Potential pirates, not Vista, get cracked

35 days before Windows XP was officially released, a pirated key, called the "devils0wn", began circulating around the web which allowed users to run a pirated copy of the operating system. Since then, the key has been used thousands of times and is now a part of Windows XP history. Trying to follow in devils0wn's footsteps, a new crack for Windows Vista is rumored to have become available. Called "Windows Vista All Versions Activation 21.11.06", the key reportedly unlocks any version of Vista. Sounds great for pirates, right? Maybe it is, depending where you stand on software piracy.

Those who download "Windows Vista All Versions Activation 21.11.06" will end up with anything but a cracked version of Vista. The file is neither a crack nor key generator, but it is a trojan installer that installs the malware known as "Trojan-PSW.Win32.LdPinch.aze ." According to APC Magazine, most antivirus scanners will recognize the trojan, but NOD32 and Norton's latest signatures do not.

While most of us dread the thought of a new piece of malware in the wild, it's hard not to like the motive behind this trojan. Nevertheless, any propagation of malware is a bad thing so I'm happy to hear that most scanners can stop this one.

Even with Vista SP1, Hackers Still Crack WGA

The fact that Microsoft has relaxed its antipiracy mechanism built into Windows Vista concomitantly with the release of Service Pack 1 failed to stop hackers from providing a crack for the latest version of Windows Genuine Advantage Validation. Various reports point out that Genuine Advantage Validation and Notifications versions 1.7.69.1 (1.7.0069.1) and 1.7.69.2 released in March 2008, following the March 18 availability of Windows Vista SP1 through Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center, have been cracked.

The workaround is designed to be integrated with pirated copies of Windows XP and Windows Vista in order to render useless the WGA Validation mechanism. According to the reports, applying the WGA crack will permit users of counterfeit versions of Windows to access and download items from Windows Update, Microsoft Download Center and Microsoft Update. The pirated operating systems with the cracked WGA will pass all validations on Microsoft's websites and offer anything from updates to applications that are restricted to users of genuine operating systems only.

Hulu tried to encrypt content, already cracked

Hulu is trying to keep its content restricted to traditional browsers. By doing so it hopes to shut down clients such as Boxee and other apps that enable the websites content to be distributed over non traditional browsers. Milliesoft "h come across an interesting development with Hulu this morning. They have started encoding the html that they send to people's browsers, and then decoding it using javascript before rendering it." This appears to be an on going battle against non traditional means of displaying Hulu's content. The reasoning may be revenue based as the site may not receive proper views or clicks when viewed in such manor.

HD DVD anti-rip encryption cracked

Has the HD DVD next-generation optical disc format's anti-rip technology been cracked? That's certainly what's being claimed by a programmer going by the name muslix64 who has posted a Java-based app he maintains will free the video on a disc from its encryption shackles.

HD DVD used the AACS copy-protection system to encode content. So does the Blu-ray Disc format, though it adds a couple of extra anti-piracy techniques to boost its level of protection. According to muslix64's posting on a Doom9 forum, nosing around his PC's memory, he found his test disc's title encryption key and was able to use to copy the movie to his hard drive and decrypt the video.

Vista, MacBook Out--Only Linux Left in Hacking Contest

The MacBook Air went first; a tiny Fujitsu laptop running Vista was hacked on the last day of the contest; but it was Linux, running on a Sony Vaio, that remained undefeated as conference organizers ended a three-way computer hacking challenge Friday at the CanSecWest conference.

<...> It took two days of work, but Shane Macaulay, finally cracked the Vista box on Friday, with a little help from his friends.

Macaulay, who was a co-winner of last year's hacking contest, needed a few hacking tricks courtesy of VMware researcher Alexander Sotirov to make his bug work. That's because Macaulay hadn't been expecting to attack the Service Pack 1 version of Vista, which comes with additional security measures. He also got a little help from co-worker Derek Callaway.

iPhone Encryption Can be Cracked?.. In Under Two Minutes!

One major barrier to entry into the business world is security. RIM has earned a solid reputation with reliable and secure data transmissions along with Microsoft
. As Apple attempts to show that its platform is ready for the business world, a well known hacker is claiming that the phones encryption can be cracked in less than two minutes.

The ease of use of the iPhone is what is attracting many to the platform. With its finger friendly OS and an application database that is growing at incredible rates; compatibility is expanding each and every week.

