How To Reset, Remove, Clear or Reveal CMOS BIOS Security Password

There are times that we need to reset the computer’s BIOS security password. Yesterday I was at the local government technical school facility and the person who is in charge of the computer told me that they are not able to reinstall Windows because they are not able to get in the BIOS to set the boot order as it is password protected. The lecturers do not know the password as it is not set by them, but by some unknown student.

Kodak Designs New CMOS Sensor

Eastman Kodak Company revealed today in a press release that it has created the world’s first 1.4 micron, 5 megapixel device, the KAC-05020 Image Sensor. Using significantly smaller pixels, this sensor enables a higher level of resolution in small optical formats which will be especially useful in devices like cellphones: the sensor allows for full 720p video at 30fps in a quarter-inch camera. Unlike other small-pixel sensors which can produce poor images, especially under low light conditions, the 1.4 micron pixel used in the KAC-05020 is reportedly able to provide image quality that can equal or surpass what is available from current devices using larger, 1.75 micron pixel CMOS designs.

Major bug in Snow Leopard deletes all user data

Reports have been cropping up on the Apple Support forums that users have been losing all their data due to a nasty bug in Snow Leopard, Apple's latest Operating System. Many users are reporting that all settings are being reset and most data is gone, according to iTWire. The problem, can easily be reproduced when a user logs into the 'guest' account, either on purpose or by accident, and when they log back out of the account and back into their normal one, they find that their account has been fully reset with all data wiped and lost - the account is like a brand new one. The home directory still exists under "/Users/username" but is completely empty.

AMD, Qimonda in joint chip simulation project

Microprocessor manufacturer AMD and memory chip vendor Qimonda have launched a joint chip simulation project for 32nm CMOS and beyond.

The program, dubbed SIMKON, aims at simulation at a very early stage in the design cycle. Thus, the companies which both maintain production sites and mask making facilities in Dresden, Germany, hope to achieve significant benefits in terms of design time and cost during the design and test cycles of new chip generations. The simulation program includes modeling and simulation at the physical level and refers to materials, architectures and manufacturing processes.

With the simulations, the companies intend to define and optimize nanometer production processes in advance. AMD will use the simulation results to optimize its CMOS transistor architectures for the 32nm node and beyond. Qimonda is working in a similar direction and plans to achieve extremely planar wafer surfaces as a precondition for the manufacturing of DRAM chips with these extremely small geometries.

In addition to AMD and Qimonda, nine universities and research institutes participate in the project which in part is is funded by the German Ministry of Research and Education (BMBF) as a part of its IKT2020 research program. The ministry will spent €9 million (about $12.3 million) for the project.

DisplayPort to Support Fiber Optic Cables

The industry's video display standards group, VESA, recently approved DisplayPort 1.1 as an industry standard. Now, a company called Luxtera has received the go-ahead from VESA to develop DisplayPort technologies using CMOS photonics. Luxtera is hoping that its development into the DisplayPort standard will help replace copper cables with optical ones as the medium for transferring high-bandwidth digital video signals. According to the press release: " High performance optical video interconnect based on Luxtera's CMOS Photonics technology is now possible with the addition of Hybrid Devices to the standard resulting in an improved visual user experience ."

According to Luxtera, no other currently announced or available video standard offers the advantages of DisplayPort. " Optical technology, particularly single mode technology, can most effectively address the longer reach market needs for digital signage, projectors, imaging, quiet office and digital home and support much higher performance picture quality for the end user at both short and longer distances ," said Eileen Robarge, group leader for the Luxtera DisplayPort task force. With the backing of Luxtera's technology and VESA's approval, DisplayPort seems to be on its way as the next major computer display standard.

Microsoft Punishes Xbox Live Cheaters

Microsoft's "Major Nelson" sent out a warning at the end of October last year, advising that gamers steer clear of "Gamesaving" to illegitimately increase their Gamerscore.

He said that Microsoft may reset the Gamerscore of offenders who are tampering with save files for that purpose, since it is a breach of the Xbox Live Terms of Use. Tuesday, that warning has been acted upon, as cheaters have come to find that their respective Gamerscores have been reduced to zero, and their Xbox.com profiles have been stamped with a message informing that they cheated for their Gamerscore and it has now been reset. StripClubDj, for example, is one the most known of "Gamesavers", and usually held a top spot on Gamerscore Leaderboards.

China Blocks Apple's ITunes, Amazon Over Tibet Songs

Chinese authorities appear to have blocked access to Apple's U.S. iTunes Music Store, following the release of the 20-song "Songs for Tibet - The Art of Peace" collection Wednesday. Users in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen confirmed that since as early as Wednesday morning, Beijing time, they began receiving "unknown error" messages when they tried unsuccessfully to access the store. Although Apple does not operate an iTunes Store in China, users may download free content such as podcasts, and those with U.S. credit cards may buy content from the U.S. store.

Although Amazon.com remains available in China, its pages for both the "Songs for Tibet" CD and download page fail to load, returning: "The connection was reset. The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading," the most common error message received for blocked sites.

Latest biometric technology scans veins

CNET is reporting that Sony has developed a new biometric scanning technology, called 'Mofiria', that scans the veins in your finger in order to provide access to your laptop or PC. The scanner uses a CMOS sensor to capture scattered light within the finger veins, and compresses the date to allow it to be stored on laptops, or even cellphones. There are many benefits to this new method, claims Sony. Firstly, this technology claims a high accuracy rate, with less than 0.1% false identification. Secondly, it takes a lot less time to scan the finger; it takes 0.015 seconds to scan on a computer CPU, and 0.25 seconds on a mobile phone CPU.

Comcast traffic blocking: even more apps, groupware clients affected

Last week, we reported on mounting evidence that Comcast is targeting and disrupting BitTorrent traffic on its network. Further digging by interested parties has turned up more indication that BitTorrent isn't the only popular P2P protocol being tampered with by the United States' largest ISP.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation noticed the same sort of packet forging that the AP did (and that Broadband Reports readers did some time ago), and continued its testing to see if other applications are affected. The answer is a disturbing "yes." The results of additional testing done by the EFF indicate Comcast is sending forged reset packets with some Gnutella traffic. When the EFF ran a Gnutella node on a Comcast connection, the forged reset packets disrupted communication between the nodes.

What's particularly insidious about Comcast's packet forging is that it's transparent to both its customers and those on the opposite ends of the connection. Applications such as BitTorrent and Gnutella retain some of their functionality, but they'll also appear to malfunction for no apparent reason.

How to check your Hotmail in Safari (3 or) 4

Like a lot of other issues with Hotmail and non-IE browsers, you just need to change the User Agent string to fool Hotmail into thinking it is dealing with a browser it knows about. In Safari, this is pretty easy to do. As far as we can tell, however, Safari doesnt remember the User Agent settings from session to session, so you would need to reset the User Agent for each new session that you want to check your Hotmail account.

Facebook users targeted by botnet spam

Facebook users have been targeted by a large-scale spam attack that informs them that their password has been reset, and that the attached zip archive contains their new password. Instead of a new password, users will find a trojan downloader, dubbed "Bredlab" or "Bredolab" by anti-virus companies. The downloader then downloads additional malware from two servers, including fake anti-virus software, and joins the Bredolab botnet. This gives attackers full control of the PC, allowing them to steal user information or use the PC to send spam emails. One of the servers is based in the Netherlands, with the other in Kazakhstan, according to an alert on Websense, a security research company.
