Mac Dock and Windows 7 Superbar - Part 2
In the first part of this series, we had a brief look into the history of the dock and Windows 7 superbar. Today, we will go through some of the basic
functionalities that both dock and superbar provide and have in common. The dock can hold any number of items and resize them dynamically to fit
while using magnification to clarify smaller resized items. Applications that do not normally keep icons in the dock will still appear when running
and remain until they are quit. Running items are distinguished by an indicator at the bottom of their respective icons. When you quit an
application whose icon resides in the dock, the indicator disappears.

05.03.2009Vista Tip Worth Remembering: TaskBar Height and the Start Button
WB: Another option is to right click the Quick Launch area on the TaskBar and select View->Large Icons (Note that "Lock the TaskBar" must be
disabled in order to see the option). This will provide a similar solution to the double height TaskBar while being slightly more compact.
Warner Crocker: The round Start Button or Orb can cause the GPU to force a non-rectangular clipping operation when it is overlapping
a maximized window. This indeed causes
some performance issues, especially on lower end graphics hardware. The best way to remedy the situation is to resize your
Taskbar so that it is double height, which encompasses the Orb.

21.04.2008Microsoft Launches UltimatePC.com - Ultimate Extras?
Microsoft has provided an update for its Vista Ultimate plans.
UltimatePC.com is a new
website where Microsoft is hosting "blueprints" of the best PCs available and exactly what you can achieve with them. Although the domain name was
transferred
last October, Microsoft has only decided to make use of it now.
A small section of the site is "ultimate exclusives".
According to Microsoft these are not replacing Ultimate Extras. The reason given for the poor amount of extras is the high amount of testing and
quality required for them to ship. I would love to see Microsoft simply release powertoys like they did with XP. In Vista you are not even able to
right click a picture and resize it quickly without using 3rd party software. Extras like the XP powertoys are similar to what people expect.

05.03.2008Microsoft's LucidTouch: a multi-touch display with pseudo-transparency
From Apple's iPhone to Microsoft's Surface, multi-touch user interfaces are becoming all the rage. The only trouble is that our fingers are both a
tool and a hindrance; whatever we're interacting with on the display is momentarily blocked by our finger and our hands.
Microsoft, Mitsubishi, and the University of Toronto are working on a solution, and it's called LucidTouch. Ars spoke with Daniel Wigdor, one of
the researchers at the Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs (MERL), to get the inside scoop on what LucidTouch is, what problems the team has run into
along the way, and what's coming in the future.
LucidTouch is currently the name for a prototype device that allows users to
interact with an 800x480 pixel screen without having to touch the front surface. Instead, users can choose to manipulate objects by touching a sensor
pad on the back of the device; this allows users to resize images and text, as well as navigate around any graphical user interface without their
hands getting in the way of the display.

06.09.2007Vista Rant - And yet another boundary defect in Explorer's listview?
Bj Rollison, Microsoft Test Architect in the Engineering Excellence Group: This morning I installed Vista SP1 onto my laptop. I was pretty excited
about this release because it promises better performance as compared to the original release (but, I have not yet worked with it enough to realize
any significant performance gain). But, as I was preparing to teach an internal course I came across a new defect that is bound to cause even more
hair loss, and I have precious little left to lose. I thought, how fitting this post comes as I prepare to teach another class on systematic testing
techniques (including boundary value analysis) that I find yet another classic boundary defect in Explorer's list view (albeit the boundary condition
is not readily apparent) . Interestingly enough, the previous boundary defect I found appears to be fixed with Vista's SP1; however, I previously did
not run across earlier a defect that is probably a bit worse than the previous defect, and it is another problem with how listview repaints itself
after an event.
To reproduce this defect, open a folder with several dozen files in Explorer and select Views -> List and resize
the Explorer window so there are several columns of files...

20.09.2008Patent reveals Aero Glass reflections was also to change according to time of day
Is there a possibility that
we may see this idea as a
future Ultimate Extra or as a
feature in Vista SP1? Only
time will tell...
Dont read this if you are
easily disappointed or are
already disappointed with
Windows Vista compared to
Longhorn, since it just adds
more fuel to the flame. A
patent application filed
yesterday (May 31) reveals a
little more about the other
ideas Microsoft had for Aero
Glass.
The key
characteristics of Aero Glass,
colorization and reflection,
are explained in two separate
patents,
"http://appft1.uspto.gov/neta
cgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect
2=HITOFF&d=PG01&p=1&u=%2Fnetah

window fram colorization" and

GNR.&OS=DN/20070124691&RS=DN/2
0070124691>Dynamic reflective
highlighting of a glass
appearance window frame." The
latter brings up an
interesting idea, it writes:
As described
above, a reflective highlight
of a glass appearance of an
application window frame may
be configured to change during
a move and/or resize operation
based on a set of rules that
describe a reflective
highlight images placement
relative to the current
position of the application
window within a desktop space.
Concurrently or alternatively,
a reflective highlight may be
configured to change in
response to a time of day
event.
If youre
not familiar with the
techno-babble-patent-language,
what it means is that the
reflection in Aero Glass (the
white stripes) was designed to
change based on the position
of the application window on
the desktop, on the time of
day, or both.
