15.2.2008WinVerifyTrust update will be mandatory for WSUS
Cecilia Cole: A couple of weeks ago, I
posted about Windows Vista Service Pack 1s availability to WSUS. In that post, we mentioned that you should install the
WinVerifyTrust update (
KB 938759) if you are running your WSUS server on a
Windows 2003 server to prevent Windows Vista SP1 from being continually re-downloaded to the server once the service pack is released to WSUS.
Today, wed like to let you know that, in order to make sure all customers are well protected, we will be marking this particular
update as mandatory, which means it will appear in the Updates/WSUS Updates node of the Admin console, and will be auto-approved by default (since the
Advanced/WSUS Updates checkbox is checked by default in Options/Automatic Approvals).

20.06.2008Windows Vista Ultimate and WSUS
Just a quick one this time
<"We've heard that one
before" I hear you cry!>
about Windows Vista Ultimate
and WSUS. What is WSUS I hear
you ask? Well, it stands for
Windows
Server Update Services and
essentially, allows
administrators to deploy
updates across a network, so
instead of all the users on
your network navigating to
Windows Update and downloading
the updates separately, just
download them once, and
distribute using WSUS.
The reason for the
post is that WSUS currently
does not allow Windows Vista
Ultimate Extras to be
distributed via WSUS. Not
good. A view which is backed
up by Erik Neuenschwander, who
works in the Ultimate Extras
team here at Microsoft
"That's not a good situation
for customers, so we plan to
improve it. The Ultimate team
is working with Windows Update
to revise the Extras to be
offered to WSUS"
Erik goes on to say "We cut
support for WSUS at launch to
reduce the test burden, and
because we didn't think many
WSUS environments would deploy
Ultimate. We're hearing that
we were wrong, so all the Wave
Zero Extras will be offered to
WSUS later this year."

- All upgrades will require user interaction.
-
This service pack package will supersede WSUS 3.0 RTM packages.
- Block upgrades of all WSUS installation using remote SQL. This is now
a manual upgrade process.
- Do not support upgrading previous versions of WSUS running on Windows 2008.
- System Center
Essentials 1.0 RTM will not be upgraded to WSUS 3.0 SP1. This will be handled by a future release of System Center Essentials.
Note:
WSUS 2.0 SP1 and WSUS 2.0 Client SelfUpdate Update for WSUS 2.0 SP1 packages will be expired. These updates are still available on the Download

28.06.2006WSUS users get a surprise: Windows 7 client
Some Windows Software Update Services (WSUS) users got a surprise on their patching servers on August 20: A mention of Windows 7 Client.
The actual Windows 7 client code was not distributed via WSUS. But the appearance of Windows 7 on the list of products that will be serviced
over WSUS paves the way for Microsoft to start pushing something Windows-7-related to customers in the coming months.
“WSUS
doesn’t push products - just patches. so this could just be in preparation for something that is weeks or months in the future. It’s just
a new category.” said one WSUS customer, who confirmed that he saw the “Windows 7″ box on his update check list this morning.

27.08.2008Unexpected UI errors in WSUS
Bobbie Harder: We have been hearing reports from some customers who use WSUS that they have been having trouble accessing their administration
consoles. We have confirmed the cause of this issue and fixed it on our servers, which will automatically fix the issue for most customers on their
next synchronization cycle. This post will explain the issue in detail and provide steps customers can take to get WSUS working again even sooner.
The cause of this issue is that, on Sunday evening, Microsoft renamed a product category entry for Forefront to clarify the scope of
updates that will be included in the future. Unfortunately the category name that was used included the word Nitrogen in double quotes (appearing as
Nitrogen). A double quote is a restricted character within WSUS, which created an error condition on the administration console. This issue
occurred on many WSUS servers that synchronized with Microsoft servers between 5pm Sunday and 11am Monday Pacific Time.

