Two months after acknowledging a serious data corruption bug exists in Windows Home Server, Microsoft has admitted it still has no fix. The latest
update to its knowledgebase entry essentially says, "
still workin' on
it". The bug relates to a little known, but frequently used, method of writing hidden data to NTFS file systems, which is incompatible with the
disk pooling strategy used in Home Server.
The software giant first acknowledged the problem on December 21 last year, providing a list of
programs that could cause data on a Windows Home Server to become corrupted, including Windows Vista Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery,
OneNote 2007, OneNote 2003, Outlook 2007, Money 2007, SyncToy 2.0 beta, QuickBooks and uTorrent.

Microsoft has detailed its plans to release a public beta of its Windows Home Server Power Pack.
The update will include a fix for the data
corruption issues that have plagued the OS since its release.
In a message to potential testers the company said:
"Due to the
nature of the shared folder data corruption bug (KB #946676) a broad beta test program with sufficient time for feedback is required. The time line
for a final release will depend on this feedback and testing, in order to deliver a fix of the highest quality. To meet our goals for the beta test we
need the number of beta testers who are actively using and testing the Power Pack 1 beta to ramp up very quickly"
The company is asking
for anyone currently using Home Server to sign up to the beta to ensure the data corruption issue is fixed.

Acknowledging the "data
corruption bug" that's been ravaging Windows Home Servers since Christmas, Microsoft today
warned users NOT to:
¢ "Use applications to directly edit or change files stored on Windows Home
Server"
¢ "Use media management programs, such as Windows Media Player, to import files to the Windows Home Server"
¢
"Redirect applications to access files stored in the shared folders"
Instead, users are instructed to move files to and from the server only by
hand, using Windows Explorer or a command line tool. Promise of a fix was cautiously optimistic, but not exactly speedy:
The issue
can now be reliably reproduced and a fix is in development. Once the patch has passed internal quality bars, external participants will be asked to
help test the fix. Our current plan is to release beta test versions of a fix over the next few months, with a final version currently estimated for
June 2008.

Mozilla has released an update to its Firefox browser, fixing a widely publicized flaw in the open-source software. The 2.0.0.10 update fixes a
handful of memory corruption flaws that crash Firefox and a cross-site request forgery flaw that could give attackers a way to get unauthorized access
to certain Web sites. But the most anticipated bug fix in this release addresses a problem in the way Firefox processes files that are compressed
using the .jar (Java Archive) format.
Firefox does not properly check .jar files, giving attackers a way to launch Web-based
cross-site-scripting attacks against Firefox users. The bug was first reported in February, but it gained widespread attention in early November when
security researchers showed how it could be used in cross-site scripting attacks to run unauthorized code on the victim's PC. The memory
corruption bugs could also have led to more serious problems, Mozilla said in its note on the bugs. "We presume that with enough effort, at least
some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code," the note reads.

“When certain programs are used to edit or transfer files that are stored on a Windows
Home Server-based computer that has more than one hard drive, the files may become corrupted”.
According to an Microsoft email sent
to beta testers this has now been fixed:
“While internal testing so far indicates that we have fixed the data corruption bug in the
beta release, the whole point of a beta test is to validate internal testing”