Encrypting message is something every organization relies on in-case the mobile equipment accidentally falls into the wrong hands to prevent trade secrets from being stolen. Jonathan Zdziarski, a well known iPhone hacker, claims that "I don't think any of us have ever seen encryption implemented so poorly before, which is why it's hard to describe why it's such a big threat to security." He claims that he was only using off the shelf software
and compromised the iPhone in under two minutes.

Until Apple has proven the strength of its encryption it may take longer for widespread corporate adoption. As the user base of the iPhone continues to grow it will become a larger target for malicious users who wish to inflict harm on individuals and corporations; security can never be overlooked.

Windows Vista Validation Update (KB929391)

Microsoft have just posted a Windows Vista Genuine Validation Update to Windows Update. The update provides the latest information to the Windows Vista validation components, and is marked as an "Important" update.

It seems that the aim of the update is to further prevent "cracked" copies of Windows Vista from being able to run. Install the Windows Vista validation component updates to make sure that your copy of Windows Vista is genuine and is correctly licensed. If a problem is detected, the update will provide additional instructions.

Why pirated Vista has Microsoft champing at the BitTorrent

As Microsoft Corp. gets ready to launch Windows Vista and Office 2007 to consumers, it claims a formidable new foe it lacked at its last major consumer software launch five years ago: the popular filesharing network known as BitTorrent. This third-generation peer-to-peer (P2P) service, already used by tens of millions of Internet users to swap digital music and movies for free, is becoming a popular mechanism for those looking to obtain pirated software. "Any software that is commercially available is available on BitTorrent," according to Mark Ishikawa, CEO of BayTSP Inc., a Los Gatos, Calif., antipiracy consulting firm.

Or in the case of Vista and Office 2007, before they were commercially available. Both products were released to corporations almost two months ago, but won't be officially launched to consumers until Jan. 29. But as early as mid-November, "cracked" copies of both products were available via BitTorrent. As of mid-January, more than 100 individual copies of Office 2007 and more than 350 individual copies of Windows Vista were available on the service, according to BigChampagne LLC, a Los Angeles-based online media-tracking firm. The pirates that cracked early copies of Vista all sidestepped Microsoft's latest antipiracy technology, the Software Protection Platform. SPP is supposed to shut down any copy of Vista not registered to Microsoft over the Internet with a legitimate, paid-up license key within the first 30 days.

WPA is going the way of WEP, cracked in 15 minutes flat

According to PC World the days of securing your WIFI network using Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) may be over, as researcher Erik Tews will show how he was able to crack WPA encryption in around 15 minutes at a the Tokyo PacSec Conference in two weeks time.

WPA was designed to overcome the insecurities in hacked Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) which can be hacked in a few minutes using a modern laptop.

Erik Tews will be demonstrating how he cracked the WPA encryption to read the data being sent from a router to a laptop.

To read the data being sent Tews found a way to crack the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) key without resorting to using a dictionary attack which, security experts have agreed that the protocol might be vulnerable too.
Although this is a big step Tews was still unable to crack the keys used to encrypt the data being sent back to the router from the laptop.

If the demonstration lives up to its headline then the days of WPA look to be numbered. This would come as a big blow to both consumers and corporations alike.

WPA is the most common standard of encryption in uses but, there is also a newer more secure standard WPA2, (which uses Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and is unaffected), although support is still patchy. Consumer may find they are forced to still rely on the now unsecure WPA encryption to connect their devices to the network.

For Business this is even bigger headache. The TJ Maxx chain had hundreds of millions of customer details stolen due in part to the fact that they were still using the cracked WEP standard. It’s easy to see a situation where hackers may try to do the same using WPA forcing corporate users to VPN or WPA2 dumping devices that can’t support these protocols.

SlySoft claims to have cracked BD+, naysayers fall quiet

Regrettably, there's not a lot of details beyond that just yet, but according to the outfit's CEO, the software is ready to rock and should be released before the end of 2007. Half of Pirated Vista is Malware

According to security vendor DriveSentry, about half of downloads claiming to be free versions of Microsoft Windows Vista are in fact malicious Trojan horses. With Vista's consumer launch just days away, discussion boards and peer-to-peer networks are full of offers of "cracked" versions of Windows Vista. The downloaded programs claim to skip Vista's activation process but are in fact malicious key-logging software and spyware. This isn't anything new though, the same deal occurred with Windows XP. Pirated versions of Vista have been in circulation for several months now, and one called "Windows Vista All Versions Activation 21.11.06" has already been identified as a Trojan. It's an effective technique, said John Lynch, vice president of sales and marketing for DriveSentry. " Someone that's stealing the software to begin with is not going to raise a fuss if the software turns out to be malicious ."
