Microsoft confirmed it has fixed a bug in its online file storage and sharing service Windows Live FolderShare after users reported problems that the
service was deleting files without user authorization.
Microsoft sent an e-mail to users Friday alerting them that it has fixed a
bug that may have "accidentally moved" user files from their original folders into the FolderShare Trash folder, and that users should not delete
files in Trash until they ensure they were meant to be deleted. It also advised users how to retrieve deleted files from the Trash folder.
A copy of the
information sent to users has been posted on the FolderShare Web
site.

few minutes ago which
specified that it is being
offered as a download only. No

receiving this offer.
Kudos to Microsoft! I'm
sure I'm not alone in saying
that they have really shown
their appreciation towards the
people that actually took the
time to submit the bugs that
were eventually worked out of
the final code, some bugs that
were submitted by beta testers
didn't make the final, among
those is the now infamous
explorer folder selection bug*
where the folder remains
selected in the tree view,
deleting a file or folder in
the folder view (right pane)
actually deletes the selection
in the tree menu!
Microsoft had already
announced that this was too
late to be included in the
signed off code and it will be
fixed with a patch update.
*Workaround =
Click on an empty area in the
right pane first before
deleting anything.

There are a number of these folders
around that cant be opened, and they are distinguished by faint folder icons with an arrow overlay. You only see them if you have both Show hidden
files and folders ticked and Hide protected operating system files unticked in Folder Options, View.

Sharing folders vulnerable to buffer overflow
Even though the recent webcam vulnerability in MSN/Windows Live Messenger was only just addressed, another exploitable bug has already surfaced. This
time it's a buffer overflow error that affects the Sharing folders feature in Windows Live Messenger 8.1 (and maybe other versions) running on
Windows XP.
The safety of the Sharing folder feature got questioned before, but we now have a concrete example of how it can be abused. A
Spanish security expert going by the name of Lostmon Lords has discovered that an attacker can cause a Denial-of-Service (DoS) or even execute
arbitrary code in Windows Live Messenger 8.1 by means of a specially crafted jpg, wmf, gif, ico or doc-file.
The attacker can "Create a
sharing folder" for its victim and then put the malformed file into the physical location of that folder on his hard drive (My Computer > My Sharing
Folders > victim@hotmail.com). Note that if the attacker would drag & drop the file directly into the Messenger window, his own client would crash.
Considering that the victim has accepted the sharing folder, the attacker can simply click the sharing icon to crash Windows Live Messenger, or even
Windows XP entirely when the process isn't terminated in time. The victim then needs to delete the sharing folder entirely to cease the
exploitation.

Vista SP1 Integration Guide
As we reported a few days ago, the latest build of Vista SP1
released to testers (6001.16633) is in the EXE standalone update format. Many of you will no doubt be wondering as to how exactly the bits can be
integrated into a Vista RTM ISO if at all possible.
There's some good news and there's also some bad news.
First of all, it must be noted that we are still unsure if the SP1 update will remain in the EXE format and that anything noted below is subject
to change. The primary reason being Microsoft's documentation for Vista Service Packs state that they will be provided in the MSU format whereas it is currently
being offered to testers in the EXE format.
Unlike previous service pack updates for older Windows OSes, Microsoft do not provide
any switches in the EXE to allow for simple integration. Part of the problem has to do with the completely different format that the Vista Setup DVD
uses where each edition of Vista is a separate index in the install.wim and that each index needs to be separately updated. While Microsoft could
implement a switch to allow the user to select which index to update or a switch to update all the indexes, it will turn out to be a very lengthy and
time-consuming process as we are talking about gigabytes of files that need to be updated/replaced, saved and recompressed. Unfortunately, Vista also
does not implement an Updates folder unlike Office 2007 where one could stick all the latest updates in the folder in the ISO and setup would pick
them up and install them...

Patent filed for revolutionary technique to quickly recover lost passwords
ElcomSoft has discovered and filed for a US patent on a breakthrough technology that will decrease the time that it takes to perform password recovery
by a factor of up to 25. ElcomSoft has harnessed the combined power of a PC's Central Processing Unit and its video card's Graphics Processing Unit.
The resulting hardware/software powerhouse will allow cryptology professionals to build affordable PCs that will work like supercomputers when
recovering lost passwords.
Using the "brute force" technique of recovering passwords, it was possible, though time-consuming,
to recover passwords from popular applications. For example, the logon password for Windows Vista might be an eight-character string composed of
uppercase and lowercase alphabetic characters. There would about 55 trillion (52 to the eighth power) possible passwords. Windows Vista uses NTLM
hashing by default, so using a modern dual-core PC you could test up to 10,000,000 passwords per second, and perform a complete analysis in about
two months. With ElcomSoft's new technology, the process would take only three to five days, depending upon the CPU and GPU.

