Boxed copies of Money Plus to stop being sold

Microsoft has decided against releasing a 2009 version of Money Plus, its personal-finance-management software. The company also is planning to discontinue selling Money Plus as a boxed software product at retail but insisted the move shouldn't be interpreted as an immediate move away from shrink-wrapped PC software.

Microsoft had been releasing each year a new version of its Money Plus product. A new version was due out this fall, in fact. But according to a blog posting on August 6 to the public Microsoft Money forum by Most Valuable Professional Bob Peel, Microsoft feels annual updates with only incremental improvements are no longer needed.

Steal This Film 2 hits File Sharing Networks

Steal This Film 1, which was downloaded nearly 3 million times, has now been succeeded officially (as the sequel premiered and was ironically leaked last month) by none other than Steal This Film 2. By producing this video, the League of Noble Peers, which features many prominent individuals from the BitTorrent community, has the goal of “ bringing new people into the leagues of those now prepared to think 'after intellectual property', think creatively about the future of distribution, production and creativity .” For those still confused, Steal This Film is a series documenting the movement against intellectual property. The films discuss piracy culture as well as raids against file sharing websites. In the spirit of piracy, the movie is completely free for download.

ASUS Eee PC 900 reviewed: 'staggering' value for money

ASUS' original Eee might have impressed many with its super-budget price tag, but the relatively small 7-inch screen dissuaded others from considering it as a "proper" laptop. While the new Eee PC 900 might only have 1.9-inches more, it means the ultraportable now musters 1,024 x 600 resolution; UK site Trusted Reviews took a first-look at the 900 and found that the extra pixels - among other things - are enough to make the laptop into a true contender. Not as slick as a MacBook Air or Sony TZ, perhaps, but a fraction of the price.

Microsoft says college students can 'steal' Office

For college students who want Office 2007, but don't want to pay Microsoft a fortune, the software maker is offering another option: Steal it. Well, actually Microsoft isn't encouraging piracy. Rather it is launching a promotion, dubbed "Ultimate Steal," in which college students can get the ultra high-end Ultimate edition of Office for just $60.

The promotion runs through April 30 and starts Wednesday in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. It launches next week in France, Italy and Spain. To be eligible, Microsoft said students have to be "actively enrolled" in a higher education program and have an e-mail address from that school.

"We're listening to students who have told us they need Microsoft Office for their studies and want more flexible ways to get the latest version," Alan Yates, general manager of Worldwide Education at Microsoft, said in a statement. "The Ultimate Steal is the latest in a long history of providing compelling academic offers for students."

New bill lets colleges use federal funds to fight P2P

Representative Ric Keller feels that colleges in America are places where students learn to steal " billions of dollars in intellectual property from hardworking people whose jobs hang in the balance " and his new bill (HR 1689) could give schools more money to combat P2P. The bill, called the "Curb Illegal Downloading on College Campuses Act of 2007," amends the Higher Education Act, a bill that supplies federal money to universities for bandwidth costs and to keep networks more secure, allowing that money (note: not any additional funding is being requested) to be used to combat illegal downloading of copyrighted content. The bill notes that " computer systems at colleges and universities are intended primarily to aid in educating and increase research capability among students and faculty ."

There's no guarantee that the bill will make it to a vote, but even if it makes it through all the political obstacles, it isn't clear if schools would be interested in using a limited pool of federal money to police student file-swapping. It has already been shunted to the House Committee on Education and Labor, and might languish there until the end of this Congressional term except for the fact that the HEA, which expires this summer, needs to be reauthorized.

Security gurus look for better ways to classify malware

Two senior security veterans from Trend Micro are trying to get the industry to change how it classifies malicious software.

They argue that today's classification system, which tends to focus on the technical way the software works, neglects a far more important metric that matters more to users: how it tries to steal your money.

"This is my pet bug-a-boo -- the unclear language," said David Perry, global director for education at Trend. "I come from 26 years of technical support, and it irks me that we protect people against things and they don't know what we're protecting them against."

Perry and Anthony Arrott will present their paper, "New approaches to categorizing economically motivated digital threats," on Friday at a security conference in Vienna.

Take the term "virus." The proper definition of virus is a piece of software that replicates or makes copies of itself and attaches itself to other pieces of software. ..

Report: Apple and Google agree not to steal workers

According to sources speaking with TechCrunch, Apple and Google agreed not to "cold hire" each other's employees. The agreement was apparently in place during Eric Schmidt's recent tenure on the Apple board of directors but may or may not still be enforced by the two companies. The report also states that the agreement was not an official written policy but was followed by both companies. The agreement specifically prevented Apple or Google from directly recruiting employees from the opposing company. A worker was however free to apply themselves. This agreement was apparently in place because of loose California non-compete enforcement.
