iWork '09: No Serial Required

iWork '09, released roughly two weeks ago, has been reported in an Apple support document to not require a serial number for activation unlike its preceder, iWork '08. Activating downloaded trial versions still do require a serial that can be purchased for $79.

This feature however is not unique to iWork, iLife and OS X have never required activation in the past.

iWork '09 and iLife '09 were announced on January 6th and are currently available for purchase and pre-order on Apple.com. iWork.com, also announced at MacWorld, is currently available as a free public beta accessible within the iWork applications.

Karma, no matter what you do it will come back to bite you where it hurts the most. Up to 20,000 pirates who thought they would get away without paying for iWork '09 have learned that the hard way. A recent copy of iWork '09 was leaked to the web but contained a free bonus add on, a virus called OSX.Trojan.iServices.A. This virus does the nasty work of installing itself in the startup as root. It then goes on and broadcasts its location and allows for malicious users to take over your Mac and install anything they want and modify files already on your computer.

iLife '09 and iWork '09 Released

Today, at Apple’s final appearance at MacWorld, the popular software applications iLife ‘09 and iWork ‘09 were both updated.

iWork ’09, which comes with Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, had many very useful features added. Pages received a decent amount of updates, with a full screen view of documents, dynamic outlines, integration with MathType and EndNote, and 40 new themes included. In Keynote, there are several new transitions and chart options. Apple released a new keynote remote app for the iPhone/iPod Touch that will allow you to control and preview your slide show. The app however is not free surprisingly and will cost $0.99. Numbers got 250 new functions to make things easier to understand. Most notable however is the future launch of iWork.com. This will be a fee-based service that will allow others to review and edit your documents online.

iLife ’09, including iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb, and GarageBand, also had its fare share of updates today. This version of iLife will only run on Mac OS X Leopard. iMovie had received dynamic themes, automatic image stabilization, precision editor, advanced drag and drop, and video effects. In iPhoto, faces (facial recognition), places (using GPS locations to tag areas in photos), and slideshow themes (using facial dedication to property position pictures in a slide show) were all added. Finally, in GarageBand, music lessons by professionals and celebrities were added. A few are included, but additional lessons cost $4.99 each to download.

iLife ‘09, iWork ‘09, and OS X Leopard are all available in the Mac Box Set costing $169.00. Individually, iLife and iWork cost $79.00 each for a single user license and $99.00 each for a family license, which allows you to install to program on up to five Mac computers in your household. Apple computers purchased between January 6, 2009 and March 28, 2009 that do not include iLife ’09 can be upgraded for $9.95 through Apple. All software titles are expected to be shipping in late January.

iWork and Office: Can they work together?

Apple says iWork is compatible with Microsoft Office. But what does that really mean and is it true?

It's true that you can move documents between iWork and Office. But when you do, they may look or function differently than they did in their parent programs. In Macworlds recent feature comparing Word and Pages, Excel and Numbers, and PowerPoint and Keynote , we discussed the differences in features between those programs. But (as several readers pointed out in comments to those stories), we didn't cover the file-compatibility or interoperability issues that arise when you're trying to move documents from one suite to another. That's what I'd like to do here.

Rumor: iWork and iMovie going to meet iCloud

Cloud Computing seems to be one of the new technology that created much hype last year(2008) and we saw Amazon, Google and Microsoft entering into the Cloud. There are usually two categories in the Cloud: You provide a platform where developers can build applications and host in the Cloud in your platform, or, Develop a full fledged 'cloudy application' and allow users to use itSome examples of Cloud platform are Google's App Engine and Microsoft's Azure. And some examples for a full fledged 'cloudy application' are Zoho, Google Docs, Office Live Workspace. 9to5Mac and ComputerWorld report that now Apple might join the competition and enter into the Cloud world. This announcement is expected at the upcoming MacWorld.

