Is Google going to make Microsoft look good?

Why do we like Google? Is it because they are the “do no evil” company? Is it because they are not Microsoft? Is it because they make our lives easier through their search, email, and other services? Mass Effect coming to PC in 2007?

Kotaku&n bsp;has the scoop that a UK gaming magazine, PC Gamer UK to be exact, has word that Bioware's next big game Mass Effect which up until now has been an Xbox 360 exclusive - will supposedly debut on the Games for Windows platform in 2007 now. Here is what PC Gamer UK had to say:   Mass Effect will come to PC (it's currently only announced for Xbox 360): it's not been officially confirmed but we have it on good authority. It's been three years since a BioWare developed game hit the PC: Mass Effect is a forceful reminder of why that's too damn long.   Of course this is by no means a confirmation of the deal here, but Bioware has made some awesome games in the past for consoles and then released them on PC. It makes perfect sense to release a huge, huge game like Mass Effect on the PC as well. Here's hoping.

Microsoft 'will not change Windows'

Microsoft does not plan to change the Korean version of Windows, despite demands from Korean trade authorities and an impending ban on Windows sales in the country, the company told the INQUIRER.

The software company must remove its media player and instant messaging programs from products including Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 within 180 days ??? or stop selling them in Korea, according to a ruling by the Korean Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) announced today. Future products like Windows Vista are also affected. The KFTC ordered Microsoft to offer two versions of its Windows product line, one with the messaging and media player software removed, and one with links promoting competing products.

Microsoft has yet to receive full details of the required changes from the Korean Fair Trade Commission, but at the moment, the company "will not start" to make the requested changes, said Asia Pacific regional marketing manager, Oliver Roll. The company will appeal to the Korean high court, and ask for a delay in implementation of the ruling, he said. If the ruling does take effect, it will have a negative effect on Korean consumers and business, Roll added. ..

1up Pulls Neverwinter Nights 2 Review

Seems the overly negative review of Neverwinter Nights 2 over at 1up didn't sit to well with the members. But that begs the question, why pull a review because it was negative? 1up says it was because the review didn't live up to their "editorial standards" which can be taken many ways. Was it because everyone thought the review was way, way to negative? Or was it because 1up got hate mail due to the negative review? Who knows. All I know is that 1up actually pulled a review - which I don't think I've ever seen happen before with an online review from a major gaming site. The original review gave Neverwinter Nights 2 a 5/10 score, and it was pretty obvious the reviewer didn't care for the D&D rules or world. Plus, as has been said, it was poorly written. Or was it?

Did 1up do the right thing by pulling the review? Should the review have not been pulled? What does that say about a negative reaction to a review in general, if it is so negative it might get pulled by the company? What do you guys think?

You can read the original review here on the Bioware forums.

Barcelona delay could hurt AMD earnings

AMD will delay its launch of the Barcelona quad-core Opteron server chip from its expected date in July until October, setting the company back in its effort to compete with new processors from Intel, according to ever increasing analyst reports.

Processor companies make more money selling server chips than desktop or laptop chips, so the move will hit AMD's 2007 earnings hard, pushing the company to lose $2.59 per share instead of only $2.48 per share, according to a report released Tuesday by Citigroup analyst Glen Yeung.

"Barcelona is generally viewed to be AMD's best opportunity to stem server share loss to Intel. While AMD's recent notebook win at Toshiba may balance any negative revenue implications to our current model, Barcelona's delay has negative implications for AMD's gross margin," Yeung wrote...

Microsoft to Limit Capabilities of Cheap Laptops

Microsoft is launching a program to promote the use of its Windows OS in ultra low-cost PCs, one effect of which will be to limit the hardware capabilities of this type of device, IDG News Service has learned.

Microsoft plans to offer PC makers steep discounts on Windows XP Home Edition to encourage them to use that OS instead of Linux on ultra low-cost PCs (ULPCs). To be eligible, however, the PC vendors that make ULPCs must limit screen sizes to 10.2 inches and hard drives to 80G bytes, and they cannot offer touch-screen PCs.

The program is outlined in confidential documents that Microsoft sent to PC makers last month, and which were obtained by IDG News Service. The goal apparently is to limit the hardware capabilities of ULPCs so that they don't eat into the market for mainstream PCs running Windows Vista, something both Microsoft and the PC vendors would want to avoid.

iSuppli raises 2007 computer sales forecast

Analysts at iSuppli have increased predictions for PC sales in 2007: global PC shipments will rise to 264 million units in 2007, up 11.2% from 239 million in 2006. The previous forecast envisioned 10.7 % growth for the year but iSuppli now expects notebooks to account for almost 40% of total 2007 PC market shipments. " Notebook PC shipments rose to 21.8 million units in the first quarter of 2007, up 23% from 17.7 million in the first quarter of 2006. First-quarter notebook PC shipments were 3% higher than we had previously anticipated. There were concerns that the second-quarter release of Intel's new Santa Rosa notebook microprocessor platform might cause buyers to delay purchases originally set for the first quarter. However, Santa Rosa did not have a significant negative effect on first-quarter shipments ," said Matthew Wilkins, iSuppli principal analyst for computer platforms.

The analysts also issued revised forecasts for the use of flash memory drives as a replacement for hard drives in laptops, predicting that flash-equipped portables would account for 12% of the market by the end of 2009. They also expect 35% of notebooks will be equipped with Hybrid Hard Drives (flash combined with hard drives) by the end of 2009. Intel's Robson (Turbo Memory) is also expected to take off in 2007. The combination of SSDs, HHDs, Turbo Memory and other solutions will propel flash memory's penetration of notebook data storage to nearly 60% by the fourth quarter of 2009, iSuppli predicts.

'Profound' effect seen from Microsoft's EU compliance

Changes Microsoft will make to its business practices to comply with the 2004 European Commission antitrust ruling will "profoundly affect the software industry," European competition commissioner Neelie Kroes said Monday.

For three and a half years Microsoft dragged its feet and used every legal avenue available to delay complying with the 2004 antitrust ruling. But after its appeal of the ruling to Europe's second highest court failed last month, the company decided to cooperate.

"At the time the Court of First Instance issued its judgment in September, Microsoft committed to taking any further steps necessary to achieve full compliance with the Commission's decision. We have undertaken a constructive discussion with the Commission and have now agreed on those additional steps," Microsoft said in a statement Monday.

Analysts: Vista SP1 delay won't hurt enterprises

Although Microsoft may not have the first service pack for Windows Vista ready at the end of this year as some expected, financial analysts say that a delay should not have a negative effect on enterprise adoption of the OS.

Many large enterprise customers have said they will wait for the first service pack for Vista to deploy the software across their companies. Some were expecting SP1 before the end of the year after Microsoft Senior Vice President Bob Muglia said in a published report last November it would be released with Windows Server, code-named Longhorn, due by the end of 2007.

However, rumors swirled last week that the release of the pack would be pushed into 2008 after Microsoft said in a court filing dated June 19 it would only have a test version of Vista SP1 out before the end of the year.

UBS Investment Research analyst Heather Bellini tried to allay investor fears in a research note published Monday, saying that the end-of-the-year release of a beta listed in the document "probably represents a 'drop-dead' date."..
