Modifying the All Users profile in Vista or Windows Server 2008

Peter Fitzsimon: Ok, so I just spend a few whistful hours trying to work out how to modify the "All Users" profile on a Windows Server 2008 system. I wanted to add a program to run at login (e.g. in the Start Menu|Programs|Startup directory) for all users that login, but things are now a bit different with Vista and Windows Server 2008.

I have found quite a few people asking similar questions on the Internet but no one seems to have offered a solution that works so I thought I'd post my findings.

Firstly, for those who haven't hit this before, the "C:Documents and Settings" directory where user profiles are stored in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 systems has changed to "C:Users" in Vista and Windows Server 2008. (I regularly encounter XP users who have upgraded to Vista getting confused by this one)

Facebook has stepped forward and joined OpenID with a growing number of popular web sites that have recently joined OpenID. CardSpace (InfoCard) and Live ID

Running Windows Vista? Noticed the Windows CardSpace applet in the Vista control panel but not sure what its for? That may soon change if Windows Live ID provides CardSpace integration.

Formerly called InfoCard, CardSpace integration with Windows Live was discussed back in March 2006 when Live ID was first emerging as the updated Microsoft Passport. To put it as simply as possible, CardSpace allows you to securely store multiple identies on your PC, and use them online when required. This eliminates the need to enter a password when you want to identify yourself to a web service - instead you choose the identity you wish to send from your PC. This helps protect the user from phishing scams and keyloggers, which for more important services like online banking, helps reduce the risk of identity theft.

So how would this work for Live ID? Testers of the in-beta Windows Live ID authentication services SDK (which allows users to log into 3rd party sites with their Live ID) are currently able to create a custom signin page on the Windows Live ID test servers. This login page presents the user with the existing option to sign in with a Live ID, or the alternative - to sign in using CardSpace.

Firefox, IE vulnerable to fake login pages?

Mozilla's Firefox 2 and Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 are vulnerable to a flaw that could allow attackers to steal passwords.

Dubbed a reverse cross-site request, or RCSR, vulnerability by its discoverer, Robert Chapin, the flaw lets hackers compromise users' passwords and usernames by presenting them with a fake login form. Firefox Password Manager will automatically enter any saved passwords and usernames into the form.

The data is then automatically sent to an attacker's computer without the user's knowledge, according to the Chapin Information Services site.

An exploit for this flaw has already been seen on social-networking site MySpace.com, and it could affect anyone using a blog or forum that allows user-generated HTML code to be added, according to Chapin.

"Users of both Firefox and Internet Explorer need to be aware that their information can be stolen in this way when visiting blog and forum Web sites at trusted addresses," Chapin said.

According to security company Netcraft, which discovered the exploit being used on MySpace, a fraudulent login page was hosted on the company's own servers.

Using Certificate-Monitoring Tools with Windows Server 2008

One of the main objectives of administering certificates is to achieve an advanced level of security in your enterprise. Identity and access management should be taken very seriously. In this article we will very briefly cover what CAs are and then cover the important aspects of using specific certificate-monitoring tools such as PKIView.msc and certutil.exe with Windows Server 2008. It is Important to know how certificates affect your security posture and if they are healthy or require maintenance, such as replacement. An expired certificate can show a request of a service to show that your security is weak or non-existent; many times it may even instigate an attack. It may also indicate that you have not taken care of your updates, do not have a maintenance routine, and do not get real time fault-based email or text alerts or worse. This article covers the importance of using certificates, and how to monitor them with Windows Server 2008.

Windows Live to act as OpenID provider

In July of last year, Microsoft threw its weight behind supporting the OpenID protocol. In February of this year, Microsoft joined the OpenID foundation's board. Now, Microsoft has committed to OpenID further by announcing that Windows Live will become a OpenID provider and that you will soon be able to use your Windows Live ID account to sign in to any OpenID enabled website.

OpenID is a distributed authentication method for allowing users to securely use a single digital ID to sign into multiple websites on the Internet. AOL and Yahoo already allow users to authenticate against their AOL or Yahoo credentials on sites using OpenID. Google so far has not adopted OpenID through any supported means.

Currently Microsoft's OpenID implementation is on their Windows Live ID Integration environment, intended for sites and software providers who provide OpenID authentication to test against the service. Your normal Windows Live ID cannot currently be used for OpenID. Microsoft does not seem to have any plans to allow the use of your OpenID to login to sites that require a Windows Live ID. Meaning you'll still need to maintain accounts at Yahoo, AOL and Windows Live to login to services on their individual sites. However, in becoming a provider, Microsoft has taken a step in the right direction towards opening up their services.

Microsoft has given no specifics on when they plan to make OpenID authentication available on their public servers.

Google Cross Domain Bug Proof of Concept

Google's Gmail service suffers from security flaws that make it trivial for attackers to create authentic-looking spoof pages that steal users' login credentials, a security expert has demonstrated. Google Calendar and other sensitive Google services are susceptible to similar tampering.

A proof-of-concept (PoC) attack, published by Adrian Pastor of the GNUCitizen ethical hacking collective, exploits a weakness in the google.com domain that allows him to inject third-party content into Google pages. The result is this page, which allowed him (at time of writing, anyway) to display a fraudulent Gmail login page that displayed mail.google.com in the browser's address bar.