DeluTube offers users a way to view deleted YouTube videos
DeluTube, as its name implies,
can serve up some video clips
even after YouTube has purged
them. That includes clips that
contain copyrighted music and
many clips that aren't work
safe. Delutube allows visitors
to enter the video ID (pulled
from the end of the YouTube
URL) of a deleted clip, then
attempts to retrieve the clip
from YouTube's system. Clips
are apparently not deleted
from YouTube's database at
the moment they are taken down
(or they at least persist in
YouTube's cache before being
cleared), allowing DeluTube a
chance of retrieving them. The
site also allows for the easy
downloading of the clips.
DeluTube isn't the
only service that can do such
a thing, of course, but it's
possibly the most ironic; the
site makes money serving
Google ads. The creation of
these services shows how much
demand exists for this sort of
material, and what a hard time
content owners have
controlling it. The line of
legality is very fuzzy since
the clips all come from
YouTube's servers, whether
they infringe on copyright
laws or are simply
inappropriate. Lawsuits are
undoubtedly coming, but will
they target YouTube for not
completely removing the videos
or will they target DeluTube
and other sites like it?

Changes to UAC in Vista SP1: Much less than meets the eye
A video is making the rounds showing how Vista SP1 has significantly improved Vista's immensely annoying User Account Control (UAC). But there
appears to be less to the improvement than meets the eye --- hardly any changes were made to UAC in SP1, and it remains a very big Vista annoyance.
Microsoft blogger Michael Kleef has
made a video that he says illustrates how much better UAC is under SP1 than before SP1. It very nicely shows that when you create a new folder in
Program Files, you only need to go through one UAC prompt under Vista SP1, rather than four previously.

Office 2007 SP1 Installation/Slipstream Guide
Some of you may be wondering how to do a clean install of Office 2007 using an Office 2007 RTM image along with SP1 at the same time. As you may know,
Office 2007 makes use of the Updates folder in the installation media to install any new updates that it finds in the folder however updates have to
be in the .msp file format for them to be recognized. Since the Office 2007 SP1 update file is delivered in the .exe format, an extra step is required
before being able to proceed:
First, you should copy the contents of the Office 2007 RTM image to a temporary folder. For our
example we're using C:O2007Temp. We have also copied the Office 2007 SP1 Update file (office2007sp1-kb936982-fullfile-en-us.exe) to the D:
drive.
Then, using the Run command in Windows XP/Vista (WinKey+R), run the following command:
D:office2007sp1-kb936982-fullfile-en-us.exe /extract:C:O2007TempUpdates
replacing D: with wherever you stored
the Office 2007 SP1 update file and C:O2007Temp with wherever you stored the Office 2007 RTM files. After agreeing to the Microsoft Software
License Terms, SP1 will be extracted to C:O2007TempUpdates.
That's it! Just start the setup for Office 2007 and the
updates for SP1 will then be picked up and installed during the setup. The same method applies to any other Office 2007 SP1 update.

Windows Vista: Offline Files
Here's one I can relate to,
Jim talks about the improved
Offline files feature in
Vista, something I use myself
and am very happy with.
One of the key things
that we focused on for Windows
Vista was improving the
experience for mobile (laptop)
users. If you are like me, you
spend quite a bit of time
running around with a laptop.
However, when I am in my
office, I tend to use my
desktop. The primary way that
I share files between my
desktop and my laptop is by
storing them on a Windows
Server (it's also the primary
way that I make sure that my
files get backed up). For
example, at Microsoft we
redirect the "Documents"
folder (previously known as
"My Documents" in Windows
XP) to a share on the server
(of course, we use access
controls on the folders to
make sure that I am the only
person who can see my
files).
By
redirecting key folders like
the Documents folder to a file
share, my documents are
available to me no matter
which one of my Windows PCs I
am using. The problem of
course is what happens when I
don't have access to the
server -- such as when I am
not on the corporate network
or perhaps sitting on an
airplane. Frankly, the same
problem exists with any file
share that I might try to
access when I am not on the
corporate network.