13.11.2007Microsoft's fix for Automatic Updates lockup not working
Even after users deployed a
fix suggested by Microsoft
Corporation, Windows systems
are still locking up. Symptoms
of the long-running problem,
which the Windows Server
Update Services team dubbed
the "svchost/msi issue",
include 100% CPU usage by
svchost.exe and its multiple
processes when Automatic
Updates is in use or simply
enabled on a machine. A hotfix
for Windows XP and Windows
Server 2003 systems is
available on the Microsoft
support site and will be
pushed out via Microsoft's
usual update services,
including Windows Update and
Microsoft Update, late this
month or in early June.
Users will also need
to download and install the
new stand-alone WSUS 3.0
client, even those who don't
rely on the enterprise-centric
WSUS for updates, to
completely patch the problem.
" It's important to keep
in mind that the new WSUS
client is only a partial
solution and clients must have
both KB927891 and the new 3.0
client installed for a full
solution ," according to
the WSUS team blog. The new
client and the WSUS update to
Version 3.0 will be available
on May 22 but is also already
available on MSDN. Angered
users poured out their
frustration on the WSUS blog
after installing the hotfix
and updating the WSUS client;
the issue was still present.
The only temporary fix is to
disable AU - obviously not the
best solution.

13.05.2007WSUS sync snafu cripples enterprise update ability on eve of Patch Tuesday
A glitch in the software that most midsize and large businesses use to update their Microsoft applications and operating systems has some
administrators scrambling a day before Patch Tuesday.
If the problem in Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) is not fixed before
tomorrow, administrators will not be able to download and deploy the vulnerability patches and other nonsecurity updates Microsoft Corp. has planned
for tomorrow, said
Andrew
Storms, director of security operations at security tools vendor nCircle Inc. "It appears that anybody who synced WSUS
today or yesterday is essentially DOA," he said. The default WSUS setting is to sync daily.
WSUS users began
reporting the error this morning when they first accessed the WSUS console. According to those reports, the error read, "The WSUS administration
console has encountered an unexpected error."
"WSUS was working without any problems before the weekend, nothing has changed on
the server," said a user identified as Drobb on a forum
hosted by a third-party site dedicated to the update management software.

Microsoft: Malware can disable UAC in Windows 7 "by design"
A month has barely passed since the public beta debut of Windows 7 and we have our first horror story. UAC (user account control) was the major gripe
with Windows Vista which annoyed most tech savvy users and confused ordinary consumers. Microsoft has changed the behavior in Windows 7, lowering the
requirement for user interaction when changing system settings. The apparent downside to this is, according to reports, the way Microsoft has changed
the behavior makes it extremely easy for malware authors to write code to disable UAC without user intervention.

Twelve unnecessary Vista features to disable
Vista, thy name is bloat! The latest Windows packs a lot of code -- more than any version of Windows ever -- and some of it is just plain unnecessary.
All of that excess code has a way of slowing down an operating system. You can regain some PC performance by removing unneeded features.
InfoWorld have identified a dozen Vista features that you can turn off right now. Some are shiny baubles that slow down graphics performance, while
others are optional utilities that hog memory when they shouldn't. A few can actually be quite useful, though they play a major role in bogging
down your PC.

Lenovo lets you disable your laptop with a text message
In the next couple months Lenovo will be rolling out a BIOS update for its Montevina laptop users which enables remote shutdown and subsequent
encryption via text message. The tech relies on the laptop having a WWAN connection and activates when a custom string, defined by the user and sent
from a single, paired phone, is received. In other words, you can choose whatever you want as the shutdown signal, from a cool "Kill" or
"Self-Destruct" to a long, patronizing multi-part message about the thieving youth of today. Constant Secure Remote Disable, as it's called,
isn't being touted as a first line of defense.

Microsoft fixes month-old WSUS patch snafu
Microsoft Corp. yesterday issued a fix for a flaw that had blocked users from grabbing security patches through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)

The hotfix, which Microsoft outlined in a support document published Wednesday, addresses a snafu first reported by the company's WSUS
program manager, Cecilia Cole, three weeks ago.
At the time, Cole said that PCs with Office 2003, or components of that version of
the application suite, were unable to retrieve updates from their designated WSUS servers because of an unspecified bug.
