Vista says NO to old DVD drives

Windows Vista will no longer support DVD-ROM drives that do not handle region coding in hardware (RPC1 drives) - thus preventing playback of DVDs that are region/CSS encoded with those drives.

Not a big problem, as RPC1 drives haven't been officially manufactured since 2000 (and Microsoft claims their drives are all broken), but for those with hacked drives (RPC2 with RPC1 firmware), or move the RPC1 drive to new computers, well, no more DVD movies for you!

Workaround Discovered For "Clean Install" With Vista Upgrade

DailyTech has posted a 7-step workaround courtesy of Paul Thurrott (via Microsoft internal documents) on how to perform a clean install with a Windows Vista Upgrade DVD. Per Microsoft's new licensing requirements for Vista, users are required to install a Windows Vista Upgrade from within Windows XP and to make matters worse, the Windows XP license is forfeited. The process may be tedious, but few will argue when they compare the price differences between the upgrade and retail versions. Here we go:
  1. Boot from the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD and start the setup program.
  2. When prompted to enter your product key, DO NOT enter it. Click "Next" and proceed with setup. This will install Windows Vista as a 30-day trial.
  3. When prompted, select the edition of Vista which you have purchased and continue with setup.
  4. Once setup has been completed and you have been brought to the desktop for the first time, run the install program from within Windows Vista.
  5. This time, type in your product key when prompted.
  6. When asked whether to perform an Upgrade or Custom (advanced) install, choose Custom (advanced) to perform a clean install of Vista. Yes, this means that you will have to install Vista for a second time.
  7. Once setup has completed for the second time, you should be able to activate Windows Vista normally. You can also delete the Windows.old directory which contains information from the first Vista install.

Vista pushes XP and Linux aside on Asus EeePC

The Asus EeePC ships with Linux but with the help of an external DVD drive, its possible to install almost any OS of your choice, even Leopard with a bit of hacking but that comes with some legal issues that are discussed in that post.

Lets face it, the Asus EeePC isnt too terribly useful with the Linux install that it comes with, you cant add applications to it until they are developed and the update installer is somewhat lacking. The first thing I did was wipe the hard drive and install Windows XP Home Edition but one user decided to install something else.

I wouldnt have thought the EeePC capable of running Vista but according to the EeePC forums thats exactly what one user is doing. To be fair, there may be more but this is the only one I know of.

Toshiba to Install HD DVD Drive into All Its Laptops

In a bid to push its HD DVD format, Toshiba would install appropriate optical drives into all of its notebooks, the company said at a press conference. The move will allow the company to increase penetration of HD DVD, but it is questionable whether with hybrid drives on the market and relatively low market share of Toshiba in the notebook universe it will catalyze a substantial success.

Toshibas senior vice president Hisatsugu Nonaka said that the company would integrate HD DVD optical drives into all of its laptops next year, as the demand towards high definition movie playback is strong.

The demand is there: people want to watch their favorite movies in high-definition on the road, Mr. Nonaka is reported to have said according to Reuters news-agency...

Vista tips and tricks: changing boot options on the fly

There are a number of boot options that can be used in Vista and Windows Server 2008 that can be a pain to modify (or not possible if you are in a bugcheck loop), that can be done on the fly at boot time. These options are invaluable for diagnosing some problems you may experience on the system, and modifying them in the OS may involve figuring out the bcdedit syntax, the right BCD store to modify, or rebuilding and burning a new install DVD (if the problem is happening during install from media).

Some example boot switches you might want to use are...

Windows Vista Grace Period Extended to 120 Days

Every Vista DVD includes the ability to install any edition of Vista without a product key. When you install without a product key, you get an automatic 30 day evaluation period. This probably isn't news to anyone.

What may be news to you, however, is that you can easily extend the 30-day Windows Vista grace period to 120 days. No hacks required. This is an official, supported operation directly from Microsoft.

To extend the grace period another 30 days, simply start a command prompt as Administrator, and issue this command:

slmgr -rearm

Reboot for the change to take effect, and voila, you have 30 more days. You can only extend three times, so the total grace period for a Vista evaluation is 120 days.

Windows recovery loophole lets hackers in

Windows Vista may be Microsoft's most secure operating system to date, but researchers are still finding some glaring loopholes for hackers to exploit. Here is the latest: all you need is a Vista Install DVD to get admin level access to a hard drive.

The loophole arises because the Command Prompt tool in Vista's System Recovery Options fails to request user name or passwords before handing over access to PCs running the operating system.

