

Gizmodo Bumped into Michael Dell at all things digital and scooped a world exclusive.

It's a small form factor notebook, just like the Asus Eee and the HP 2133. Michael Dell wouldn't tell Gizmodo what OS it's running, or the pricing, but that it's a low-cost notebook meant for developing countries. From the pictures posted up you can see three USB ports, a card reader and VGA out. Many in the industry refer to laptops like the HP 2133 and Asus Eee as "netbooks" aimed at the developing world and general consumers.

Dell has not released pricing or specifications for this new notebook.

Over at the official Dell blog there are some official pictures to backup Gizmodo's story and it seems Dell may be releasing official specifications very soon. Stay tuned.

HP's 2133: A Tiny Laptop an Adult Can Really Use

HP today entered the affordable mini-notebook category with its eye-catching HP 2133.

HP is betting that, for a few dollars more, you'll want to invest in its slightly more mature approach...

Hewlett-Packard has told customers not to install Windows XP service pack three (SP3) on AMD-based desktops until Microsoft and HP cough fixes to the endless reboot snafu that has wreaked havoc on PCs. "HP is working diligently with Microsoft on a software update and will be proactively distributing a patch this week through HP Update that will prevent this error from occurring," said the computer giant in a statement. "HP recommends consumers with AMD-based desktops wait until after HP's or Microsoft's updates have been deployed on their systems to install Service Pack 3."

Apple, please stop 'thinking different'

When Apple unveiled its latest Macbook and Macbook Pro the world rejoiced. Steve Jobs and his gang at Apple are excellent at product presentation and sales. One thing that was somewhat overlooked at the launch was the inclusion on of mini-DisplayPort. It sounds great but where did Apple get this DisplayPort mini idea from? It seems as if they came up with the idea to design, fabricate and now push the small form factor display port themselves. It's also astonishing because mini-DisplayPort is following in the foot trails of mini-VGA and mini-DVI which all were wildly adopted?

Mini-Notebooks Compete on Size, Speed and Price

When Intel announced the availability of its low-power chip, the Atom, at Computex in Taiwan this week, it signaled that the age of the cheap mini-notebook had finally arrived.

Not bad for a product category that no one cared about six months ago.

Since its October 2007 introduction, Asus' small, low-cost Eee PC has become a sleeper success, selling more than a million units, according to its manufacturer. That success has prompted other manufacturers to announce their own mini-notebooks, including such mainstream PC manufacturers as HP, Dell and Acer. Intel also has proposed a standard for low-cost ultralights that it is calling "netbooks."

HP could be violating US trade restrictions with Iran

HP has recently come under fire from the Boston Globe, who have reported that Redington Gulf, a third-party based in Dubai has been selling HP printers in Iran for 11 years, since 1997. HP has partnered with them, but if the partnership began with knowledge that printers will be sold in Iran by Redington Gulf, HP could face trade sanctions, as the US currently prohibits exports to Iran. HP claims that it fully complies with US export laws, but further investigation yielded conflicting answers. In the late 1990s, before the partnership began, an HP executive had talked about sales in Iran and HP's desire to be in the market.
