Matrix Screen Saver

Whether you're a newbie or senior software engineer, you want your screen savers to look cool, and this one fits the bill. It emulates the green Matrix code you see in the movie, with characters running vertically down the black background. You can set the resolution, the speed of the falling glyphs, and other options.

Turkey Screen Saver

Adorn your desktop with some turkeys strutting across a simple black background. As the turkeys amble across the screen, they show a little knowledge of what will become of them Thanksgiving day--making for a poignant scene of innocence the moment before all is corrupted. You can choose from one to ten turkeys; the program also offers password protection.

Note that the screen saver shows the vendor's name on your desktop, and although this brash self-promotion can seem a bit annoying, it is tolerable--especially since the program is free, and because it's seasonal, you'll probably want it on your desktop for only a short time.

There's no other information concerning the images than the names, so if you wish to learn more about spacey sights with names like "Eta Carinae" or "NGC-3603," you'll have to look elsewhere. But the full-screen NASA photographs will jettison you to places far removed from this mudane, terrestrial existence.

Latest Microsoft ad: Laptop hunting Sheila

Microsoft is continuing its ad campaign named "laptop hunters". Yesterday the company unveiled Sheila, hunting for a laptop that could cut video and has a big screen as Sheila is an artist. Microsoft decided to attack the fact Macbooks often come with a small amount of RAM, 2GB in the example they used. Hardened Mac fans could argue, "why not upgrade the RAM?" which is a valid point as less seems to have been made about the price point in this episode. Either way the laptop hunter adverts have certainly triggered debate, criticism and applause from the many thousands that have watched them both here at Neowin and comments throughout various online forums.

Sakshat, the $20 laptop from India

Presumably said with a straight face, India unveiled its Sakshat $20 laptop yesterday. What's hard to come by is how the actual laptop will be built as are no known pictures of the laptop published. The Sakshat laptop, which translates to "before your eyes", will boast 2GB of storage, WiFi, Ethernet and use only 2 watts of power. That is all that is known for now about the cheap laptop but it has many wondering if it is anything more than vaporware. The idea of a $20 laptop is going to be quite the task and is slated for a release this summer.

Microsoft's Laptop Hunters campaign: Meet Matt and Olivia

It has been a while since we've seen a Laptop Hunters commercial from Microsoft, which is part of a huge advertising campaign that pushes the true value of a PC rather than the underlying operating system that Apple continues to bash. However the series is back with Matt and Olivia searching for a laptop that's perfect for sharing pictures of their son Jayden with friends and family. The requirements are simple: $700, large screen, and great battery life. In the end, Matt and Olivia decided on the HP dv7 just as Lauren did in the first Laptop Hunters commercial. As is custom with these commercials the Mac is looked at briefly, this time it's "too small" and "1000 dollars".

MS: "Small problem" with Gears of War on PC

Microsoft has been quick to point out a "small problem" discovered with the PC version of Gears of War - out this week - but happily has provided details on how to resolve the issue.

It's all to do with the very first time you play Gears of War, when an automatic update for Games for Windows - Live is downloaded. Rather than the game being shut down to complete the update as should occur, instead after the update is downloaded you're dropped back into the game's main menu.

"There's two ways to get over this bump", Microsoft has explained.

"The easiest is to simply shut down the game after the update is downloaded (you'll know it's safe because you'll be back at the main menu, and not on the "Don't shut down your PC while the update is being downloaded" screen). As soon as you close the game, the update will install automatically and you're good to go.

Lenovo's bizarre W700d advert

Interesting is one word we'd describe it as but plain bizarre is the outcome of a brand new advert for Lenovo's new W700d dual screen laptop. The laptop got a mention shortly before Christmas and was one of the star attractions at this years CES in Las Vegas. Lenovo's marketing department is hardly creating a star like advert however. The ad shows a male office worker and female colleague on a late-night work session.