The hack, discovered by security researcher Kimmo Rousku, only works locally. Physical access to a target PC is a must. Even so, the potential for mischief (such as deleting directories or copying files on targeted PCs) is enormous. Hackers don't even necessarily need to run a DVD. "Its easy to create a bootable USB flash memory that works in a similar way," Rousku notes. ..

Install Windows Vista from a high speed USB 2.0 Flash Drive

Why would someone want to install a client OS from a thumb drive instead of a DVDROM or over the network? One reason: Performance.

Installing Windows Vista from a high speed USB flash drive is in my experience the easiest & fastest way to complete a Windows Vista install. This is much faster than using a DVD, gigabit ethernet, or possibly even some external USB 2.0 hard drives, due to differences in access speed & transfer rate. To put this into perspective, y'know how installing Windows on a Virtual PC virtual machine from an .ISO CD image is really, really, really fast?

Imagine something roughly just as fast, except for doing installations of the OS on to actual workstations.

Vista Beta 2: Biggest download in history

In an instant message chat, Microsoft has told the Windows Featured Communities that the demand for Windows Vista Beta 2 has been overwhelming. It is, in fact, the largest downloaded software in history. Currently, they are serving product keys out ten times faster then the downloads can be served. In fact, they are pumping out bits as fast as they can - any faster and there would be a measurable impact on the internet. In fact, I quote a Microsoft representive:

"So, we are literally saying that if we increased our bandwidth any further there's a possibilty of taking down the Internet - people might have problems with World Cup viewing, etc"

People who have recieved Vista Beta 2 product keys, but are unable to download, may need to wait a few days, up to one week. Microsoft encoruages users who want to try out Windows Vista Beta 2 to order the DVD. When they recieve the DVD in 1-4 weeks, install it, and activate it, they will be automattically guaranteed an RC1 upgrade.

[Vista] Thirty-Six Updates Later-and Counting

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I refreshed one of my Windows Vista test machines. Oh my, there were so many Windows Updates. The Lenovo ThinkPad T60p got a clean OS install, because I wanted to see how the experience has changed since Vista's main launch on January 30. The Vista experience is now a topic of great debate. For example, CNET's Crave blog—UK version, anyway—puts Vista on its list of "top ten terrible tech products."

That's for all time, not just for 2007, or so it looks based on the list. Mac OS X 10.0 was a whole lot worse than Vista, guys. Where were they in 2001? Seventh grade? I hadn't ever done a clean install on the T60p with Vista only, meaning no Lenovo drivers or other software. T60p configuration: 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB DDR2 SDRAM, 100GB hard drive (but with only about 86.8GB available to the user), 15.4-inch widescreen display with optimum resolution of 1680 x 1050, 256MB ATI Mobility FireGL V5250 graphics processor (dedicated RAM and 767MB shared with the system memory), multi-DVD recorder (which may include DVD-RAM), 802.11 a/b/g wireless, Bluetooth and biometric reader.

Do you know how to deploy?

James Senior: Who actually uses a DVD to deploy? Do you build PC's and sell them? Are you frustrated? Frustrated by the speed of your deployments? Do you find yourself waiting, brewing tea waiting, wondering if... if there is a better way, a better way to deploy the one thing that holds you back. Yes, I'm talking about your Operating System. I don't mean to be rude, but the number of people who put their hands up at roadshows when we ask the question, "who installs their OS using DVD" is quite frankly worrying...no disturbing. Let me put it in perspective.

If you are installing your OS, beit Windows Vista (preferably) or Windows XP by DVD then in effect you might as well install it using floppy disks.

Although technically not a fair comparison the analogy holds true.

What then is the alternative?

HD DVD and Blu-ray coming to Santa Rosa IGP

In the second half of 2007, Intel's recently-launched Santa Rosa platform will get a next-generation DVD playback option, according to Intel mobile graphics spokesperson Mike Choi. Intel will use a third-party hardware decoder to bring HD DVD and Blu-ray support to versions of Santa Rosa with integrated graphics processors (IGPs).

Intel's decision to use a dedicated decoder chip will let the company keep costs down. Instead of relying on a more expensive discrete GPU to do the decoding, Intel can ship next-generation DVD support with its IGP products.

When next-generation DVD playback finally arives, the Intel graphics solution will be optimized for Vista. Currently, Vista loses some of the Aero effects during HD playback on some non-Intel systems, but Intel's optimizations will let users have the full Aero experience simultaneous with HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. ..
