Microsoft Update now works with IE7

When Internet Explorer 7 Beta released to testers it left testers with a broken Windows Update that wouldn't load properly, disabling the ability to update Windows with critical patches that have been released since the end of July. This seems to of been fixed and on my PC it even redirects to Microsoft Update before my chosen homepage is loaded.

Something New when Uninstalling Drivers and Devices on Windows Vista

Chris Mu: Today, I'd like to share a background story about a KB article that describe a interesting behavior in Windows Vista that is different with previous OS. Maybe it is not the most important or highest impacted issue occurs in Windows Vista, but I think it will impact some of you when you are troubleshooting for your firendes/family... OK, let go through this issue.

This issue is about re-install network adapter in Windows Vista and the KB article for this issue will be KB945399 and published in a few days. The issue can be reproduced in many computer models and you will encounter it when you uninstall a network adapter device using Device Manager. Maybe you have to troubleshoot whether the network adapter driver installed is right to troubleshoot OS network issue. Therefore, after uninstall the adapter, you may try to install another driver for the device ... Everything works fine in Windows XP/Server 2003 and so on. However, when you try to do same action in Windows Vista, the popular OS nowadays, you will see soon after the uninstall process completes, PnP detects the network adapter as a new device and automatically installs the device and drivers. Instead, in Windows XP, only after you click to scan hardware change, the PnP will detect the network adapter and install the driver.

Microsoft to test ad-supported version of Works

Microsoft Corp. said on Wednesday it will offer a free, advertising-supported version of its basic productivity software, Microsoft Works, as part of a test program with computers manufacturers.

The world's largest software maker has been pondering the future of Microsoft Works, its basic spreadsheet and word processing software, in the face of rising competition from Google Inc.'s suite of business software services.

When a user connects to the Internet while using Works, that cache of ads will refresh, said Melissa Stern, a Microsoft senior product manager in the Office group...

How to uninstall VS 2008 Beta 2 before installing the final version of VS 2008

Buck Hodges: There have been a few questions about how to correctly uninstall all of VS 2008 Beta 2 in order to install the final version of VS 2008. Scott Guthrie posted the steps for doing this earlier today. A subset of this list would apply if you have installed Team Foundation Team Explorer 2008 Beta 2, rather than the full VS 2008 with Team Explorer.

At the end he recommends rebooting after removing everything and before installing VS 2008. From my experience, that's good advice. The only thing additionally I've typically done after uninstalling a non-RTM build is to delete the VS 9.0 registry hives (HKLM and HKCU) and the VS 9.0 directory under "Program Files." Of course, there are no guarantees with this, editing the registry may render your machine nonfunctional, etc., so be careful and back up your data.

Works 9.0 to come in both free and paid flavors

Heres a nice find by the folks over at Clubic.com: The Web-order form for Works 9.0.

Microsoft is still planning to offer a paid version of the next version of its consumer/home-office productivity suite. It will cost $39.95 at retail about $10 per copy less than Works 8.0.

Theres still no link or mention of the free, ad-funded version of the next version of Microsoft Works, which Satya Nadella, the head of Microsofts search and ad platform unit, said that Microsoft had released as of late last week.

I wonder if the ad-funded version of Works 9 will debut as a service, instead of software. Such an offering would make Works 9 more of a real competitor to Google Docs & Spreadsheets, in my opinion, than would a fat-client offering.

Microsoft still isnt providing any more specifics. Stay tuned.

Microsoft Works to become a free, ad-funded product

Microsofts next version of its small-business/home productivity suite, due imminently, will be free and ad-funded.

Microsoft Works 9.0 which will be the new products name, if Microsoft opts to stick with its current nomenclature might also debut at some point as Microsoft-hosted low-end productivity service, as many have been speculating. A hosted version of Works would give Microsoft a head-to-head competitor with Google Docs & Spreadsheets and other consumer- and small-business focused services, analysts have said.

For the time being, however, the new version of Works will be ad-funded, according to Satya Nadella, the newly minted Corporate Vice President of Microsofts Search & Advertising Platform Group. Nadella told me during an interview on July 27 that Microsoft recently released the new ad-funded version of Microsoft Works.

Attack code posted for Microsoft Works bug

Just one day after Microsoft issued a massive set of security patches for its software, hackers have begun posting code showing how to exploit one of the flaws.

The proof-of-concept code, posted Wednesday to the Milw0rm Web site, exploits a bug in the Microsoft Works file converter software that is part of Office 2003 and can be used to run unauthorized software on a victim's computer.

The flaw also affects Works 8 and Works Suite 2005. To fall prey to the attack, a victim would first have to open a malicious Works attachment.

How Google Earth Really Works

Don't miss this article if youre at all curious about how Google Earth works on a technical level how data measured in terabytes and terapixels get sent over a relatively straitened Internet connection and processed by a relatively limited home computer.

The article is by by Avi Bar Zeev, one of the early developers of the program (when it was still Keyhole Viewer):

After reading an article called "How Google Earth Works" on the generally great site HowStuffWorks.com, it became apparent that the article was more of a "how cool it is" and "heres how to use it" than a "how Google Earth works."

So I thought there might be some interest, and despite some valid intellectual property concerns, here we are, with "part one" of explaining how at least part of Google Earth works.

Microsoft quietly offering ad-funded Works

After years of exploring the matter, Microsoft has finally started offering an ad-funded version of Microsoft Works in some countries.

Users who run the software see a small ad as they are writing their document or editing their spreadsheet. Although the program has the ability to update its set of ads online, today it runs mostly ads for Microsoft and a few partners, all of which ship with the product itself.

Works SE (which stands for Sponsored Edition) is free to PC makers, though they don't get a cut of the ad revenue. Large computer makers typically only pay a buck or two for the low-end version of Works, though.
