Windows 7 Migration from Windows XP

Jeff Alexander: Windows 7 has some great tools for migration from previous operating systems. Some that come to mind are Deployment Imaging and Service Management (DISM), mounting VHDs natively in the operating system and User State Migration. But one of the best features in my opinion and many of my mates in the community is the ability to boot natively to a VHD. This gives you flexibility in your migration scenarios and is one way you can preserve your settings from the previous OS installation.

Windows 7 Pre-Beta Build Leaked

"Oops!"

A build being demoed at WinHEC China this week, build 6956, was leaked by a show attendee, but in an unusual fashion, taking advantage of a new feature in Windows 7.

The attendee managed to clone the demo machine's hard drive into a VHD file, a virtual hard drive format that is fully supported in Windows 7. He then moved the image onto his portable drive and walked away from the booth, never caught by any Microsoft employee or security.

Since Microsoft will probably not use a GPO to disable VHD creation on demo machines (it is a new feature, after all), it will be interesting to see if future builds are leaked in the same routine. It's surprising that copying files to removable disks wasn't disabled on these machines as the ones at PDC were.

Looking for some eye candy? Screenshots at the source.

Windows 7 upgrade chart available

Microsoft has made available the official Windows 7 Upgrade chart, via allthingsd which indicates which previous versions of Windows are available for an in-place upgrade to Windows 7, and to which version they can upgrade. You can view the chart below: As you can see from just a glance at the chart, it's relatively confusing. Windows 7 offers no direct upgrade path from XP, which was announced very early on in the Windows 7 development life cycle. Very specific upgrade paths from other versions of Windows Vista exist also. You can perform a "Custom Install" which is pretty much a clean install, but you have the option to install Windows 7 to another disk without overwriting data.

Microsoft and Citrix Extend Virtualization Alliance

Today at VMworld 2007, Microsoft Corp. and Citrix Systems Inc. announced that they have strengthened their longtime integration alliance in the desktop and application delivery market by standardizing on the Microsoft® Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) format as a common runtime environment for both virtualized operating systems and applications.

This collaboration will result in future versions of Citrixs Desktop Server and virtual application solutions adopting the Microsoft VHD format. At the same time, Microsoft plans to adapt a future version of Microsoft SoftGrid Application Virtualization for both the desktop and Terminal Services to the VHD format. Add to that the growing complexity created by more mobile and temporary workers, and new data security and compliance requirements...