The Pirate Bay trial, '80% of our torrents are legal'

The ongoing trial for The Pirate Bay is attracting international attention over the court case that could change the internet forever. Neowin has been keeping up with the trial and the latest argument from TPB ( The Pirate Bay) is that "n internal survey revealed that 80% of 1000 torrents observed are, in fact, legal". Sunde, the spokes person for TPB, went on to argue that there is more copyrighted material on YouTube than on TPB. The prosecutors are also trying to establish that a hierarchy does exist at TPB but appear to be failing at solidifying their case. "Someone must ultimately decide whether to put up a certain text or graphic," asked Roswall. "No," Neij replied. "Why?

The Pirate Bay trial and a tough new Swedish law

According to the Local, various members of the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) have taken the stand in the ongoing trial against the Pirate Bay now unfolding in Sweden. Sony BMG v. Tenenbaum: filesharing trial to be webcast?

With materials provided by MediaSentry, the RIAA accused former Harvard University student Joel Tenenbaum of sharing seven songs over the KaZaA network in 2003. In 2007, after Tenenbaum had tried but failed to "settle" the case to Sony BMG's satisfaction, they sued him. On 23 December 2008 Tenenbaum's lawyer, Harvard professor Charles Nesson, filed a motion requesting that the court allow the trial to be streamed live on the internet.

RIAA awarded $80,000 for each file-shared song

In her second, but almost certainly not final, trial, Jammie Thomas-Rasset (née Thomas) has now been ordered by a federal jury to pay $1.92 million to the RIAA for the 24 songs she is charged with sharing online. That comes out to $80,000 per track, considerably more than the $208.33 per track the RIAA, according to their legal summation at trial, had offered to let her off with in their original "pay or we sue" letter. According to Wired, Thomas-Rasset (then simply Thomas) was ordered in her first trial to pay $222,000 (or $9,250 per song) by that trial's jury, but then a mistrial had been declared.

Update: "Vista Capable" trial

The ongoing "Vista Capable" class-action lawsuit against Microsoft took an interesting turn the other day when an expert witness for the plaintiffs claimed that the Redmond company made more than $1.5 billion through their "Vista Capable" marketing campaign. The origins of the trial itself are to be found in the months prior to Vista's release when many computers were sold with Windows XP and the promise that they would be capable of running Vista. However, many of these PCs, which sold at a premium and bore the "Vista Capable" label, turned out to be only capable of running Vista Basic. Hence, Microsoft is being sued for what many would call false advertising.

Official Way to Use Vista without Activation 120 Days

Official Way to Install and Use Windows Vista without Activation for Free for 120 Days

By default, Windows Vista can be installed, used and run without any license, product key or the need of activation for 30 days grace period, for purpose of trial or evaluation. Although Microsoft initially stressed that users should purchase a license with valid product key before the trial period expires, or else Windows Vista will lock into Reduced Functionality Mode. However, a "rearm" method has long since been discovered to be able to extend, or reset the remaining time for activation to another fresh 30 days, for up to 3 times.

Now Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Vista can be used and run for 120 days or 4 months ( 3 rearms ), and extending the activation grace period is not a violation of the Vista End User License Agreement (EULA). All versions of Vista include Windows Vista Ultimate allow a 30-day free period without activation, except the corporate-oriented Vista Enterprise, which supports only a three-day trial.

YouTube to trial pre-video ads

YouTube is to run a trial of "pre-roll" video ads on selected content from several broadcasters starting from today. The pre-roll ads are short video ads shown before the video you requested and could be up to 30 seconds long. Advertisements will start appearing around videos from BBC Worldwide, ITN, Discovery, National Geographic and - from today - Channel 4. The idea for this form of advertising was first discussed over 2 years ago, back in 2007, so it has taken a while for the plans to come to fruition. These ads will be sold on a CPM (cost per mille) basis where the advertiser pays a certain price for every one thousand views of an ad.

The Pirate Bay trial, evidence on shaky ground

With the trial winding down to the wire, possibly at the end of this week, more evidence against The Pirate Bay comes into play, but is on shaky ground of being anything from evidence against them. A lawyer from IFPI, Magnus Mårtensson took the stand with evidence including screen shots with progressive downloading from The Pirate Bay. The screen shots were of the IFPI downloading a variety of material to help build up their case. The IFPI downloaded several games and movies using the popular uTorrent. The IFPI's lawyer's technical ability was called into question and found it difficult to answer some technical questions.
