Microsoft Close to URGE Deal in Europe

In May Microsoft launches its belated entry into the world of digital music sales in the US by teaming up with MTV to launch URGE - a service that integrates digital music sales directly into Windows Media Player 11 .

URGE partners Microsoft's technology with MTV's brand profile in the music industry in order to present a challenge to the dominance of iTunes in the digital music download market.

Now, according to industry sources, Microsoft is closing in on a partnership that will see the launch of a digital music download service in the UK - but with a difference. I have been informed that Microsoft is in final discussions not only with content providers such MTV but also with a number of major British telecommunications companies.

Whereas Microsoft's partnership with MTV is mainly designed to deliver brand and marketing value, a partnership with a telco could potentially secure the Microsoft a valuable additional channel of delivery.

More Details on URGE's Launch this Week!

With Microsoft to release the first beta for Windows Media Player 11, due tomorrow (or today, depending on the time zone), its URGE service, co-developed with MTV, is also due to be officially released at the same time.

Thanks to MTV's collaboration, URGE has great chances to be able to compete efficiently with Apple and it's blockbuster iTunes. Its imminent launch prices should be as following:

-Monthly subscriptions without any download limit might be priced at 9,95 USD
-Same monthly subscriptions as above, along with the rights to copy the tracks on compatible devices will cost 14,95 USD
-Single songs will cost 99 cents, just like its competitor

There's no obvious difference between single songs buying and subscriptions, except that subscriptions are unlimited and that if the subscription ends, the song will no longer be usable. The service will be launched along with a media device which will play the same role to URGE as the iPod is to iTunes.

How to uninstall VS 2008 Beta 2 before installing the final version of VS 2008

Buck Hodges: There have been a few questions about how to correctly uninstall all of VS 2008 Beta 2 in order to install the final version of VS 2008. Scott Guthrie posted the steps for doing this earlier today. A subset of this list would apply if you have installed Team Foundation Team Explorer 2008 Beta 2, rather than the full VS 2008 with Team Explorer.

At the end he recommends rebooting after removing everything and before installing VS 2008. From my experience, that's good advice. The only thing additionally I've typically done after uninstalling a non-RTM build is to delete the VS 9.0 registry hives (HKLM and HKCU) and the VS 9.0 directory under "Program Files." Of course, there are no guarantees with this, editing the registry may render your machine nonfunctional, etc., so be careful and back up your data.

Something New when Uninstalling Drivers and Devices on Windows Vista

Chris Mu: Today, I'd like to share a background story about a KB article that describe a interesting behavior in Windows Vista that is different with previous OS. Maybe it is not the most important or highest impacted issue occurs in Windows Vista, but I think it will impact some of you when you are troubleshooting for your firendes/family... OK, let go through this issue.

This issue is about re-install network adapter in Windows Vista and the KB article for this issue will be KB945399 and published in a few days. The issue can be reproduced in many computer models and you will encounter it when you uninstall a network adapter device using Device Manager. Maybe you have to troubleshoot whether the network adapter driver installed is right to troubleshoot OS network issue. Therefore, after uninstall the adapter, you may try to install another driver for the device ... Everything works fine in Windows XP/Server 2003 and so on. However, when you try to do same action in Windows Vista, the popular OS nowadays, you will see soon after the uninstall process completes, PnP detects the network adapter as a new device and automatically installs the device and drivers. Instead, in Windows XP, only after you click to scan hardware change, the PnP will detect the network adapter and install the driver.
